Determination of Boron Steel by Isotope-Dilution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry after Matrix Separation

  • The concentration of B in steels is important due to its influence on mechanical properties of steel such as hardenability, hot workability, and creep resistance. An analytical method has been developed to determine B in steel samples by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS). National Institute of Standard and Technology Standard Reference Material (NIST SRM) 348a was analyzed to validate the analytical method. The steel sample was digested in a centrifuge bottle with addition of aqua regia and $^{10}B$ spike isotope. Sample pH was then adjusted to higher than 10 to precipitate most matrix elements such as Fe, Cr, and Ni. After centrifugation, the supernatant solution was passed through a cation exchange column to enhance the matrix separation efficiency. B recovery efficiency was about 37%, while matrix removal efficiency was higher than 99.9% for major matrix elements. The isotope dilution method was used for quantification and the determined B concentration was in good agreement with the certified value.

Spinal Subdural Hematoma Associated with Intracranial Subdural Hematoma

  • The simultaneous occurrence of an intracranial and a spinal subdural hematoma (SDH) is rare. We describe a case of cranial SDH with a simultaneous spinal SDH. An 82-year-old woman visited the emergency room because of drowsiness and not being able to walk 6 weeks after falling down. A neurological examination showed a drowsy mentality. Brain computed tomography showed bilateral chronic SDH with an acute component. The patient underwent an emergency burr-hole trephination and hematoma removal. She exhibited good recovery after the operation. On the fourth postoperative day, she complained of low-back pain radiating to both lower limbs, and subjective weakness of the lower limbs. Spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a thoracolumbosacral SDH. A follow-up spinal magnetic resonance imaging study that was performed 16 days later showed a significant decrease in the size of the spinal SDH. We discuss the pathogenesis of this simultaneous occurrence of spinal and cranial SDH.

제지폐수 벌킹제어를 위한 미생물 적용 연구 (Studies on the Application of Microorganism to Control the Bulking of Paper Mill Wastewater)

  • The paper mill wastewater actually generating bulking was used to apply to the spot. Batch and continuous type pilots were used in this study. Optimal time after propagating generation of activated sludge in aeration basin by adding Hoc forming microorganism was 24 and 36hours while optimal time of activated sludge in original aeration basin was 60hours. Showing the difference of sedimentation velocity at 7th day after operating a pilot continuously, SV30 was decreased to 50% at 13th day. COD value in aeration basin with floe forming microorganism was 35mg/L while COD value in original aeration basin was 52mg/L. It was indicated that application of Hoc forming microorganism can control the bulking of paper mill wastewater by shortening of recovery time and improving of pollution removal efficiency.

  • In order to improve the recovery efficiency of heavy water vapour from the atmosphere inside a reactor building, and to recover and upgrade the heavy water which escape, special treatments, such as reducing the ingress of light water vapour, are studied in the design of the CANDU reactor systems. This is considered in controlled method of the humidity over drawing fresh air through a desiccant dehumidifier which dries the air by absorption. Comparing with the moisture loads between summer and winter operations, the moisture removal rates are calculated. Those are proportional to the difference between the controlled space and the surrounding environment Installation of a new dehumidifier will be able to reduce the moisture loads from the cooling systems, improving overall system efficiency and saving operating costs.

Intramedullary Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Cervicothoracic Spinal Cord

  • Solitary fibrous tumor is rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm. The spinal solitary fibrous tumor is extremely rare. The authors experienced a case of intramedullary solitary fibrous tumor of cervicothoracic spinal cord in a 48-year-old man with right lower extremity sensory disturbance. Spinal MRI showed intradural mass lesion in the level of C7-T1, the margin between the spinal cord and tumor was not clear on MRI. A Left unilateral laminectomy and mass removal was performed. Intra operative finding, the tumor boundary was unclear from spinal cord and it had intramedullary and extramedullary portion. After surgery, patient had good recovery and had uneventful prognosis. Follow up spinal MRI showed no recurrence of tumor.

