쏠종개 Plotosus lineatus (Thunberg)의 생식주기 (Reproductive Cycle of the Striped Eel Catfish Plotosus lineatus (Thunberg))

  • We investigated the reproductive cycle of the striped eel catfish Plotosus lineatus. Specimens were sampled in the coastal waters of Sungsan and Jocheon, east of Jeju, Korea, from September 2001 to August 2002. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) in females and males were reached a maximum in June $(14.18{\pm}10.38)$ and July $(0.35{\pm}0.12)$, respectively. Based on histological observations and GSI variation, the reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive stages: in females, growing (September-April), mature (April-June), spawning (June-July), and degenerative and recovery (July-September) and in males, growing (August-December), mature (September-May), spent (April-July), and degenerative and recovery (June-August). The total length at 100% maturity exceeded 15 cm and the fecundity ranged from 525 to 1176 eggs. The fecundity was correlated positively with total length and body weight. Histological observations of the gonads suggest that this species is a spring-summer spawner with group-synchronous type oocyte development.

  • The gonad index, reproductive cycle and first sexual maturity of Sinonovacula constricta collected from Simpo, Kimje-gun, Korea were investigated by histological analysis. The gonad index(GI) in both sexes of S. constricta increased from April and reached a maximum in July when the water temperature rapidly increased. And then, the GI values gradually decreased by spawning from August through October. Monthly variations in the GI showed a close relationship with ovarian development. The reproductive cycle in females and males can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage(March to June), late active stage(May to July), ripe stage(July to September), partially spawned stage(August to October), spent/inactive stage(October to March). The percentage of first sexual maturations in female and male clams of 50.1-60.0 mm in shell length was over 50%, and for clams over 70.1 mm in shell length, it was 100%. Because harvesting clams < 50.1 mm in shell length could potentially cause a drastic reduction in recruitment, a measure including a prohibitory fishing size should be taken for adequate improved fisheries resource management.

  • Gonadal development, gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, and first sexual maturity of Reishia clavigera were investigated monthly from July 1998 to June 1999 through cytological and histological observations. R. clavigera had separate sexes, and was an internal fertilizer. The ma1e penis was located near the two tentacles. The ovary and testis were composed of a great number of oogenic lobules and spermatogenic tubules, respectively. The size of ripe oocyte ranged from 130 to 140 ${\mu}$m in diameter. The peripheral cytoplasm of the germinal vesicle of the ripe oocyte in many cases were surrounded by smaller yolk granules, while the eccentric cytoplasm was occupied with larger ones. The reproductive cycle of R. clavigera could be classified into five successive stages: early active, late active, ripe, spawning, and recovery. Spawning of females occurred from early July to August when the seawater reached above 24.8$^{\circ}C$. Spawning of males occurred from early June to August in the water above 22.8$^{\circ}C$. Minimum size for sexual maturity of both sexes was above 10.0 mm in shell height. Each egg capsule was a cylinder or spindle in shape, 4-6 mm in length and 1-2 mm in width. Colors of newly spawned egg capsules showed yellowish white or pale yellow, while those with veliger larvae showed pale black, and released larvae or dead egg capsules showed black violet. The fecundity in an egg capsule ranged from 70 to 91 eggs (mean=80.28 eggs).

Ultrastructure of Germ Cells during Spermatogenesis and the Reproductive Cycle in Male Meretrix petechialis on the West Coast of Korea

  • Gonad index, spermatogenesis and the reproductive cycle of Meretrix petechialis were investigated by cytological, histological observations. Monthly changes in the gonad index coincides the gonadal development. The morphology of the spermatozoon had a primitive type and is similar to that of other bivalves having a short mid-piece with five to six mitochondria surrounding the centrioles. The morphology of the sperm nucleus type and the acrosome shape of this species were cylindrical type and cap-like shape, respectively. The spermatozoon was approximately 40-45 ${\mu}m$ in length including the sperm nucleus length (about 1.50 ${\mu}m$), acrosome length (0.60 ${\mu}m$) and tail flagellum. The axoneme of the tail flagellum consisted of nine pairs of microtubules at the periphery and a pair at the center. The axoneme of the sperm tail showed 9 + 2 microtubular arrangement. The spawning period was from June to September and the main spawning occurred from July to August when seawater temperatures were higher than $20^{\circ}C$. The reproductive cycle of this species could be categorized into five successive stages: early active stage (February to March), late active stage (February to May), ripe stage (April to July), partially spawned stage (June to September), and spent/inactive stage (September to February).

