This study was conducted to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina platensis, for the removal of Pb and Cu ions in wastewater. Both of free algal cell and immobilized algae by Ca-alginate were used as bioadsorbent, and experiment was proceed in batch reactor for Pb and Cu ions removal, respectively. In the biosorption of Pb and Cu ions by free Spirulina platensis cell, the adsorption equilibrium reached within 20 minute. The higher adsorbed amount of Pb and Cu was shown as increasing of initial concentration of Pb and Cu, and pH of solution, respectively, and the optimum pH was 4.5$\sim$5.0. Under the conditions of initial concentration of Pb or Cu are 200 mg/L, the maximum amounts of Pb and Cu adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina platensis were 86.43 and 57.02 mg/g, respectively, and these values were 1.94 and 1.48 times higher than those of activated carbon under same conditions, respectively. The biosorption kinetics of Pb and Cu ions by free Spirulina platensis cell fitted very well to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum amount of Pb or Cu adsorbed to the unit mass of adsorbent by the Langmuir isotherm($q_{max}$) represented as 95.24 and 62.50 mg/g, respectively. The FT-IR results of free Spirulina platensis biomass showed that biomass has different functional groups and these functional groups are able to react with metal ions in aqueous solution. In the biosorption of Pb and Cu ions by Ca-alginate immobilized algae Spirulina platensis, the adsorption equilibrium reached within 40 min. and observed a little diffusion limitation differed from the free algal cell adsorption.
A passive containment cooling system has been designed to remove the heat inside a containment during accidents without external power supply. In this work, the PCCS was introduced in the APR1400 plant to replace the containment spray system and, then, the thermal-hydraulic performance of the PCCS was analyzed using the system thermal-hydraulic computer code, MARS. A double-ended cold-leg break accident, which is known to induce the maximum pressure in the containment, is simulated, where the thermal hydraulics of the PCCS, the reactor coolant system, and the containment are simultaneously simulated. The results of the calculations showed that the PCCS can replace the existing spray system and that the containment building and its internal structure also play a very important role for the heat removal during the accident. Some sensitivity calculations were carried out to evaluate the model uncertainty and the effects of design parameters. The limitations of the PCCS are also discussed.

Numerical simulation was carried out to study the trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by permeable reactive barrier (PRB), and revealed the effect of concentration of TCE, iron medium mass, and concentration of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). Newly developed model was based on axial dispersion reactor model with chemical and biological reaction terms and was implemented using MATLAB ver R2006A for the numerical solutions of dispersion, convection, and reactions over column length and elapsed time. The reaction terms include reactions of TCE degradation by zero-valent iron (ZVI, Fe$^0$) and ferrous iron (Fe$^{2+}$). TCE concentration in the column inlet was maintained as 10 mg/L. Equation for Fe$^0$ degradation includes only TCE reaction term, while one for Fe$^{2+}$ has chemical and biological reaction terms with TCE and IRB, respectively. Two coupled equations eventually modeled the change of TCE concentration in a column. At Fe$^0$ column, TCE degradation rate was found to be more than 99% from 60 hours to 235 hours, and declined to less than 1% in 1,365 hours. At the Fe$^{2+}$ and IRB mixed column, TCE degradation rate was equilibrated at 85.3% after 210 hours and kept it constant. These results imply that the ferrous iron produced by IRB has lowered the TCE degradation efficiency than ZVI but it can have higher longevity.http://kci.go.kr/kciportal/ci/contents/ciConnReprerSearchPopup.kci#

