  • The main function of an agricultural reservoir is to supply irrigation water to paddy rice fields in South Korea. Therefore, the operation of a reservoir is significantly affected by the phenology of paddy rice. For example, the early stage of irrigation season, a lot of irrigation water is required for transplanting rice. Therefore, water storage in the reservoir before irrigation season can be a key factor for sustainable irrigation, and it becomes more important under climate change situation. In this study, we analyzed the climate change impacts on reservoir storage rate at the beginning of irrigation period and simulated the reservoir storage, runoff, and irrigation water requirement under RCP scenarios. Frequency analysis was conducted with simulation results to analyze water supply probabilities of reservoirs. Water supply probability was lower in RCP 8.5 scenario than in RCP 4.5 scenario because of low precipitation in the non-irrigation period. Study reservoirs are classified into 5 groups by water supply probability. Reservoirs in group 5 showed more than 85 percentage probabilities to be filled up from half-filled condition during the non-irrigation period, whereas group 1 showed less than 5 percentages. In conclusion, reservoir capacity to catchment area ratio mainly affected water supply probability. If the ratio was high, reservoirs tended to have a low possibility to supply enough irrigation water amount.

  • Due to summer rainfall is concentrated in the construction of the reservoir and the dam was inevitable. The character of these structures are different from the common rivers have been characterized. According to this problem, we need to adopt to this area with three dimensional model. Construction of dams for preservation of land, utilization of water resources, and exploitation of energy potential, which is a basic element of countries' development, is regarded as indispensable for peoples. In addtion, the development of the Nakdong River nutrient and pathogen Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) required that the full range of pollutants, sources, and flow conditions, typical of heavily urbanized areas, be addressed for a single water body with 1-D simulation model (river) and 3-D simulation model (reservoir). The objective of this study is to simulate the applicability of reservoir with the coupling of 3-D hydrodynamic and water quality models to estimate water balance and pollutant loading in Namgang Dam(Jinyang reservoir).

  • The water level of the dam reservoir is an important data in the operation of the dam. reservoir storage can be calculated by using water levels or prepared for disasters such as drought and floods. However, the water level is measured near the dam, making it difficult to represent a reservoir with a large area, and there is a high possibility that the water surface will be distorted due to discharge. Furthermore, the results of the survey showed that the water level of the reservoir is irregular rather than constant, and the water level of the reservoir is repeatedly falling and rising by section. In order to calculate such a complex and irregular representative water level, the water level observation density of the reservoir must be increased. In this study, we tried to derive the optimum water level observation density for Hwacheon Dam. A reasonable water level measurement density was derived by investigating the water level elevation of the reservoir and statistically analyzing it. The observation density may vary depending on the size of the reservoir, so the same analysis was conducted on the Goesan Dam and Boseonggang Dam. According to the results, four Hwacheon dams, three Goesan dams, and seven Boseong River dams are needed for observation density.

  • This study proposes a method to evaluate agricultural reservoirs drought by modifying SWSI (Surface Water Supply Index). The method was applied to Geum river basin and the results were represented as spatially distributed information. The SWSI evaluates hydrological drought of watershed unit by selectively applying one or all of the components of snowpack, precipitation, streamflow and reservoir storage. South Korea has 22 % of agricultural area, and rice paddy covers 64 % among them. Usually paddy fields scattered along stream are irrigated by so many small agricultural reservoirs. It is difficult to evaluate agriculture drought by the little information and large number of agricultural reservoirs. In this study, seven agricultural reservoirs over 10 million ton storage capacity were selected in Geum river basin, and the SWSI was evaluated for both upstream and downstream of the reservoirs using 16 years data (1991-2006). Using the results, multiple regression analyses with precipitation and reservoir storage as variables were conducted and the equations were applied to other watersheds. The spatial results by applying regression equations showed that the severe and moderate drought conditions of July and September in 1994, June in 1995, and May in 2001 were well expressed by the watershed unit.