Oogenesis and Reproductive Cycle in Neptunea (Barbitonia) arthritica cumingii on the West Coast of Korea

  • The gonadosomatic index (GSI), oogenesis and reproductive cycle in female Neptunea (Barbitonia) afhritica cumingii were investigated by light and electron microscope observations. In the early vitellogenic oocyte, the Golgi complex and mitochondria were involved in the formation of glycogen, lipid droplets and yolk granules. Late in the vitellogenic oocytes, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and multivesicular bodies were involved in the formation of proteid yolk granules in cytoplasm. In particular, compared with the results of other gastropods, it showed a different result that appearances of cortical granules at the cortical layer and microvilli on the vitelline envelope, which is associated with heterosynthetic vitellogenesis, were not observed in vitellogenic oocytes during oogenesis. A mature yolk granule was composed of three components: main body (central core), superficial layer, and the limiting membrane. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index in females studied in 2004 and 2005 were closely associated with ovarian developmental phases. Spawning occurred between May and August in 2004 and 2005 and the main spawning occurred between June and July when the seawater temperature rose to approximately $18-23^{\circ}C$. The female reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage (September to October), late active stage (November to February), ripe stage (February to June), partially spawned stage (May to August), and recovery stage (June to August).

어깨뿔고둥 (Ocenebra japonica)의 생식세포형성과 생식주기 (Gametogenesis and Reproductive Cycle of the Murex Shell (Ocenebra japonica) (Neogastropoda: Muricidae))

  • Gonadal development, gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, gonad index, and flesh weight rate of the murex shell (Ocenebra japonica) collected from the rocky intertidal zone of Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were investigated by means of histological method from January to December 2002. O. japonica had separate sexes, and was oviparous. The gonad was widely situated on the surface of the digestive gland located in the rear of the spiral flesh part in the shell. The male penis was located near the two tentacles. The ovary was composed of a number of oogenic follicles, and the testis was composed of several spermatogenic tubules. The size of ripe oocyte was approximately $140{\mu}m$ in diameter. The gonad index (GI) began to increase in March $(33.24{\pm}2.33)$ and reached the maximum in June $(47.77{\pm}1.90)$ Thereafter, the values decreased from July $(45.12{\pm}3.60)$ to October $(19.32{\pm}2.91)$. The flesh weight rate (FWR) began to increase in January $(25.93{\pm}1.32)$ and reached the maxium in May $(31.78{\pm}1.09)$ Thereafter, the values decreased from June $(31.50{\pm}0.66)$ to October $(24.09{\pm}1.60)$. The reproductive cycle could be classified into five successive stages: early active (October to April), late active (January to June), ripe (May to September), spawning (July to September) and recovery (September to February). The reproductive cycle was closely related to the seawater temperature.

  • 포항 형산강 하구에 서식하는 참재첩, Corbicula leana을 대상으로 생식세포 형성과정 및 생식주기를 조직학적으로 조사하였다. 참재첩은 자웅이체로서 난생이며, 생식소는 완숙하면 암컷은 흑갈색, 수컷은 유백색을 띤다. 생식소관은 내장낭의 간중장선 하방으로 부터 근충의 외벽근층내에 있는 섬유성 망상결체조직까지 분포되어 있다. 난소는 수지상으로 연결된 난소소관으로 구성되어 있고, 정소 역시 많은 소관상의 정소소관으로 구성되어 있는데 이들 소관의 내강상피가 생식상피 기능을 하고 있다. 성숙난모세포는 배포의 변화로 알 수 있으며, 그 크기는 $70{\~}80{mu}m$ 정도이다. 난소 및 정소의 초기 발달에는 간충조직과 색소과립세포들이 영양세포로 관여하고 있으며 난소와 정소가 발달하면서 점차적으로 사라진다. 생식소 발달은 수온과 밀접한 연관성이 있고, 비만도의 변화도 주기성이 일치하였다. 생식주기는 분열증식기, 성장기, 성숙기, 방출기, 퇴화기 그리고 회복기 둥의 연속적인 주기로 구분할 수가 있다. 산란기는 6월 하순부터 9월 중순까지이고, 산란성기는 7월과 8월이었으며 생물학적 최소형은 10.0 mm 이상으로 조사되었다.