Fission products of DUPIC (Direct Use of Spent PWR Fuel in CANDU Reactors) fuel, irradiated in HANARO research reactor with 61 ㎾/m of maximum linear power and 1,770 ㎿d/tU of average burn-up, was characterized by EPMA(Electron Probe Micro Analyzer). In order to find accurate characterization, the analysis results by EPMA of fresh simulated DUPIC fuel containing fission products as chemicals were compared with that of wet chemical analysis. The metallic precipitates observed at the center of the fresh simulated DUPIC fuel were about 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in size and their major components by EPMA were Mo-53.89 at.%, Ru-37.40 at.%, and Pd+Rh-8.71 at.%. Established procedure through the fresh simulated DUPIC fuel was applied to the irradiated DUPIC fuel. Observed size of metallic precipitates were 2∼2.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and their compositions were Mo-47.34 at.%, Ru-46 at.%, and Pd+Rh-6.65 at.%. What are uncommon things for this experiment, special treatment for improving the conductivity was attempted to the specimen and the conditions of exact irradiation of electron beam to small metallic precipitate were suggested.

This research carried out a 3-dimensional simulation using computerized fluid dynamics (CFD) for the flow characteristics, temperature distribution, velocity distribution and residence time, etc. in a reactor in order to derive the optimal combustion conditions of an innovative combustion system. The area-weighted average temperature of the outlet of a furnace during combustion at a condition of fuel input rate 1.5 ton/hr, residence time 1.25 sec and air/fuel ratio 2.1 was $1,077^{\circ}C$, which is a suitable temperature for energy recovery and treatment of air pollutants. Exhaust gas is discharged through a duct at a 40~50 m/s maximum speed along strong vortexes at the center of a combustion chamber, so strong turbulence is created at the center of a combustion chamber to enhance the combustion speed and combustion efficiency. In this system, the optimum operation conditions to prevent incomplete combustion and suppress the formation of thermal NOx were air/fuel ratio 1.9~2.1 and fuel input rate 1.25~1.5 ton/hr.

Look into the nuclear power plant of Wolsong currently, it is controlled in order to required operating pressure with PI controller. PI controller has a simple structure and satisfy design requirements to gain setting. However, It is difficult to control without changing the gain from produce changes in parameters such as loss of the valves and the pipes. To solve these problems, the dynamic change of the PI controller gain, or to compensate for the PI controller output is desirable to configure the controller. The aim of this research and development in the parameter variations can be controlled to a stable controller design which is reduced an error and a vibration. Proposed PI/NN control techniques is the PI controller and the neural network controller that combines a parallel and the neural network controller part is compensated output of the controller for changes in the parameters were designed to be robust. To directly evaluate the controller performance can be difficult to test in real processes to reflect the characteristics of the process. Therefore, we develope the simulator model using the real process data and simulation results when compared with the simulated process characteristics that showed changes in the parameters. As a result the PI/NN controller error and was confirmed to reduce vibrations.

Experiments for autotrophic denitrification were performed using an upf10w reac1.or packed with sulfur particles as an electron donor. The influent $NO_3{^-}$-N concentration was kept almost constant, but the hydraulic retention time(HRT) and temperature varied. Results of the research showed that the denitrification efficiency and gas generation rate decreased as the HRT and temperature were reduced. During the HRT effect experiment, alkalinities of 3.44~5.71g, with an average of 4.67 g which is close to the theoretical value of 4.57g were consumed for each gram of $NO_3{^-}$-N removed. During the temperature effect experiment, however, the values were 6.58~13.41 g with an average of 9.12 g which is almost twice the theoretical value Denitrification along the length of the reactor appeared to be a first-order reaction with a reaction rate constant of 0.1648/hr. On the other hand, the sulfate generation showed a zero-order reaction with a reaction rate constant of 241/hr. There was some discrepancy in the nitrogen mass balance between the theoretical and measured values, requiring further researches.

