In this study, scaled model tests were carried out to decide the optimal critical velocity, to prevent back layering in the case of fire in a long traffic tunnel. Realistic estimates were made for the time required for people to escape ken the tunnel and far the time required by the ventilation operator to increase the system speed to full capacity. The analysis, predicts that the emergency ventilation will start about 240 seconds after the tunnel fire. It was also found that prevention of back layering would occur within 4 minutes after fan operation. To find out optimal critical velocity, a 1/50 scaled model tunnel(diameter : 0.2 m and length : 20 m) based on the Froude similarity technique was constructed. Changing $\beta$ values in the Tetzner's equation, smoke propagation was observed. From the experiment, it was concluded that using a $\beta$ value of 0.5 to prevent back layering successfully allowed time for safe evacuation.

The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical fence was investigated using the two-frame PTV system. The Reynolds number based on the fence height(H) was 2950. From this study, it is revealed that at least 400 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 100 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information. Various turbulence statistics such as turbulent intensities, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were calculated from 700 instantaneous velocity vector fields. The fence flow has an unsteady recirculation region behind the fence, followed by a slow relaxation to the flat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about 11.2H. There exists a region of negative Reynolds shear stress near the fence top due to the highly convex (stabilizing) streamline-curvature of the upstream flow. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have significant influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.

In order to improve the speed performance of the direct drive mechanical systems, a comprehensive analysis of the velocity ripples of blushless DC motors should be required. Every motor has a certain level of torque ripples when it generates power, and the generated torque ripple also makes the velocity ripples in the final output stage in speed control system. In this paper, a novel algorithm for reducing velocity ripples is proposed based on the modeling of torque ripples for BLDC motors. Various algorithms have been made for torque ripples, but usually they should be installed inside the amplifier logic, result in the difficulties of flexibility for various kinds of torque ripples. The proposed algorithm was developed for being ported in the controller not the amplifier, and it has the capability of the automatic compensation adjustment. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified by effective simulations and experiments.

This paper presents a study of low frequencies volume velocity vibration control of a smart panel in order to reduce sound transmission. A distributed piezoelectric quadratically shaped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer film is used as a uniform force actuator and an array of $4\;{\times}\;4$ accelerometer is used as a volume velocity sensor for the implementation of a single-input single-output control system. The theoretical and experimental study of sensor-.actuator frequency response function shows that this sensor-actuator arrangement provides a required strictly positive real frequency response function below about 900 Hz. Direct velocity feedback could therefore be implemented with a limited gain which gives reductions of about 15 dB in vibration level and about 8 dB in acoustic power level at the (1,1) mode of the smart panel. It has been also shown that the shaping error of PVDF actuator could limit the stability and performance of the control system.
The estimation of proper prediction method and the transformation method of environmental regulation standard were carried out by measuring blasting vibration. Vibration velocity was more adequate than vibration level in the blasting design by scaled distance. Thus, design and construction mutt be controlled by vibration velocity, and it is required that the vibration velocity is transformed to vibration level to meet regulation standard. Three transformation methods were studied. First, transformation formula is derived from the shock vibration data only. The second method it the transformation by correlation equation of vibration velocity and vibration level measured at the same time. The last one is the transformation of vibration velocity by FFT. It seems to be difficult to estimate damages by these methods because that every method shows considerable error. But transformation formula of PPV component to vibration level was most practical.

This paper presents Inverse SAR imaging algorithm for a unknown velocity target and a real ISAR data is processed and applied to the algorithm. The real ISAR data is obtained by transmitting a number of pulse modulated by a stepped-frequency method and the received data are undersampled. We present a method applicable for the case of a undersampled data base. In this method, the original echoed signal is mixed with a reference signal to make it unaliased, followed by being interpolated. Target`s velocity required for the algorithm is estimated via subaperture processing and after the coordinate transformation into squint-mode SAR with the estimated velocity, a recently proposed SAR/ISAR imaging algorithm derived without any approximation is utilized to produce the output image. We also propose an ISAR image scheme that is usable when a target changes its velocity during ISAR data acquisition time.

^In this paper, diagnostic technique for detecting the engine faults, especially misfire, are introduced and compared with each other under the same conditions. With all of them the instantaneous angular velocitys, measured at the flywheel, were analyzed. The techniques include the frequency analysis, auto-correlation function, velocity index, acceleration index, maximum acceleration index, and integrated torque index. Since the main driving components for the angular velocity fluctuation are both the pressure and the inertia torque, the component of the inertia torque in it must be excluded to extract the information of the combustion from the angular velocity. To do this, it is required to consider only the first half of the combustion period in the angular velocity fluctuations, which has never been proposed in the existing methods. On the basis of this fact, the results show that the most effective diagnostic technique is maximum acceleration index.

The Navstar Global Positioning System(GPS) is an advanced navigation satelite system for determination of position, velocity and time. It can provide three-dimensional positioning on a global basis, independent of weather, 24 hours per day. Test results show that the carrier phase and pseudorange corrections are suitable for a kinematic GPS system. Using these corrections are more effective than using raw GPS data, since fewer bits are required for transmission Additionally, the number of computation required at the rover is reduced when corrections, rather than raw measurement are transmitted

A variety of methods for measuring the velocity from an image sequence use the relationship between the spatial and temporal gradients of image brightness function. In most situations, an additional constraint is required because the velocity is not determined uniquely by a above relationship. Horn and Schunch proposed a constraint that the velocity field should vary smoothly over the image. This requirement, however, forces the velocity field to vary smoothly even across motion boundaries. To complement this probe, Nagel introduced and 'oriented smoothness' constraint which restricts variations of velocity field only in directions with small or no variation of image brightness function. On the other hand, Paquin and Dubois proposed a different type of constraint that the velocity is constant in a small area of image. But, this constraint also creates difficulties at motion boundaries which large variations in velocity field often occur. We propose the method to overcome these difficulties by utilizing the information of discontinuities in image brightness function, and present the experimental results.
Multi-arm cooperation robot system is required for more specific and dextrous jobs such as transferring very large or heavy objects, or grasping work piece while processing on it. There is little research on 3-dimensional multi-arm robot. Here we propose two performance indices presenting isotropy of end-effector's acceleration and velocity capabilities with constraints of joint torques, that is Isotropic Acceleration Radius [IAR] and Isotropic Velocity Radius [IVRI. Also the procedure to find 3-dimensional IAR, IVR is proposed, where available acceleration set concept is used. The case of 3-dimensional two 3 joint robot system was simulated and the distributions of IAR, IVR was studied.