우럭, Mya arenaria의 생식연주기 (Annual Reproductive Cycle of the Soft Clam, Mya arenaria)

  • 우럭, Mya arenaria은 자웅이체로서 난생이다. 생식소는 소화맹낭과 근육층 사이에 분포하고 있다. 난소와 정소는 작은 소낭들로 구성되어 있고, 성숙하면 비후된다. 이들 소관의 내강상피가 생식상피 기능을 하고 있다. 난소 및 정소의 발달에는 간충조직과 과렵세포들이 영양세포로 관여하고 있으며, 방란 방정을 마친 생식소는 완전 퇴화하고, 짧은 회복기를 거쳐 생식소낭의 형태를 갖추며 새로 분화 재배치된 망 상결체조직에서 생식소가 신생되어 기능을 발휘한다. 비만도는 99년 4월 (0.054)에 최고값을 나타내었으며, 방출기가 종료된 직후 1998년 10월에 최저값 (0.030)을 보였다. 완숙난은 $60{\mu}m$ 전후로 하나의 큰 인을 가진다. 암수의 성비는 0.89:1로 수컷이 약간 높게 나타났다. 생식주기는 초기활성기 (2월$\~$3월), 후기활성기 (4월$\~$8월), 완숙기 (9월),부분방출 및 방출기 (9월$\~$10월) 그리고 비활성기 (11월$\~$1월) 등의 연속적인 주기로 구분할 수가 있다. 주산란기는 $9\~10$월로 추계산란종이다.

생식주기에 따른 자성 생쥐의 생식기관의 Matrix Metalloproteinase의 단백질 발현 (Protein Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinases of Mouse Reproductive Organs During Estrous Cycle)

  • Protein expression patterns of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were examined in mouse reproductive organs during estrous cycle. Estrous cycle was classified into diestrus, proestrus, estrus or metestus and MMP expression was analyzed by zymography using gelatin as a substrate. Uterine fluid (UF) obtained both at diestrus and proestrus exhibited 4 major MMPs including 106kDa, 64kDa, 62kDa and 59kDa gelatinases. However, in UF at estrus, the gelatinolytic activity of 64kDa MMP disappeared and that of 106kDa and 62kDa MMPs dramatically decreased. At metestrus, 64kDa MMP activity reappeared and 106kDa and 62kDa MMP exhibited increased activities such that the band intensity of 106kDa was comparable to that in UF at diestrus. Gelatinolytic activity of 59kDa MMP was not changed throughout the cycle. Both ovarian and oviductal tissue homogenate revealed 4 MMPs which corresponded to the 4 MMPs of UF. However, unlike UF MMPs, gelatinolytic activity of these MMPs did not show distinct changes throughout the cycle. Either an inhibitor of MMP, 1,10-phenanthroline, or a metal chelator, EDTA, abolished the appearance of the above MMP activities in gelatinated gel whereas a serine proteinase inhibitor, phcnylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, failed to inhibit the appearance of MMP activities, proving that gelatinolytic activity of the above reproductive tissues were due to the enzymatic activity of MMP. When gclatinolytic activity of mouse serum was examined, it revealed 5 MMPs (131kDa, 106kDa, 89kDa, 64kDa and 62kDa bands) and one gelatinase (84kDa) band. From these results, it is concluded that the protein expression of MMPs of mouse reproductive organs, particularly uterus, is temporally regulated during estrous cycle and uterine 106kDa, 64kDa and 62kDa MMPs are suggested to play an important role in cyclic tissue remodeling of mouse uterus.

Reproductive Biology of the Temperate Soft Coral Dendronephthya suensoni (Alcyonacea: Nephtheidae)

  • The azooxanthellate soft coral Dendronephthya suensoni (Holem, 1895) is distributed mainly around Jejudo Island, Korea. This species was determined as gonochoric with a sex ratio of 2:1 (female:male). Both female and male colonies have one gametogenic cycle a year. The annual reproductive cycle of D. suensoni is dependent on the seawater temperature. In particular, reproduction of the male colony showed a higher positive correlation between seawater temperature and the mean diameter of the spermaries. Gametogenesis in females and males took 6 months and 12 months, respectively. The mean diameter of a mature oocyte was $249.29\;{\pm}\;36.24\;{\mu}m$, with a maximum size of $354.45\;{\mu}m$. Spawning could have occurred in the fall after the seawater temperature began to decrease.