In this study, Bio-hydrogen is produced from organic waste mixtures containing food waste and waste activated sludge (WAS). The effects of different operational factor on hydrogen production, including various solubilization methods for pretreatments of WAS, pH and different ratios of food waste and WAS, were investigated. The highest hydrogen production values are obtained as 4.3 mL $H_2/g$$VS_{consumed}$ in the case of applying the mixed pre-treatments of alkali and ultrasonic. The pH value in bio-reactor increased from 4 to 8 after the ultrasonic treatment with alkali and the hydrogen yield touched its highest value in the pH range of 5.0 to 5.5. Similarly, the hydrogen production reached the level of 13.8 mL $H_2/g$$VS_{consumed}$ using the same pre-treatment method from the mixture of food waste and WAS. The ratio of 2 : 1 produced a maximum amount of hydrogen of 5.0 L $H_2/L/d$. The amount of volatile fatty acids(VFAs) including acetate, propionate and butyrate, were also varied considerably. Propionate decreased consistently with rising of hydrogen while butyrate comparing to acetate relatively increased in the effluent.
In recent, the demand of development of the high dose rate brachytherapy source increased for substitute for Co-60 source by iridium source, since the supplying Co-60 source is very depressed and the high dose rate brachytherapy sources are entirely imported from the abroad. This study investigated the exposure rates and isotropic dose distributions for the Ir-192 source produced from $\^$191/Ir(n,r)$\^$192/Ir by nuclear reactor in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The activity of source was obtained an 1.012 Ci (the initial activity without encapsulation was 2,87Ci) by measurement with encapsuled stainless steel. The exposure rate of provided Ir-192 source was determined on 6.36 ${\pm}$ 0.147 Rm$^2$/h-GBq (2.350 ${\pm}$ 0.054 Rcm$^2$/mCi-hr) within ${\pm}$ 2.2% discrepancy with IC-10 ion chamber (0.14 cc) which was mounted on the acrylic jig to 5, 10 and 20 cm from the center of source. The calculated doses with 22 most significant spectrum lines were corrected with intrinsic efficiency of the germanium detector were compared to measured exposure dose rates within ${\pm}$3.8 % discrepancy. The authors confirmed the high dose rate Ir-192 source could be replaced the long decayed Co-60 source via investigation of the isotropic dose distributions in lateral, source axis and diagonal direction of source center are very closed to within 3% uncertainties. Especially, this exposure rate constant and isotropic dose distribution will be fundamental to build the high dose rate source and develop the computed therapy planning system.
Massive environmental monitoring has been conducted continuously since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power accident in March of 2011 by different monitoring methods that have different features together with migration studies of radiocesium in diverse environments. These results have clarified the characteristics of radiological environments and their temporal change around the Fukushima site. At three months after the accident, multiple radionuclides including radiostrontium and plutonium were detected in many locations; and it was confirmed that radiocesium was most important from the viewpoint of long-term exposure. Radiation levels around the Fukushima site have decreased greatly over time. The decreasing trend was found to change variously according to local conditions. The air dose rates in environments related to human living have decreased faster than expected from radioactive decay by a factor of 2-3 on average; those in pure forest have decreased more closely to physical decay. The main causes of air dose rate reduction were judged to be radioactive decay, movement of radiocesium in vertical and horizontal directions, and decontamination. Land-use categories and human activities have significantly affected the reduction tendency. Difference in the air dose rate reduction trends can be explained qualitatively according to the knowledge obtained in radiocesium migration studies; whereas, the quantitative explanation for individual sites is an important future challenge. The ecological half-lives of air dose rates have been evaluated by several researchers, and a short-term half-life within 1 year was commonly observed in the studies. An empirical model for predicting air dose rate distribution was developed based on statistical analysis of an extensive car-borne survey dataset, which enabled the prediction with confidence intervals. Different types of contamination maps were integrated to better quantify the spatial data. The obtained data were used for extended studies such as for identifying the main reactor that caused the contamination of arbitrary regions and developing standard procedures for environmental measurement and sampling. Annual external exposure doses for residents who intended to return to their homes were estimated as within a few millisieverts. Different forms of environmental data and knowledge have been provided for wide spectrum of people. Diverse aspects of lessons learned from the Fukushima accident, including practical ones, must be passed on to future generations.
