An annular flow type of copper electrolysis reactor was setup in order to generate the copper ions to remove algae in water. The operating characteristics of the reactor and the effect of copper ion on algae have been considered. By controling the applied current, the copper ion concentration could be obtained as desired level and the faradaic efficiency was above 90%. When the flow rate was increased, the copper ion concentration was linearly decreased due to the dilution effect and the effect of concentration overpotential was insignificant. With the increase of pH in water, the copper ion concentration was linearly decreased and not affected by the conductivity of the water. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was sharply decreased with the increase of copper ion concentration. The algae was effectively removed as the copper ion concentration was above 0.2 ppm. There was no difference between the copper ions obtained by dissolving copper sulfate and those produced by copper electrolysis. The algae removal efficiency was above 90% after 5 days as the copper ion concentration was above 0.4 ppm.
Although flotation techniques are often used for the removal of algal particles, the practicality of algae-harvesting technologies is limited owing to the complex and expensive facilities and equipment required for chemical coagulation. Here, we examined the feasibility of an approach to separating algal particles from water bodies without the need for chemical coagulants, depending on the condition of the algae, and to determine the optimal conditions. Using Anabaena sp., a cyanobacterium causes algal blooms in lakes, we stimulated auto-flocculation in algal particles without coagulants and conducted solid-liquid separation experiments of algal particles under various conditions. The six cultivation columns included in our analysis comprised four factors: Water temperature, light intensity, nutrients, and carbon source; auto-flocculation was induced under all treatments, with the exception of the treatment involving no limits to all factors, and algal particles were well-settled under all conditions for which auto-flocculation occurred. Meanwhile, flotation removal of auto-flocculated algal particles was attained only when nutrients were blocked after algae were grown in an optimal medium. However, no significant differences were detected between the functional groups of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) of floated and settled algal particles in the FT-IR peak, which can cause attachment by collision with micro-bubbles.

This study used a batch DAF (dissolved air flotation) jar tester to evaluate the algae removal efficiency of alum and PAC coagulants during coagulation, flocculation, and flotation. Optimal coagulant dosages were 0.06 ~ 0.15 mL/L (12.0 ~ 26.0 mg Al/L,17%), 0.08 ~ 0.20 mL/L (10.0 ~ 24.0 mg Al/L, 12%), 0.25 ~ 0.30 mL/L (25.0 ~ 30.0 mg Al/L, 10%) for PAC, and 3.0 ~ 5.0 mL/L (81.0 ~ 135.0 mg Al/L, 2.7%) for alum. Turbidity of treated water was 1.0 ~ 2.0 NTU in optimal coagulation, flocculation, and flotation conditions for the four coagulants types. The amount of coagulant injected tended to decrease with increasing Al content in the coagulant, as follows : 17% PAC < 12% PAC < 10% PAC < 2.7% alum. Turbidity removal efficiencies were in the order of 12% PAC (93.6%) > 10% PAC (92.7%) > 17% PAC (91.3%) > 2.7% Alum (88.1%).
Even though the development of livestock industry in Asia and Australasia has brought the economic growth and thus elevated the living standard in these areas, it has also brought the pollution caused by the increasing amount of animal wastes. Among them, Japan probably is the first country that suffered from the animal waste pollution as early as in 1970s. Nowadays, the animal waste pollution has been a common problem for almost every countries in this region. To solve it, different measures and regulations have been implemented in many countries. In this paper, different methods for animal waste disposal are discussed, including: manure-bed animal housing, composting, anaerobic treatment, odor control, utilization of biogas, aerobic treatment, three-step process, N and P removal, land application, cultivation of algae, anaerobic treatment of dead animals. It is hoped that an animal industry without pollution can be achieved in the future.
In recent years the accumulation of heavy metals in microorganisms, the biosorption has received much attention because of various environmental application. We have been to research the biosorption characteristics using algae, Spirulina, for the removal of heavy metal ions in industrial and polluted waters. In the adsorption of single heavy metal ions, the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10min., and optimum pH and reaction temperature were 4.5-5 and 30-35$\circ $C, respectively. Under the above conditions, the maximum amounts of Pb, Cu, and Cd adsorbed to the unit weight of Spirulina were 107.6mg/g, 78.0mg/g, and 65.6mg/g, and three values were 1.45, 1.56, and 1.26 times higher than those adsorbed to the unit weight of activated carbon under same conditions. The adsorption kinetics of Pb, Cu, and Cd were fitted very well to the Freundlich isotherm and BET isotherm. Biosorption experiments in single ion solutions and binary ions solutions showed higher removal efficiency in the single ion solutions than in binary ions solutions.
This study was carried out to compare ozonation with photocatalysis degradation for removal Geosmin of algae byproduct. The change of pH was decresed from 7.02 to 2.8 after contact time 480 minute for ozonation. In case of UV-germicidal lamp, pH was very quickly increased from 7.02 to 7.5, but Halogen lamp did very slowly change pH. Geosmin degradation ratio was as following, UV-germicidal lamp/TiO2(100mg/L) O3>UV-germicidal lamp/TiO2(50mg/L)>UV-germicidal lamp(10W)>halogen lamp(50W). Instead of TiO2 suspension solution, Geosmin degradation ratio was very low using hollow bead and pellet as coated TiO2. As a result of identifing byproducts, ozonation generated three species of aldehyde such as 3-Heptanone and three species of alcohol such as Heptanal, but photocatalysis formed 1, 14-Tetradecanediol infinitesimally.
In the coagulation/sedimentation (C/S) process of the water treatment process, the inflow of massive algal bloom causes many problems including fouling of filter media. This study was conducted to find out the way to remove the algae's harmful effects by addition of pre-treatment prior to C/S process. Many Jar-tests were conducted such as (1) ACF (Algae Coagulation Flotation) process using natural algae coagulant (Water $Health^{(R)}$), (2) ACF + C/S process and (3) C/S process with a variety of conditions using cultured algae. The average values of turbidity were (1) 0.42 NTU for ACF process, (2) 0.13 NTU for ACF + C/S process and (3) 0.25 NTU for C/S process. It was shown that the treatment efficiency of ACF process could get low turbidity results, and ACF + C/S process could achieve more efficient results than those of C/S process. Any negative effects of ACF process to the efficiency of C/S process were not observed in ACF + C/S process. In order to reduce the unfavorable effects of algae, it was found out that the introduction of ACF process in the forms of (1) ACF or (2) ACF + C/S could be one of the effective and alternative solutions.

