Automation Development in Water and Wastewater Systems

  • Advanced control is getting increasingly demanded in water and wastewater treatment systems. Various case studies have shown significant savings in operating costs, including energy costs, and remarkably short payback times. It has been demonstrated that instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) may increase the capacity of biological nutrient removing wastewater treatment plants by 10-30% today. With further understanding and exploitation of the mechanisms involved in biological nutrient removal the improvements due to ICA may reach another 20-50% of the total system investments within the next 10-20 years. Disturbances are the reason for control of any system. In a wastewater treatment system they are mostly related to the load variations, but many disturbances are created also within the plant. In water supply systems some of the major disturbances are related the customer demand as well as to leakages or bursts in the pipelines or the distribution networks. Hardly any system operates in steady state but is more or less in a transient state all the time. Water and energy are closely related. The role of energy in water and wastewater operations is discussed. With increasing energy costs and the threatening climate changes this issue will grow in importance.

합성 제올라이트를 이용한 pH에 따른 Cu와 Zn 이온의 흡착특성 (Cu and Zn Ions Adsorption Properties at Various pH with a Synthetic Zeolite)

  • The removal property of Cu and Zn ions by chemical precipitation and adsorption using zeolite(Z-C1) prepared from coal fly ash(CFA) were evaluated in this study. Adsorption kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms described to analyze parameters and correlation factors with Lagergen $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ order model and Langmuir and Freundlich model. Analysis of adsorption kinetics data revealed that the pseudo $2^{nd}$ order kinetics mechanism was predominant. The equilibrium data in pH 3 - 5 were able to be fitted well to a Langmuir model, by which the maximum adsorption capacities($q_{max}$) were determined at 124.9 - 140.1 mg $Cu^{2+}/g$ and 153.2 - 166.9 mg $Zn^{2+}/g$, respectively. We found that Z-C1 has a potential application as absorbents in metal ion recovery with low pH.

고올 윤활상태에서 형성된 경계막의 특성에 관한 연구 (Characterization of the Boundary Films Formed in Lubricated Sliding at High Temperatures)

  • The boundary films formed in sliding on steel surfaces were characterized using various lubricants. The mechanism of boundary film formation and loss was investigated over a range of temperature. The thickness of the boundary films was monitored in-situ by an ellipsometer, and the composition of the films was analyzed by XPS. The performance of the lubricants is closely associated with boundary film forming ability. In order to achieve high load carrying capacity, a boundary film must be formed on the surface. Sliding is necessary to form the films and some time is also required. As temperature increases, chemical reactivity increases the film formation rate, while the film removal rate increases due to thg decrease of durability of the boundary film material. There is a balance between these two competing mechanisms and this balance is reflected in the boundary film thickness.

Quartz의 연삭 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Grinding Characteristics of the Quartz)

  • This study reports the grinding characteristics of quartz. Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions including wheel mesh, table speed and depth of cut. The grinding forces and specific grinding energies were measured. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM. A new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of quartz. A set of experiments was performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the ductile mode is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR whereas the material is removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • The mechanisms controlling the intensity and duration of synaptic transmission are numerous. Once an action potential reaches a nerve terminal, the stored neurotransmitters are released in a quantum fashion into the synaptic cleft. At that point neurotransmitters can act on post-synaptic receptors to elicit an action on the post-synaptic cell or net at so-called auto-receptors that are located on the presynaptic side and which often regulate the further release of the neutotransmitter. Whereas the action of the neurotransmitter receptors is regulated by desensitization phenomenon, the major mechanism by which the intensity and duration of neurotransmitter action is presumably regulated by either its degradation or its removal from the synaptic cleft. In the central nervous system, specialized proteins located in fe plasma membrane of presynaptic terminals function to rapidly remove neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft in a sodium chloride-dependent fashion. These proteins have been referred to as uptake sites or neurotransmitter transporters. Once taken up by the plasma membrane transporters, neurotransmitters are repackaged into secretory vesicles by distinct transporters which depend on a proton gradient.

  • 중금속 생물흡착에 대한 최근의 연구는 흡착 기작과 원리에 중점을 두고 있다. 효과적인 금속 제거/회수 공정설계를 위하여 모든 형태의 적용에 최적화가 되어지고 있다. 그 최적화는 공정의 수학적 모델에 의한 컴퓨터 모사에 바탕을 두고 효과적으로 수행되어지고 있다. 그래서 등온흡착평형에 대한 연구가 중요하며 단일성분과 다성분계를 포함하는 방법이 소개하였다.

Ligamentum Flavum Hematoma in the Adjacent Segment after a long Level Fusion

  • Ligamentum flavum hematoma (LFH) is a very rare condition of dural compression; most are observed in the mobile cervical and lumbar spine regions. A 67-year-old man who had a long level interbody fusion at L3-S1 four years ago presented with symptoms suggestive of dural compression. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a posterior semicircular mass located at the adjacent L2-L3 level. After decompression of the spinal canal and removal of the mass lesion, pathological examination of the surgical specimen revealed a hematoma within the ligamentum. The patient fully recovered to normal status after surgery. Here, we report our experience with a LFH in the adjacent segment after a long level fusion procedure and discuss the possible associated mechanisms.

Experimental Studies on Wet Scavenging of Atmospheric Aerosols by Rain Drops

  • Wet scavenging by rain drops is a most important removal process of air pollutants. In order to study the scavenging mechanisms of aerosol particles, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. Rain water were collected continuously and separated into the soluble and insoluble components. The elemental concentrations in both components were determined by a PIXE analysis. The physical and chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols during the rainfall events were measured simultaneously. The elemental concentrations in rain water decreased substantially just after rain started and then gradually declined in subsequential rain fall exceeding 1.0 mm. The large particles were scavenged more easily than the fine particles. Fe, Ti and Si in rain water were in high insoluble state. Contrarily, almost whole of S was dissolved in rain water.

  • Atomic force microscope(AFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales ranging from atomic and molecular to microscale. AFM with suitable tips is being used for nanofabrication nanomachining purposes. In this paper, machining characteristics of silicon have been investigated by nano indentation and nano scratch. Mechanisms of material removal on the microscale are studied and the Taguchi method is introduced to acquire optimum parameters for nanomachining. This work shows effectiveness of the Taguchi method in nanomachining. Also, Acoustic Emission(AE) is introduced for the monitoring of nanomachining.

A Co-expression Network of Drought Stress-related Genes in Chinese Cabbage

  • Plants have evolved to adapt to abiotic stresses, such as salt, cold, and drought stress. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of drought resistance mechanisms by constructing a gene co-expression network in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis L.). This drought stress co-expression network has 1,560 nodes, 4,731 edges, and 79 connected components. Based on genes that showed significant co-expression in the network, drought tolerance was associated with the induction of reactive oxygen species removal by raffinose family oligosaccharides and inositol metabolism. This network could be a useful tool for predicting the functions of genes involved in drought stress resistance in Chinese cabbage.