  • In this study, we investigated vertical distribution and seasonal changes of phytophlankton community in the Hae-Dong Reservoir from March 1999 to Feburary 2000. This reservoir is relativly small (surface area, 2.7 $km^2$) and is the source of drinking water supply to the eastern part of Pusan City. Samples were collected at 2 sites (1, 3, and 6 m; site 1, in front of the dam; site 2, inlet). The dominant group was Bacillriophyceae at both sites (over 63%), and other groups exhibited seasonal changes (high cyanobacterial density in summer; green algal communities in winter). Chrysophyceae and Dinophyceae were maintained lower level during the study period. Along the water depth, all classess of phytoplankton did not show distintive vertical distribution at both sites except during the blue-green algal bloom in the middle of July and late September. The phytoplankton community dynamics in the Hoe-Dong Reservoir was strongly affected by the hydrological factors such as concentrated precipitation and short retention time.

  • As a fundamental research to establish a safety operation plan for irrigation dams, this study presents hydrologic analysis conducted in Sungju Dam watershed based on various rainfall data. Especially those reservoirs without flood control feature are widely exposed to the risk of flooding, a safe and optimized operation program need to be improved against arbitrary flooding. In this study, reservoir routing program was developed and simulated for reservoir runoff estimation using WMS hydrology model. The model simulated the variations of reservoir elevation under the condition of open or closed emergency gate. In case of closed emergency gate, water surface elevation was given as 193.15 m, and this value exceeds the dam crest height by 1.65 m. When the emergency gate is open, the increment of water surface elevation is given as 192.01 m, and this value exceeds dam crest height by 0.57 m. As an alternative plan, dam height increase can be considered for flood control under the PMP (Probable Maximum Precipitation) condition. Since the dam size is relatively small compare to the watershed area, sound protection can be expected from the latter option rather than emergency gate installation.

  • HSPF model based on BASINS was applied to analyze effects of watershed management measures for water quality conservation in the Hwaseong Reservoir watershed. The model was calibrated against the field measurements of meteorological data, streamflow and water qualities ($BOD_5$, T-N, T-P) at each observatory for 4 years (2007-2010). The water quality characteristics of inflow streams were evaluated. The 4 scenarios for the water quality improvement were applied to inflow streams and critical area from water pollution based on previous researches. The reduction efficiency of point and non-point sources in inflow streams was evaluated with each scenario. The results demonstrate that the expansion of advanced treatment system within wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and construction of pond-wetlands would be great effective management measures. In order to satisfactory the target water quality of reservoir, the measures which can control both point source and non-point source pollutants should be implemented in the watershed.

  • In order to estimate release water from reservoirs located on ungaged watersheds, an algorithm was suggested based on hydrologic reservoir routing and real time calibrating watershed parameters. A prototype - simple computer program was developed to implement the algorithm with Genetic Algorithm technic. The program was applied to a mid-size reservoir and its ungauged watershed area using observed rainfall data, spillway gates operation data and reservoir water stage time series data under a existing storm event. The result shows that the algorithm and the prototype would be useful to simulate released water from reservoirs.

  • Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted for spatio-temporal distribution and size estimation of fish in the Yongdam reservoir, Korea, from April to July 2014. Acoustic data were collected along acoustic transects using a 120 kHz scientific echosounder. The received acoustic data were the in situ acoustic target strength (dB) and nautical area scattering coefficient ($m^2/mile^2$). Data on fish behavioral patterns and size were collected using a DIDSON acoustic camera at stationary stations. Fish were mainly distributed in the center channel and close to the outer Yongdam reservoir. Acoustic density of fish in the summer season were higher than in the spring season. The seasonal vertical distribution pattern of fish aggregations may be strongly related to the vertical temperature structure. The size distribution of fish obtained from an acoustic camera correlated well with the acoustic size of fish from an echosounder.

  • The time variations in relative humidity observed at the Gangjeong (Goryeong) Reservoir in the Nakdong River over a one-year period (September 2012-August 2013) were analyzed with the Bowen ratio. The thermal vertical scale of the reservoir was also evaluated following Yamamoto's method. The study's results showed that the relative humidity at the reservoir was higher than that of the Daegu Meteorological Observatory (inland) all year round. The difference was slightly larger at nighttime (17-20 %) than at daytime (13-15 %) in all seasons except summer. The quantitative order of latent heat flux was summer, spring, autumn, and winter. This finding signifies that the thermal vertical scale of the reservoir corresponds to that of a shallow lake. The Bowen ratio was smallest at midday of the summer season. In other words, the net radiation energy was converted more as latent heat flux than sensible heat flux during a higher temperature period.