We investigated the effect on the removal of BOD, SS, TN and TP and algal growth inhibition of Vegetated Artificial Floating Island (VAFI), by examining microorganism activity and nutrient uptake in the batch test of various conditions: (1) Blank (Control group), (2) VAFI of $0.25m^2$, (3) AFI of $0.25m^2$ which has no vegetation, (4) buoyant plate of $0.25m^2$, (5) buoyant plate of $0.25m^2$ with linear media. The proportion of BOD removal in the VAFI, AFI, buoyant plate and buoyant plate with media were 82.7, 80.8, 45.2% and 59.6% respectively. TN removal in the VAFI, AFI and buoyant plate with media were 51.2, 31.7% and 25.1% respectively. TP removal in the VAFI, AFI, buoyant plate and buoyant plate with media were 23.3, 16.7, 10.0% and 13.3% respectively. Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ removal in the VAFI was 97.9%. The factors of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ removal in the VAFI accounted for the shading effect of 35.1%, microorganisms activity of 61%, and plant root of 1.8%.

Batch experiments were conducted to investigate growth and nutrient removal performance of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris by using piggery wastewater in different concentration of pollutants and the common growth models (logistic, Gompertz and Richards) were applied to compare microalgal growth parameters. Removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) by Chlorella vulgaris showed correlation with biomass increase, implying nutrient uptake coupled with microalgae growth. The higher the levels of suspended solids (SS), COD and ammonia nitrogen were in the wastewater, the worse growth of Chlorella vulgaris was observed, showing the occurrence of growth inhibition in higher concentration of those pollutants. The growth parameters were estimated by non-linear regression of three growth curves for comparative analyses. Determination of growth parameters were more accurate with population as a variable than the logarithm of population in terms of R square. Richards model represented better fit comparing with logistic and Gompertz model. However, Richards model showed some complexity and sensitivity in calculation. In the cases tested, both logistic and Gompertz equation were proper to describe the growth of microalgae on piggery wastewater as well as easy to application.
