This study describes a dynamic model of the hydroforming process which is used for precision forming of sheet metals. To help the controller design for the control of the forming pressure needed for this process as well as to investigate the effect of system parameters on the dynamic behavior, dynamic modeling is performed with emphasis on hydraulic servo system which actuates the forming machine. Since the model contains several unknown parameters, these were estimated via a least square parameter identification method. Based upon the identified model, a series of simulations were performed for various operating conditions. The results were compared with those of the experiments to verify the validity of the proposed model. The comparison study shows that the proposed dynamic model can describe dynamic behavior of the forming pressure of the hydroforming process to desirable accuracy.

This paper presents results from a wind tunnel study that examined the drag coefficient and wind flow over an asymmetric wave train immersed in turbulent boundary layer flow. The modeled wavy surface consisted of eight replicas of a statistically-valid hurricane-generated wave, located near the coast in the shoaling wave region. For an aerodynamically rough model surface, the air flow remained attached and a pronounced speed-up region was evident over the wave crest. A wavelength-averaged drag coefficient was determined using the wind profile method, common to both field and laboratory settings. It was found that the drag coefficient was approximately 50% higher than values obtained in deep water hurricane conditions. This study suggests that nearshore wave drag is markedly higher than over deep water waves of similar size, and provides the groundwork for assessing the impact of nearshore wave conditions on storm surge modeling and coastal wind engineering.

Reliability in safety-critical systems and equipment is of vital importance, so the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) has been widely used for many years in the nuclear industry to address reliability in a quantitative manner. As many nuclear power plants (NPPs) become digitalized, evaluating the reliability of safety-critical software has become an emerging issue. Due to a lack of available methods, in many conventional PSA models only hardware reliability is addressed with the assumption that software reliability is perfect or very high compared to hardware reliability. This study focused on developing a new method of safety-critical software reliability quantification, derived from hardware-software integrated environment testing. Since the complexity of hardware and software interaction makes the possible number of test cases for exhaustive testing well beyond a practically achievable range, an importance-oriented testing method that assures the most efficient test coverage was developed. Application to the test of an actual NPP reactor protection system demonstrated the applicability of the developed method and provided insight into complex software-based system reliability.

A series experiments were performed to evaluate mechanical behavior of non-oxide boride type ceramics formed on the AISI 1040 plain carbon steel. Boronizing was performed in a slurry salt bath consisting of borax, boric acid, and ferro-silicon at $950^{\circ}C$ for 2-6h. The AISI 1040 steel used as substrate material was containing 0.4%C, 0.13%Si, 0.65%Mn, 0.02%P, 0.014%S. The presence of non-oxide boride type ceramics $Fe_2B $ and FeB formed on the surface of steel was confirmed by metallographic technique and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The hardness of borides measured via Vickers indenter with a load of 2N reached a microhardness of up to 1800 DPN. The hardness of unborided steel was 185 DPN. The fracture toughness of borides measured by means of Vickers indenter with a load of 10N was about 2.30 MPa.$m^{1/2}$. The thickness of boride layers ranged from 72$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 145$\mu\textrm{m}$. Boride layers have a columnar morphology.
In the present work, the elasto-viscoplastic behavior, interactions between grains, and the texture evolution in polycrystalline materials subjected to finite deformations are modeled using a multiscale analysis procedure within a finite element framework. Computational homogenization is used to relate the grain (meso) scale to the macroscale. Specifically, a polycrystal is modeled by a material representative volume element (RVE) consisting of an aggregate of grains, and a periodic distribution of such unit cells is considered to describe material behavior locally on the macroscale. The elastic behavior is defined by a hyperelastic potential, and the viscoplastic response is modeled by a simple power law complemented by a work hardening equation. The finite element framework is based on a Lagrangian formulation, where a kinematic split of the deformation gradient into volume preserving and volumetric parts together with a three-field form of the Hu-Washizu variational principle is adopted to create a stable finite element method. Examples involving simple deformations of an aluminum alloy are modeled to predict inhomogeneous fields on the grain scale, and the macroscopic effective stress-strain curve and texture evolution are compared to those obtained using both upper and lower bound models.