Long-term Fistula Formation Due to Retained Bullet in Lumbar Spine after Gunshot Injury

  • We here report a case of long-term fistula formation due to bullet retention for 30 years in the lumbar spine after a gunshot injury, and describe its treatment. A 62-year-old male visited our hospital due to pus-like discharge from his left flank. The discharge had been present for 30 years, since his recovery from an abdominal gunshot injury. A spine radiography showed radiopaque material in the body of the third lumbar vertebra. Foreign body was removed using an anterolateral retroperitoneal approach. The postoperative course was uneventful. The patient was discharged 7 days after the operation and was followed-up for 8 months, during which time, the fistula did not reoccur. A bullet retained long term in the vertebral body may cause obstinate osteomyelitis and fistula formation. A fistula caused by a foreign body in the spine can be effectively treated by surgical removal.

  • Gas separation science and technology is among the most rapidly growing areas involving membrane-based processes. Nitrogen enrichment of air, hydrogen recovery from a broad array of stream types, and removal of acid gases from natural gases are typical of the applications in this field. Great progress has been made in the discovery of guidelines optimization of polymer structures with simultaneously high permeabilities and selectivities for these important gas pairs. The development of thin-skinned asymmetric hollow fibers have also provided structures with extremely high permeation fluxes. Especially in the case of O$_{2}$/N$_{2}$ separations, the rate of improvements in new polymeric materials for gas separations appears to be slowing to a halt. Evidence will be presented, however, that the practical tradeoff between membrane permeability and selectivity has not been reached.

흑연로 원자흡수분광광도법에 의한 뇨시료 중 흔적량 원소의 정량 (Determination of Trace Elements in Urine Samples by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry)

  • A method was described for the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometric determination of trace cadmium, copper, chromium and lead in urine samples. The elements were directly determined without any other treatments. The ash temperature was intensively optimized to improve the large background by the removal of organic materials and alkali and alkali earth metals in urine samples. Two kinds of standard solutions were used to plot calibration curves. From the recovery data, it could be confirmed that the analytical results with the synthetic urine matrix similar to real urine were more accurate than with a deionized water matrix.

Removal of Linear Alkylbenzenesulfonate by Fenton's Oxidants and Coagulation

  • 본 연구는 폐수 중 함유된 고농도의 LAS를 제거하기 위해 $FeSO_4$를 이용한 응집, 펜톤산화, 펜톤 공정 전.후에 응집공정을 조합시킨 Coagu-oxidation 및 Renton's Coagulation을 이용하여, 처리 시 최적 조건을 도출하고, 효율적인 화학적 처리방법을 검토하기 위해 수행되었다. 연구로부터 얻어진 결론은 다음과 같다. 응집공정은 pH 8, 응집제의 주입량 200mg/L인 조건에서, 펜톤산화는 pH 3, $H_2$$O_2$에 대한 ${Fe^2}^{+}$의 비가 1:1인 조건에서 최적효율을 보였다. Fenton's Coagulation 처리 시 LAS의 개환율은 높아졌고, 주입된 LAS농도의 73~96%가 제거되어 4가지 처리 방법 중 가 장 좋은 처리효율을 보였다. 따라서, LAS의 생물학적 처리 시 거품 및 부산물 생성 등에 의해 저해작용을 감안한다면, LAS가 다량으로 함유한 산업 폐수에서 화학적 처리방법의 도 입이 적절할 것으로 생각되며, 이들 중 Fenton's Coagulation을 유용하게 적용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • This paper proposes the new reclosing scheme considering the recovery time of SFCL in distribution systems which is based on variable dead time control. The main idea is that it uses the carrier signal to distinguish whether the fault is instantaneous or permanent following initial recloser opening. The system and SFCL is modeled by using Electromagnetic Transient Program(EMTP) and the validity of the reclosing scheme represented in this paper is analyzed according to the value of the fault resistance and the time of the fault removal.
