  • The electrical and chemical properties of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process for the benzene removal were investigated. The benzene removal was initiated with the applied voltage higher than the discharge onset value. The removal efficiency over 95 % was obtained at approximately 1.6 kJ lite $r^{r-1}$ of the electrical energy density. The increase of the inlet concentration decreased the removal efficiency. However, the benzene decomposition rate increased with the inlet concentration . While the increase of the gas retention time enhanced the removal efficiency, the decomposition rate decreased. Identification of the optimum condition between the decomposition rate and the removal efficiency is required for field applications of the DBD process.s.

  • A mathematical model for organic removal efficiency was investigated in a fluidized bed biofilm reactor by changing the feed flow rate, the residence time and the recycle flow rate. In batch experiment, organic removal could be assumed as first order and an intrinsic first order rate constant(k1) was found $6.4{\times}^{-6}cm^3/mg{\cdot}sec$ at influent COD range of 3040 - 6620 mg/L. In continuous experiment, at the condition of the influent COD, 3040 mg/L, the superficial upflow velocity, 0.47 cm/sec, the biofilm thickness 336 ${\mu}m$ and the biofilm dry density 0.091 g/mL, the calculated COD removal efficiency from the mathematical model gave 60% which was very close to the observed value of 66 %. As the feed flow rate was increased, the COD removal efficiency was sharply decreased and at constant feed flow rate, the COD removal efficiency was decreased also as the residence time being decreased.

  • This study was conducted to investigate anoxic-RBC-anoxic-RBC process and its application to remove biologically organics and nitrogen. BOD and total-nitrogen(T-N) removal efficiencies were decreased as volumetric loading rate increased. But, the removal efficiency changes of T-N were little, as compared to BOD. Increase of internal recycle rate had few affect of BOD and T-N removal rates. Also, influent allocation(to 2nd anoxic reactor) had few affect of BOD removal efficiency rate. However, when the influent allocation rate was 30%, T-N removal efficiency was increased to 84.1 %. BOD/N ratio applied to 2nd anoxic reactor was increased to range of 3.65-4.37 as influent allocation rate increased to range 20∼35%. But, it might also cause adverse effect such as decrease of denitrification rate in excessive influent allocation rate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the contaminants removal efficiency and the optimal operating parameters by the internal recycle rate (IRR) in the combining A2/O process with fixed film. The average removal efficiency of BOD and COD was 92.5%~94.6%, 73.9%~87.0% in RUN 1 and 91.9%~94.7%, 77.7%~89.0% in RUN 2, respectively. Organic removal efficiency, at two different hydraulic retention time of 10 and 14hr, was similar. At 50% of the internal recycle rate, organic removal efficiency was somewhat higher than the other. Total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) were removed, highly, at 50% of internal recycle rate. It could be suggested by this study that the optimum internal recycle rate is 50% and hydraulic retention time is 14hr.

  • This study was carried out to develop the new process for RBC process which is capable of nutrient removal and to obtain its design parameters for Sludge Settling Type Rotating Biological Contactors by comparing RBC with RBC combined with HBR (Hanmee Bio-Reactor). To achieve more than 90% of organic removal efficiency, organic loading rate less than $6.0g\;BOD/m^2/d$ is recommended. Nitrification rate was about 90% at $6.0g\;BOD/m^2/d$. TN removal efficiency of RBC+HBR was higher than those of RBC1 and RBC2. TN removal efficiency at condition of $5.0g\;BOD/m^2/d$ was about 60% in RBC1. When BOD loading rate was $6.0g\;BOD/m^2/d$. TN removal efficiencies in RBC2 and RBC+HBR were about 70%, 80%, respectively. TP removal efficiency was more than about 67% for RBC1, about 63% for RBC2 and about 71 % for RBC+HBR at the same loading rate. From the blank experiment to observe removal efficiency in the first stage, it can be known that COD removal efficiency was about 30% and suspend solids settling rate was about 45%. It was proved that RBC+HBR is much better in sludge dewatering than RBC.