This study describes a pressure tracking control of hydroforming process which is used for precision forming of sheet metals. The hydroforming operation is performed in the high-pressure chamber strictly controlled by pressure control valve and by the upward motion of a punch moving at a constant speed, The pressure tracking control is very difficult to design and often does not guarantee satisfactory performances be-cause of the punch motion and the nonlinearities and uncertainties of the hydraulic components. To account for these nonlinearities and uncertainties of the process and iterative learning controller is proposed using Cerebellar Model Arithmetic Computer (CMAC). The experimental results show that the proposed learning control is superior to any fixed gain controller in the sense that it enables the system to do the same work more effectively as the number of operation increases. In addition reardless of the uncertainties and nonlinearities of the form-ing process dynamics it can be effectively applied with little a priori knowledge abuot the process.
Metal colloidal particles have been prepared by a photo-chemical process in an aqueous solution containing semiconductor nanocrystallites. Metal colloidal particles produced in CdS and AgBr exhibit different absorption spectra. Au particles produced in solution with CdS show typical Au plasmon resonance absorption spectra. On the other hand Ag particles in solution with AgBr shows surface plasmon resonance absorption spectra which are red-shifted, as compared to that of a dispersion of homogeneous Ag colloidal particles in the same host. The extent of red-shift depends on the UV illumination time. This phenomenon is interpreted within the context of effective medium theory for small volume fractions. From the theory, a metal coated particle predicts Ag plasmon resonance, red shifted with respect to 400 nm that would be associated with a silver particle in solution. The absorption peak position is very sensitive to the coating thickness.
Recent progress in the computational fluid dynamics methods of two- and multiphase phase flows has already started opening up new exciting possibilities for using complete multidimensional models to simulate boiling systems. Combining this new theoretical and computational approach with novel experimental methods should dramatically improve both our understanding of the physics of boiling and the predictive capabilities of models at various scale levels. However, for the multidimensional modeling framework to become an effective predictive tool, it must be complemented with accurate mechanistic closure laws of local boiling mechanisms. Boiling heat transfer has been studied quite extensively before. However, it turns out that the prevailing approach to the analysis of experimental data for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling has been associated with formulating correlations which normally included several adjustable coefficients rather than based on first principle models of the underlying physical phenomena. One reason for this has been the tendency (driven by practical applications and industrial needs) to formulate single expressions which encompass a broad range of conditions and fluids. This, in turn, makes it difficult to identify various specific factors which can be independently modeled for different situations. The objective of this paper is to present a mechanistic modeling concept for both pool boiling and forced-convection boiling. The proposed approach is based on theoretical first-principle concepts, and uses a minimal number of coefficients which require calibration against experimental data. The proposed models have been validated against experimental data for water and parametrically tested. Model predictions are shown for a broad range of conditions.

One of the innovative and most promising approaches to new high-tech business formation from university is technology business incubators, which attempts to enhance small high-tech start-up firms' chances of survival. To date, there is few comprehensive effort to do a comparative study of technology business incubatiors between European Countries and U.S. to evaluate the impacts of them on regional development. With these consideration in mind this research anlayzed key findings of 6 case studies of university related Technology Business Incubators in the U.K., Germany, and U.S. to explore relationship of university to regional development. These included Cambridge Science Park(CSP) '||'&'||' West of Scotland Science Park in the U.K., Dortmund Technologiezentrum '||'&'||' Berlin Technologiezentrum, and Rensselaer Technology Development Center of the Georgia Institute of Technology in the U.S. The primary objective of this study was to advance our understanding of the impact and utility of technology business incubators and to get some policy implications for the future development in this area in Korea. Among the major question examined hear was "how do they contribute the overall economy of the communities in which they are located\ulcorner". The results of the case study about this question were very positive. The technology business incubators contributed to foster new high-tech small business formation from university, to facilitate the cooperation between university and industry and Incubator tenants created jobs and income, pay taxes, and in doing so, had a multiplier effects on the local economy. The same was true of incubator graduates. With this consideration in mind the university related business regioned development policy in korean local communities.

Of all the rapid tooling (RT) methods currently available, thick-layer laminated tooling is the most suitable for large-scale, low-cost dies and molds. Currently, the determination of a lamina's contour or profile and the associated slicing algorithms are based on existing rapid prototyping (RP) data manipulation technology. This paper presents a new adaptive slicing algorithm developed exclusively for profiled edge laminae (PEL) tooling PEL tooling is a thick-layer RT technique that involves the assembly of an array of laminae, whose top edges are simultaneously profiled and beveled using a line-of-sight cutting method based on a CAD model of the intended tool surface. The cutting profiles are based on the intersection curve obtained directly from the CAD model to ensure geometrical accuracy. The slicing algorithm determines the lamina thicknesses that minimize the dimensional error using a new tool shape error index. At the same time, the algorithm considers the available lamination thicknesses and desired lamina interface locations. We demonstrate the new slicing algorithm by developing a simple industrial PEL tool based on a CAD part shape.
