Studies on the Effluent Characteristics of Dyeing Wastewater by Textile Classification (섬유 형태에 따른 염색폐수 배출특성 연구)

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of the non-biodegradable material, the $BOD_5/COD_{Cr}$ ratio was used. The average ratio of industrial complex's influent wastewater was 2.29~2.96, the effluent ratio was 4.29~19.0. The removal efficiency of $UV_{254}$ by physicochemical treatment was 22.8~94.7% and 5.3~77.2% by biological treatment, respectively. Of the wastewater removal efficiency for each of the items, the $BOD_5$ treatment efficiency was the greatest at 97.3% and the color & TN treatment efficiency was 40~70%. The study of the economical assessment showed that the complex as well as the individual companies spent 722~1,298 won for each ton of treated wastewater. All of the wastewater treatment facilities spent the most money on chemicals needed to treat the wastewater. The total cost for Nylon manufacturing wastewater treatment plant was the greatest while the total cost for cotton manufacturing wastewater treatment plant turned out to the lowest. As respects of removal efficiency and economocal assessment, Polyester A and Cotton manufacturing wastewater treatment plants were better effective than a dyeing industrial complex wastewater treatment plant.

Study on Change of Microbial Activity and Removal Efficiency of Phosphorus with Alum Injection in the Biological Process (생물학적 처리공정 내 Alum 주입에 따른 인 처리 효율과 미생물 활성도 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The effects of coagulants on the microorganisms when they are injected directly into the biological treatment facility for T-P removal have been easily observed from the results of past experiments. As such this study is set out to derive the effective plans for the coagulant dosage by analyzing the effects of the injected coagulant on the microbial activity during the chemical treatment for T-P removal. The research methods entailed the assessment of removal efficiency of T-P according to the coagulant dosage while changing the molar ration between Alum and influent phosphorus. At the same time Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate (SOUR) according to the coagulant dosage was measured. SOUR was used as a method for indirect assessment of the microbial activity according to the coagulant dosage. The results from the study showed that with the increase in the alum dosage, the removal efficiency T-P tended to increase. On the other hand, the increase in coagulant dosage resulted in the decrease in SOUR, which indicates the decrease in the microbial activity. Such reduction in the activity could be explained by the increase in the concentration of removal efficiency of $TBOD_5$. Based on experiment results from the study, it is determined that coagulant dosage affects the microbial activity. Moreover, the indirect assessment on the microbial activity using SOUR is considered possible.

Comparative Efficiency Evaluation of Air Cleaners for Improving Indoor Air Quality (실내용 공기청정기 유형별 실내환경개선 성능에 대한 비교평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of indoor air cleaners and to inform how to select them correctly to the users. The efficiencies of removing suspended bacteria per hour were $64.3{\pm}13.1%$ for filter, wet, and complex type, respectively, which showed the complex type was the most efficient. The removal efficiencies of formaldehyde (HCHO) after two hours operation of air cleaners showed 88.3% and 81.1% for filter and wet type, respectively. The efficiency of complex type, with removal rate of 55.5~58.4%, was decreased after 30 minutes operation. Therefore, it is recommended to perform over 60 minutes when doing air cleaner certification test for HCHO removal efficiency. Generally, air cleaners having low wind volume showed higher efficiency. All tested air cleaners had no potential for removing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which is toxic substances, and it is desirable to develop a device which can control these substances. The results also confirmed that there was no ozone production from all tested air cleaners. And it is recommended to ventilate for 20 minutes every four hours to maintain 50% ventilation status.

  • This study was performed for the application of porous concrete blocks and aquatic plants for the water purification in small urban stream. This study investigated the ability of water purification according to various environments, algae and aquatic plants. When the porous concrete was used as contact media, the average removal efficiencies of SS, BOD and COD were 85~95%, 50~60% and 65~75%, respectively. Also, when the porous concrete and aquatic plants was used the average removal efficiency of SS, BOD and COD were 90~95%, 60~70% and 70~80%, respectively. As the results, average removal efficiency of total nitrogen, at the condition of the porous concrete and aquatic plants, was about 40-50%, then, that of total phosphorus was about 60-70%.

  • Recently the water quality management policy gives priority to management the point source. Non-point pollution source is difficult to comprehend because those don't have certain outflow point and emission. There are many development and research about BMPs for manage the Non-point pollution source. Various methods of removal efficiency are presented for assessment of Best Management Practices (BMPs). In this study, retention time have effect on removal efficiency based on monitoring results of Grassed Swale is studied. Also, Compare a difference according to various methods of Grassed Swale removal efficiency. The result of removal efficiency analysis depending on retention time of Grassed Swale, removal efficiency is higher as retention time increases. To obtain a stable removal efficiency of Grassed Swale, retention time of Grassed Swale should be secure.

