  • It is necessary to improve the performance of buildings with respect to the energy efficiency while improving the quality of occupants' lives through a sustainable built environment. During the design and development process, building projects must have a comprehensive, integrated perspective that seeks to reduce heating, cooling and lighting loads through climate-responsive designs. The aim of this study is to find an optimal thermal transmittance (U-values) for building envelope elements for low energy multi-rise residential buildings in the early design phase in Korea. The study found that using small U-values of $0.15w/m^2K$ for exterior walls, ceilings and floors and $1.0w/m^2K$ for south and north facing windows has resulted in energy reduction of 22.1%-59.4% in the south facing rooms and 43%-77.6% of the north facing rooms. It has also found the energy load reduction potential of using small U-values are higher on the north facing rooms. The findings of this study can be suggested to be used as a baseline case for low energy consumption studies. It can also be used to determine appropriate envelope materials and insulation values.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents and assessment items in the certification criteria for Child Care Support Apartment program in Japan that is implemented mainly by local authorities with a view to provide information that could be used as reference in enhancement of the residential environment. For this purpose, the architectural planning elements for individual residence units and the public spaces of the Child Care Support Apartment Certification programs in effect in Yokohama city were identified and analyzed. In spite of the recent trends in Korea, in which the residential services are more diversified and segmented in consideration of the needs of the residents and the increased interest in child care in general, the literatures that addressed the direct relationship between childbirth and residences are scarce, and it is anticipated that the result of this study would be of contribution to provide a hint in direction for improvement of residential environment with child support programs.

  • This study is purposed to analyze of House Vision exhibition and projects in Japan. The contemporary residence has been planned and designed with fixed territory and boundary of rooms. According to the symposium of House Vision, the spatial boundary can be studied in the aspect of territory that molds the experience of residents. So, this study reviews Aldo van Eyck's concept of 'in-between'. Through the analysis, House Vision exhibition is revealed that the housing models present architectural characteristics of middleware and third place. The cognition of internal and external boundary stems from movements and activities of residents. That is the dwelling and residential space determined by users and residents. In this regard, 'in-between' of House Vision has structures(multilayer) causing various relationships to be perceived, so as to connect with the dwelling and activities of residents. As a result, it has relational meanings of sharing, as well as makes possible other community life to be done. According to the projects of House Vision, the units and cores have created the new connections and relationships between privacy and publicity. In conclusion, this research shows a new direction of the spatial strategies on House Vision exhibition in Japan.

  • Gwangbok is the best example of the dramatic changes after the 1970s in residential and urban planning as political power shifted from Kim Il-sung to his son. Kim Jong-il. Therefore, despite the limited available data on North Korea, we first attempted to accurately describe the design process used to develop Gwangbok. This study investigated the following aspects of North Korean urban planning by examining Gwangbok. First, we clarified Kim Jong-il's aesthetics, which had a key role in the Gwangbok design. We particularly analysed the ideas expressed in his literary writings. Second, we identified the major ideas of the North Korean architects and urban planners who implemented Kim Jong-il's interventions. Last, we reviewed the Soviet Union's influence on the discourse about North Korean residential and urban planning during the post-Khrushchev era. This analysis improves our understanding of the trends during the 1970s and 1980s in socialist residential construction, which was a relatively flexible and open prefabrication approach.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of flush-out on the reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) concentration in newly built residential buildings. The field measurements were conducted in two complexes of multi-residential buildings which are located suburban areas of Seoul. About three samples of residential buildings were selected in the field measurements. Two samples, B and C, had been flush-out with outdoor air more than seven days. The sample A was maintained at same condition during the flush-out because of the comparison. The indoor concentrations of VOCs in the three samples were measured at three times, before, during, and after flush-out. From the field measurements, it was confirmed that two samples' indoor VOCs' concentrations were considerably decreased after the flush-out comapred with those of the sample A in which the flush-out was not conducted. The decreases of indoor VOCs concentrations were corresponding to about 50% ~ 92% of the concentrations of before. Through the reviews for the previous studies, it was also found that the reduction effects of the flush-out is similar with the those of the bake-out which were reported in the previous studies.

  • Recently, the housing problem has been recognized as a matter of housing supply with a certain environmental level and not simply a matter of handing as a quantitative problem, and the demand for pleasant residential environments and requirements for residential environments are increasing more and more. However, it is necessary to establish the directions for improvement of the residential environment according to the house type, as the requirements and levels of satisfaction differ. This study aimed to deduce the level of resident satisfaction with the residential environments according to house type, and determine the direction for improvement of the residential environment. To achieve this, the difference between the house types was analyzed through ANOVA analysis and T-Test, and the major factors on the improvement direction of the residential environment were derived through Action-grid analysis.

  • Low-rise residential community is the most popular type (51%) of residential neighborhoods in Seoul. Currently, there is a shortage of public facilities needed for living conditions and the quality of life in low-rise residential areas. This study defines 'public facility' as infrastructure to improve the living environment and used by residents jointly in low-rise residential areas. In this regard, this study analyzes current legal and institutional standards, latest trends in public facility of apartments, and residents' demand and satisfaction level in order to find out the criteria for installation of priority public facilities. As a result, the essential facility basically conforms to the number of household which is the standard of the facility supply in apartment. However, considering the limitations on the accessibility due to low density, it should consider two standards at the same time: the number of household and distance (radius of neighborhood). In conclusion, it is necessary to install legally prescribed facilities according to the number of household and distance: 500 households facilities in 250m radius neighborhood and 1,000 households facilities in 400m radius neighborhood. Also, considering the reality of low-rise residential area, it is necessary to integrate some facilities that can be functionally linked to improve level of utility and efficiency of operation and management. It is expected that the output of this study can be applied to institutionalize of the legal basis for the public facility of low-rise residential community.

Homeshare unlike ordinary dwelling centered on blood relatives, is characteristic to involve the management that connects between the elderly and young. Second, both the elderly and young were analyzed to be positive about the residential common life. It was shown that the elderly are most positive about human being, whereas young are positive about management and residential environment. The elderly is positive to mutual exchange with the young and young's independent life but the young is positive to factors that support comfortable personal life. Third, negative expression was shown a generation gap between the elderly and the young. The elderly recognized to be negative that young people has lived freely without consideration for the elderly. In order to solve these factors, it is necessary to make improvements through arranging rules for living. Fourth, three themes, human being, residential environment and life, analyzed to be the most important factors to sustain residential common life of Homeshare. The link between management and 3 themes leads to an expansion of positive emotion, which is structurally stable and is expected to increase the sustainability of the residential common life on Homeshare.
