  • Effects of remote hydrogen plasma cleaning process parameters on the removal of Fe impurities on Si surfaces and the Fe removal mechanism were investigated. Fe removal efficiency is enhanced with decreasing the plasma exposure time and increasing the rf-power. The optimum plasma exposure time and rf-power are 1 min and 100W. respectively, in the range below 10 min and 100W. Fe removal efficiency is better under lower pressures than higher pressures, and the optimum $\textrm{H}_2$ flow rate was found to be 20 and 60sccm, respectively, under a low and a high pressure. The post-RHP(remote hydrogen plasma) annealing enhanced metallic contaminants removal efficiency, and the highest efficiency was achieved at $600^{\circ}C$. According to the AFM analysis results Si surface roughness was improved by 30-50%, which seems to be due to the removal of particles by the plasma cleaning. Also. Fe impurities removal mechanisms by remote hydrogen plasma are discussed.

  • Removing hazardous materials from water resources is very important for efficient utilization of the resources, and adsorptive removal is regarded as a competitive technology when good adsorbents with high capacity/selectivity are available. Metal-organic framework (MOF), composed of both organic and inorganic (metallic) species, have been tried for various adsorptions because of huge surface area/pore volume, well-defined pore structure, and facile functionalization. In this review, we summarized technologies on adsorptive removal of hazardous organics from water mainly using MOFs as adsorbents. Instead of reporting high adsorption capacity or rate, we summarized mechanisms of interaction between adsorbates (organics) and adsorbents (MOFs) and methods to modify or functionalize MOFs for effective adsorptions. We expect for readers of this review to understand needed characteristics of adsorbents for the adsorptive removal, functionalization of MOFs for effective adsorption and so on. Moreover, they might have an idea on storage and delivery of organics via understanding of the mechanism of adsorption and interaction.

  • Reductive degradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated to evaluate the feasibility of using it for in-situ groundwater remediation. Batch experiments were conducted to quantify the kinetics and efficiency of RDX removal by nZVI, and to determine the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ionic strength on this process. Experimental results showed that the reduction of RDX by nZVI followed pseudo-first order kinetics with the observed rate constant (kobs) in the range of 0.0056-0.0192 min−1. Column tests were conducted to quantify the removal of RDX by nZVI under real groundwater conditions and evaluate the potential efficacy of nZVI for this purpose in real conditions. In column experiment, RDX removal capacity of nZVI was determined to be 82,500 mg/kg nZVI. pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and DO concentration varied significantly during the column experiments; the occurrence of these changes suggests that monitoring these quantities may be useful in evaluation of the reactivity of nZVI, because the most critical mechanisms for RDX removal are based on the chemical reduction reactions. These results revealed that nZVI can significantly degrade RDX and that use of nZVI could be an effective method for in-situ remediation of RDX-contaminated groundwater.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the removal efficiencies of organic matter and pharmaceuticals and to identify the removal mechanism of pharmaceuticals using sand obtained from Hwangryong River in Jangsung. Batch and column studies were used to simulate managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems. All experiments were performed using field effluent containing pharmaceuticals from Damyang Wastewater Treatment Plant as an influent. Based on the removal results of organic matter and pharmaceuticals from the batch and column experiments, soil organic matter (SOM) and microbial activity were found to effectively remove target contaminants. The removal of organic matter was found to increase under biotic conditions. Neutral and cation pharmaceuticals (iopromide, estrone, and trimethoprim) exhibited removal efficiencies higher than 70% from natural sand and baked sand media in batch and column studies. Carbamazepine persisted in the sand batch and column studies. Anion pharmaceuticals (ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and diclofenac) can be removed under conditions featuring high SOM and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations in the sand surface. Based on the experimental Batch and column results, biodegradation and sorption were found to be important mechanisms for the removal of pharmaceuticals within the simulated MAR systems.

  • In this research, heavy metals and T-P removal characteristics of plated wastewater are derived using BPC(Break Point Chlorination) process. AA sedimentation pond outflow(Influence) was evaluated for the removal efficiency of heavy metal(Ni) and T-P at a reaction time of 25 minutes by NaOCl input volume(9, 11, 13 and 15 mL). In the case, the higher the NaOCl input volumes, the higher the ORP values were maintained and the higher the removal efficiency tended to be. On the other hand, T-P was judged to have a low relationship between the ORP value and the removal efficiency. In addition, the efficiency of removal heavy metals and T-P in the plated wastewater by injecting 10 mL, 15 mL, 20 mL and 25 mL NaOCl, increased as the amount of NaOCl injected increased, the amount of NaOH input for pH increased. It was found that suspended solid in effluence also increased. It was also observed that the color of the plating wastewater changed from yellowish green to green to charcoal gray to black as the amount of NaOCl injected increased. Treatment characteristics of the reaction time, the longer the reaction time with the substance to be treated after the input of NaOCl, the more the heavy metal removal efficiency tended to increase. Through XRF analysis of the sludge, the constituents in the sludge such as NaCNO, CNCl, Na3PO4, CrO4, 2Na2CrO4 and 2NaNO3 will be analyzed in detail, and the mechanisms of the reaction between the plated wastewater and the complex compound will be elucidated.

