  • Multiple-count problem is occurred when rectangle objects span across several buckets. The Cumulative Density (CD) histogram is a technique which solves multiple-count problem by keeping four sub-histograms corresponding to the four points of rectangle. Although it provides exact results with constant response time, there is still a considerable issue. Since it is based on a query window which aligns with a given grid, a number of errors may be occurred when it is applied to real applications. In this paper, we proposed selectivity estimation techniques using the generalized cumulative density histogram based on two probabilistic models: (1) probabilistic model which considers the query window area ratio, (2) probabilistic model which considers intersection area between a given grid and objects. In order to evaluate the proposed methods, we experimented with real dataset and experimental results showed that the proposed technique was superior to the existing selectivity estimation techniques. The proposed techniques can be used to accurately quantify the selectivity of the spatial range query on rectangle objects.

  • A multi-stage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, has been proposed in this paper for classifying the hyperspectral data .. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The 'local' segmentor of the first stage performs region-growing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. The 'global' segmentor of the second stage, which has not spatial constraints for merging, clusters the segments resulting from the previous stage, using a context-free similarity measure. This study applied the multistage hierarchical clustering method to the data generated by band reduction, band selection and data compression. The classification results were compared with them using full bands.

  • A multistage hierarchical clustering technique, which is an unsupervised technique, was suggested in this paper for classifying large remotely-sensed imagery. The multistage algorithm consists of two stages. The local segmentor of the first stage performs regiongrowing segmentation by employing the hierarchical clustering procedure of CN-chain with the restriction that pixels in a cluster must be spatially contiguous. This stage uses a sliding window strategy with boundary blocking to alleviate a computational problem in computer memory for an enormous data. The global segmentor of the second stage has not spatial constraints for merging to classify the segments resulting from the previous stage. The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study efficiently performs the segmentation for the images of very large size and an extensive number of bands

  • In this study, Ichon basin is selected as study area and regional analysis of geological structure are done by using lineament analysis. The factors which affects slope stability, are chosen, and integrated to database using GIS (Geoscientific Information System). Landsat TM band 4, 5 and 7 are choosen and processed by various image enhancement technique to analyse the regional geological lineaments. Spatial distribution of lineament is analysed through lineament density map and study area can be divided the eight structural domains. Considering environmental geological characteristics of study area, rating and weighting of each factors for slope stability analysis are determined and spatial analysis of regional slope stability is examined through overlaying technique of GIS. The result of areal distribution of slope stability shows that the most unstable area is all over Mt. Buksung, Mt. Daepo, Mt. Songrim and Mt. Yankak.

  • 4S-Van is being developed in order to provide the spatial data rapidly and accurately. 4S-Van technique is a system for spatial data construction that is heart of 4S technique. Architecture of 4S-Van system consists of hardware integration part and post-processing part. Hardware part has GPS, INS, color CCD, camera, B/W CCD camera, infrared rays camera, and laser. Software part has GPS/INS integration algorithm, coordinate conversion, lens correction, camera orientation correction, and three dimension position production. In this paper, we suggest that adequate 4S-Van design is needed according to application environment from various test results.

  • Thermal infrared imaging is a highly promising technology for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of electronic, electrical and mechanical elements in nuclear power plants. However, conventional low-cost infrared imaging systems suffer from poor spatial resolution compared to commercial CCD cameras. This paper describes an approach to enhance inspection performances for calandria reactor area of Wolsung nuclear power plant through the technique of superimposing thermal infrared image into real CCD image. In the occurrence of thermal abnormalities on observation points and areas of calandria reactor area, unusual hot image taken from thermal infrared camera is mapped upon real CCD image. The performance of the technique has been evaluated in the experiment carried out at Wolsung nuclear power plant in the overhaul period. The results show that localizations of thermal abnormalities on calandria reactor face can be estimated accurately.

  • Among effective feature extraction methods from the small-patched image set, independent component analysis (ICA) is recently well known stochastic manner to find informative basis images. The ICA simultaneously learns both basis images and independent components using high order statistic manners, because that information underlying between pixels are sensitive to high-order statistic models. The topographic ICA model is adapted in our experiment. This paper deals with an unsupervised classification strategies using learned ICA basis images. The experimental result by proposed classification technique shows superior performance than classic texture analysis techniques for the panchromatic KOMPSAT imagery.

  • This contribution reports on the potential of L-band Permanent Scatterer technique for the detection and monitoring of ground subsidence. We present the use of PS in the abandoned mining area, Korea. Discrete and temporarily stable natural reflectors or permanent scatterers (PS) can be identified from long temporal series of interferometric SAR images. This subset of image pixels can be exploited successfully for high accuracy differential measurements (Ferretti et al., 2000).

  • The EO-1 spacecraft, launched November 21, 2000 into a sun synchronous orbit behind Landsat 7, hosts advanced technology demonstration instruments, whose capabilities are currently being assessed by the user community for future missions. A significant part of the EO-1 program is to perform data comparisons between Hyperion, ALI and Landsat 7 ETM+. In this paper, a comparison of forest classification results from Hyperion, ALI, and the ETM+ of Landsat-7 are provided for Wangqing Forest Bureau, Jilin Province, Northeast China. The data have been radiometrically corrected and geometrically resampled. Feature selection and statistical transforms are used to reduce the Hyperion feature space from 86 channels to 14 features. Classes chosen for discrimination included Larch, Spruce, Oak, Birch, Popular and Mixed forest and other landuses. Classification accuracies have been obtained for each sensor. Comparison of the classification results shows : Hyperion classification results were the best, ALI's were much better than ETM+.

  • Large number of coral reefs in Thailand waters make the use of satellite imagery probably the only practical method for their monitoring. This paper reports the result of detecting small shallow-water coral reef by using maximum likelihood classification technique. Combination of blue/green and near-infrared band ratio are used as spectral signatures derived from a Landsat 7 imagery covering western portion of the Gulf of Thailand. Result assessment reveals accuracy significantly over 60 percent. The result is encouraging and would be a basis for further study to realize the full potential and limitation of this technique.