  • Settling Basins are one of the most important and popular methods for removal of suspended sediments irrigation and drainage networks or power canals taking off from an alluvial river and wastewater treatment plant. Improving the performance and so increasing sediment removal efficiency of settling basins by an alternative method is necessary. In the present work, the effect of baffle and its angle of attack with the flow (${\theta}$) on the sediment removal efficiency is investigated by conducting a series of experiments on a straight canal with 8 m length, 0.3 m width and 0.5 m height and 3 m length of basin equipped with an adjustable glass baffle. A numerical analysis has been carried out using ANSYS Fluent 3D software (a general purpose computational fluid dynamics simulation tool) for three Froude numbers from the experiments. The numerical and experimental results were found to match reasonably well.

  • This research categorized EIA target highways into following three types in order to minimize non-point source pollution from highway runoff. 1. Big drainage basin. 2. Small drainage basin. 3. Bridge section. The Natural, Filter and Swirl-Type devices were evaluated in terms of removal efficiency of TSS, BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, compatibility of site selection, economic feasibility, and maintenance convenience through which the final BMP was selected. According to the removal efficiency result, the area of Big and Small Drainage basin and bridge section had higher removal efficiency with natural facility than that of the Filter or Swirl-Type device. To make appropriate selection of highways'BMP for non-point source pollution, this study will aim to contribute to building more environmentally friendly highways by proposing the selection process that is made of 5 stages. 1. Selecting the target drainage basin. 2. Selecting the land for the mitigation facility. 3. Analysing the ease of maintenance. 4. Technically evaluating each installation. 5. Evaluating the effective implementation methods.

A Study of Non-point Source Reduction Efficiency by Constructed Wetland installed in Flood Pumping Station (빗물펌프장에 설치된 인공습지의 비점오염원 저감효율 연구)

  • The aim of this study was evaluated the effects of total rainfall, rainfall intensity and antecedent dry days and identify the correlation analysis with the EMC removal efficiency, in order to provide an understanding of the operation and maintenance factors of constructed wetland in flood pumping station. This study was conducted total of 20 monitoring in a catchment(326.2 ha) of constructed wetland in Ga-un flood pumping station located at the downstream of the Wang-suk stream. The determined EMC removal efficiencies were $36.04{\pm}9.45%$ for BOD, $38.50{\pm}13.50%$ for $COD_{Mn}$, $34.34{\pm}13.05%$ for TN and $34.22{\pm}14.27%$ for TP, respectively. These results showed that the pollutants concentration and EMC were reduced while passing through the constructed wetland. In the correlation analysis, the highly correlations with EMC removal efficiency of BOD and $COD_{Mn}$ were observed for total rainfall and rainfall intensity (P<0.05). However, the correlations were not found with TN and TP for rainfall variables.

Effect of Temperature on Removal of Ammonia in the Ceramic Biofilter Inoculated with Earthworm Casts (지렁이 분변토를 접종한 세라믹 바이오필터의 암모니아 제거에 미치는 온도의 영향)

  • Removal of ammonia using the porous ceramic biofilter inoculated with earthworm casts was characterized. By assuming a plug air flow in the biofilter and applying the Michaelis-Menten equation, the maximum removal rate of $NH_3$ was $280.7g-N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$($18.0g-N{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) at $30^{\circ}C$. $NH_3$ removal rate was increased as temperature increases from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$. The maximum removal rate was $285.8g-N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$($18.8g-N{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) at $35^{\circ}C$. At $15^{\circ}C$, the $NH_3$ removal rate was $122.8g-N{\cdot}m^{-3}{\cdot}h^{-1}$($8.1g-N{\cdot}kg^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$). When 210 ppm $NH_3$ was supplied to the biofilter at space velocity of $220h^{-1}$, the removal efficiency of $NH_3$ at 15, 25, 30 and $35^{\circ}C$ was 80, 90, 95, and 96%, respectively. The removal rate of the ceramic biofilter was 3 to 15 times higher than other biofilters comparing the removal efficiency of $NH_3$ per unit volume of carrier. This result indicates that earthworm casts and porous ceramics are very good inoculum source and carrier, respectively, for the $NH_3$-degrading biofilter.

Evaluation of Pollution Loads Removal Efficiency of Vegetation Buffer Strips Using a Distributed Watershed Model (분포형 유역모델을 이용한 식생여과대의 오염부하 저감효과 분석)

  • A distributed watershed model CAMEL(Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses) was applied to a part of grazing grassland and vegetation buffer strip(VBS) located in Daegwanryeong, Korea. A set of scenario analyses was carried out for grassland and VBS with various combinations of VBS widths, soil textures and ground surface slopes. The simulation results indicate that annual direct runoff decreases with wider VBS and the removal efficiency of pollutants generally decrease with steeper slopes. The removal efficiency of sediment is not significantly different with VBS widths. For gentle and medium slopes($10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$), the removal efficiency of TOC and TN is not significantly different with VBS widths. As for a steep slope($30^{\circ}$), however, the removal efficiency of TOC and TN increases with narrower VBS. The removal efficiency of TP is generally high except for medium and steep slope of sandy loam where the removal efficiency of TP increases with wider VBS. This result of TP is contrary to the results of TOC and TN due to the adsorption characteristics of phosphorus associated with fine sediment particles. It is expected that CAMEL can be used for evaluating the effectiveness of VBS to reduce non-point source pollution discharges.