  • The aims of this study is to examine the effects of the changes in HRT(Hydraulic Retention Time) and media charge in a water-mill, among other operation factors, on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal in order to use up-flow anaerobic reactors, anoxic reactors and water-mill aerobic reactors for sewage treatment. The extension of HRT improved the nitrogen removal efficiency, however the removal pattern was constant regardless of HRT. The removal of phosphorus was constant (80%-90%) regardless of the change in HRT. The removal rate with change in influx load varied such that at the OLR (Organic Load Rate) of 1-3 kg/d, the T-N removal efficiency was 80.7%-88.9% and the T-P removal efficiency was 82.9%-89.3% while at the NLR (Nitrogen Loading Rate) of 0.108-0.156 kg/d the removal efficiencies were 80.7-88.9% (T-N) and 82.9-89.3% (T-P). The analyses of the nitrogen and phosphorous removal characteristics with the C/N and C/P ratio showed that the mean T-N removal rate was 88% at the C/N ratio of 1.2-2.6, and that the mean T-P removal rate was 86% at the C/P ratio of 7.2-14.1. Also, the analysis of nitrogen and phosphorous removal characteristics were analyzed in relation to media charge. The comparison between with and without media charge in the water-mill showed that while the nitrogen removal efficiencies were 86-94% and 85-89% respectively, the difference of phosphorous removal efficiencies were between the two conditions was not significant, thus it suggested that the media charge has less effect on the removal efficiency of phosphorous compared to that of nitrogen.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the efficiencies of DEPHANOX and Modified-DEPHANOX, which were devoloped to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency in municipal wastewater treatment. In the results, removal efficiency of organic matters was not affected much by increased loading rate of organic matters which is contained in influent. The nitrogen removal efficiencies according to the loading rate of influent TN was decreased drastically in conditions of over $0.2kg/m^3{\cdot}day$, which is T-N loading rate, and the DEPHANOX process was affected more sensitively than the M-DEPHANOX was. When the temperature was altered from $25^{\circ}C$ to $16^{\circ}C$ at HRT 6hrs, the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was still over 90% and it was concluded that both DEPHANOX and M-DEPHANOX were strong enough to endure temperature variation. Moreover, both processes showed over 90% in ammonia removal efficiencies in over HRT 5hrs, so it was concluded that they were strong in HRT variation. M-DEPHANOX process showed a higher value than DEPHANOX did in T-N removal efficiency to the extent of 4~21 %, which resulted from differency of denitrification rates and the biosorption efficiency of organic matter in both processes. In the condition of HRT less than 4hrs, concentrations of ammonia nitrogen contained in effluents and nitrification reactors, might be sensitively affected by biosorption efficiency of organic matters in first separation tank. In the effect of effluent nitrate concentration in phosphorus removal, the more effluent nitrate concentration was decreased, the more phosphorus removal efficiency was increased. This result is related to the decrease of concentration of effluent nitrate which resulted from nitrification inhibition by decreased HRT.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the high rate biological reactor such as lab scale reactor before the application in site, and to get the basic data for possibility using liquid fertilizer with the effluent from biological reactor when the centrifugal machine was applied. The total volume of this reactor in 6 L, in composted of anoxic reactor (2 L), aerobic reactor (2 L), and nitification reactor (2 L). BOD removal efficiency rates when centrifugal machine was applied after effluent from biological reactor are over than 95%. This biological reactor was required post process to satisfy the effluent standards, and was need centrifugal machine to control the washout of microbes in the reactor. T-N removal efficiency rate in HRT 24 hr with centrifugation is 80.0%, and it is desirable to operate less than $1.3kgN/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 70% of T-N removal efficiency rate. T-P removal efficiency rate in HRT 24 hr is 68.2%, and become higher 71.3% after centrifugation. Considering in the 28.6% T-N removal efficiency rate, the nitrogen contents of the effluent from reactor is 0.34% to satisfy the liquid fertilizer.

  • This study is carried out to get the basic design parameters for phospate removal facilites from wastewater by Tobermolite. The phosphate removal by the apatite formation on the surface was affected by several important factors, temperature, ions present in wastewater stream, contact time, recirculation rate, and etc. In case of the temperature, with the increase of temperature, the apatite formation was accelerated. When temperature increased from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, removal efficiency of phosphate increased from 83 % to 93 %. An increase of calcium and fluoride ion content increase the apatite formation, however, bicarbonate and magnesium ion inhibited the crystallization of apatite. As expected, when the recirculation rate was increased from 1 Q to 3 Q, at EBCT (Empty Bed Contact Time) 60min enhanced removal efficiency was observed. The more the recirculation rate increased, the more the removal efficiency increased. According to the results of column experiment using an actual wastewater with low and high phosphate concentration (5 mg/L and 50 mg/L-P), the removal efficiency was 77 % at EBCT of 45 min, and 80 % at 60 min. It was suggested that optimum EBCT was 45 min.