  • In nuclear power plants, there is a risk of thermal fatigue in equipment and piping affecting system soundness because the temperature change of the system accompanies in every operation and shutdown. Therefore, in order to prevent the excess of the fatigue limit during the lifetime of plants, the fatigue limit of each piping material is determined in the designing stage. However, there are many cases where equipment or piping is locally subjected to thermal fatigue that is not considered in the design, resulting in damage to the equipment and piping, and failure during operation. Currently, local thermal fatigue generation mechanisms that are not taken into account in the design stage are gradually being identified. In this paper, the effects of the fluid temperature fluctuations on the piping soundness due to the mixing of hot and cold water, one of the local thermal fatigue generating mechanisms, were evaluated.

  • Fretting is the oscillatory motion with very small amplitudes, which usually occurs between two solid surfaces in contact. Fretting wear is the removal of material from contacting surfaces through fretting action. Fretting wear of steam generator tubes in nuclear power plant becomes a serious problem in recent years. The materials for the tubes usually are Inconel 690 (I-690) and Inconel 600 (I-600). In this paper, fretting wear tests for I-690 and I-600 were performed under various applied loads in water at room temperature. Results showed that the fretting wear loss of I-690 and I-600 tubes was largely influenced by stick-slip. The fretting wear mechanisms were the abrasive wear in slip regime and the delamination wear in stick regime. Also, I-690 had somewhat better wear resistance than I-600.

  • In the previous report1), the grinding characteristics of quartz were investigated. In this paper, the grinding mechanisms of brittle materials including ceramics and quartz are modeled and a new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of such materials. A set of experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the plastic deformation is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR. In the case of quartz, the material was removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR and by plastic deformation in a higher value of it. SDR is not affected by wheel mesh size when brittle fracture occured. But in the plastic deformation case, SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • Membrane biofouling impedes wide application of membrane bioreactor (MBR) for wastewater treatment. Recently, quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms are accounted for one of major mechanisms in biofouling of MBRs. In this study, vanillin was applied to investigate reduction of biofouling in MBRs. MBR sludge was analyzed to contain QS signal molecules by cross-feeding biosensor assay and HPLC. In addition, the inhibitory activity of vanillin against bacterial quorum sensing was verified using an indicator strain CV026. The vanillin doses greater than 125 mg/L to 100 mL of MBR sludge showed 25% reduction of biofilm formed on the membrane surfaces. Two MBRs, i.e., a typical MBR as a control and an MBR with vanillin, were operated. The TMP increases of the control MBR were more rapid compared to those of the MBR with the vanillin dose of 250 mg/L. The treatment efficiencies of the two MBRs on organic removal and MLSS were maintained relatively constant. Extracellular polymeric substance concentrations measured at the end of the MBR operation were 173 mg/g biocake for the control MBR and 119 mg/g biocake for the MBR with vanillin. Vanillin shows great potential as an anti-biofouling agent for MBRs without any interference on microbial activity for wastewater treatment.

  • The high oxidants, which occur the daily maximum concentrations in the afternoon, are transported into the other region via long range transport mechanisms or trapped within the shallow mixing boundary layer and then removed physically (deposition, transport by mountain wind, etc.) and chemically (reaction with local sources). Therefore, modeling formation of photochemical oxidants requires a complex description of both chemical and meteorolog ital processecs . In this study, as a part of air quality studies, we reviewed various aspects of photochemical modeling on the basis of currently available literature. The result of the review shows that the model is based on a set of coupled continuity equations describing advection, diffusion, transport, deposition, chemistry, emission. Also photochemical oxidant models require a large amount of input data concerned with all aspects of the ozone life cycle. First, emission inventories of hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides, with appropriate spatial and temporal resolution. Second, chemical and photochemical data allowing the quantitative description of the formation of ozone and other photochemically-generated secondary pollutants. Third, dry deposition mechanisms particularly for ozone, PAN and hydrogen peroxide to account for their removal by absorption on the ground, crops, natural vegetation, man-made and water surfaces. Finally, meteorological data describing the transport of primary pollutants away from their sources and of secondary pollutants towards the sensitive receptors where environmental damage may occur. In order to improve our present study, shortcomings and limitation of existing models are pointed out and verification Process through observation is emphasized.
