  • There is an increasing interest in condition-based maintenance for the prevention of economic loss due to failure. Moreover, immense research is being carried out in related technologies in the field of construction machinery. In particular, data-based failure diagnosis methods that employ AI (machine & deep learning) algorithms are in the spotlight. In this study, we have focused on the failure diagnosis and mode classification of reduction gear of excavator's travel device by using the AI algorithm. In addition, a remote monitoring system has been developed that can monitor the status of the reduction gear by using the developed diagnosis algorithm. The failure diagnosis algorithm was performed in the process of data acquisition of normal and abnormal under various operating conditions, data processing and analysis by the wavelet transformation, and learning. The developed algorithm was verified based on three-evaluation conditions. Finally, we have built a system that can check the status of the reduction gear of travel devices on the web using the Edge platform, which is embedded with the failure diagnosis algorithm and cloud.

  • The Amazon River basin is one of the largest basins in the world, and its ecosystem is vital for biodiversity, hydrology, and climate regulation. Thus, understanding the hydrometeorological process is essential to the maintenance of the Amazon River basin. However, it is still tricky to monitor the Amazon River basin because of its size and the low density of the monitoring gauge network. To solve those issues, remote sensing products have been largely used. Yet, those products have some limitations. Therefore, this study aims to do bias corrections to improve the accuracy of Satellite Precipitation Products (SPPs) in the Amazon River basin. We use 331 rainfall stations for the observed data and two daily satellite precipitation gridded datasets (CHIRPS, TRMM). Due to the limitation of the observed data, the period of analysis was set from 1st January 1990 to 31st December 2010. The observed data were interpolated to have the same resolution as the SPPs data using the IDW method. For bias correction, we use convolution neural networks (CNN) combined with an autoencoder architecture (ConvAE). To evaluate the bias correction performance, we used some statistical indicators such as NSE, RMSE, and MAD. Hence, those results can increase the quality of precipitation data in the Amazon River basin, improving its monitoring and management.

  • Sensor networks are now an essential aspect of wireless communication, especially with the introduction of new gadgets and protocols. Their ability to be deployed anywhere, especially where human presence is undesirable, makes them perfect choices for remote observation and control. Despite their vast range of applications from home to hostile territory monitoring, limited battery power remains a limiting factor in their efficacy. To analyze and transmit data, it requires intelligent use of available battery power. Several studies have established effective routing algorithms based on clustering. However, choosing optimal cluster heads and similarity measures for clustering significantly increases computing time and cost. This work proposes and implements a simple two-phase technique of route creation and maintenance to ensure route reliability by employing nature-inspired ant colony optimization followed by the fuzzy decision engine (FDE). Benchmark methods such as PSO, ACO and GWO are compared with the proposed HRCM's performance. The objective has been focused towards establishing the superiority of proposed work amongst existing optimization methods in a standalone configuration. An average of 15% improvement in energy consumption followed by 12% improvement in latency reduction is observed in proposed hybrid model over standalone optimization methods.

  • Robotics applications are greatly needed in hazardous locations, e.g., fusion and fission reactors, where robots must perform delicate and complex tasks under ionizing radiation conditions. The drawback is that some robotic parts, such as active electronics, are susceptible to radiation. It can lead to unexpected failures and early termination of the robotic operation. This paper analyses the ionizing radiation effect from 0.09 to 1.5 Gy/s in robotic components (microcontrollers, servo motors and temperature sensors). The first experiment compares the performance of various microcontroller types and their actuators and sensors, where different mitigation strategies are applied, such as using Radiation-Hardened (Rad-Hard) microcontrollers or shielding. The second and third experiments analyze the performance of a 3-Degrees of Freedom (DoF) robotic arm, evaluating its components' responses and trajectory. This study enhances our understanding and expands our knowledge regarding radiation's impact on robotic arms and components, which is useful for defining the best strategies for extending the robots' operational lifespan, especially when performing maintenance or inspection tasks in radiation environments.

  • Wave observation is widely used to direct observation method for observing the water surface elevation using wave buoy or pressure gauge and remote-sensing wave observation method. The wave buoy and pressure gauge can produce high-quality wave data but have disadvantages of the high risk of damage and loss of the instrument, and high maintenance cost in the offshore area. On the other hand, remote observation method such as radar is easy to maintain by installing the equipment on the land, but the accuracy is somewhat lower than the direct observation method. This study investigates the data quality of MIROS Wave and Current Radar (MWR) installed at Dokdo and improve the data quality of remote wave observation data using the wave buoy (CWB) observation data operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. We applied and developed the three types of wave data quality control; 1) the combined use (Optimal Filter) of the filter designed by MIROS (Reduce Noise Frequency, Phillips Check, Energy Level Check), 2) Spike Test Algorithm (Spike Test) developed by OOI (Ocean Observatories Initiative) and 3) a new filter (H-Ts QC) using the significant wave height-period relationship. As a result, the wave observation data of MWR using three quality control have some reliability about the significant wave height. On the other hand, there are still some errors in the significant wave period, so improvements are required. Also, since the wave observation data of MWR is different somewhat from the CWB data in high waves of over 3 m, further research such as collection and analysis of long-term remote wave observation data and filter development is necessary.

  • A river water level monitoring system which prevents salt water damages and effectively excludes floods has been developed to contribute efficient operation of Nakdong river estuary barrage. The system can be used for monitoring upstream conditions more quickly and do appropriate responses over changes. Telemetry and telecontrols using PLCs have been built at the three sites that directly influence on the operation of barrage gates, and are linked to Nakdong river estuary barrage's IOS (Integrated Operation System) through public communication networks. By using PLC, the system can achieve even higher reliability and versatility than before as well as easy management. By power control devices, we can remotely control the power of PLCs to treat the minor troubles instantly without going on-sites. The power control devices also save data in preparation for the cases of communication failures. The system uses ADSL (FTTH) as a main network between SCADA server and PLCs, and CDMA (M2M) as a secondary network. In order to compensate security vulnerabilities of public communication network, we have installed the VPNs for secure communication between center and the observation stations, just like a dedicated network. Generally, river water level observations have been used custom-manufactured remote terminals to suit their special goals. However, in this case, we have established a system with open architecture considering the interface between different systems, the ease of use and maintenance, security, price, etc.

  • This paper suggests a system architecture for the advanced meteorological satellite image processing system that is developing by NMSC(National Meteorological Satellite Center). The meteorology satellite image processing system has basically the image acquisition, the image processing, the data management, and the data dissemination functionalities. However, the existing system has some problems with respect to system integration as well as maintenance to accommodate new satellites and/or the new image processing systems for them which will be developed in the near future. To cope with these problems we propose a new system architecture for the advanced meteorology satellite image processing system. To do this we select as the architectural drivers the quality attributes such as modifiability, inter-operability, extendability, reusability, and platform independency and design the architecture to achieve such quality attributes. We expect that the new approach will solve current issues such as system integration, system dependency, or data management problems and will provide easy ways to incorporate new systems and to maintain them.

  • The purpose of this study is an analysis of the risk of soil erosion before and after the maintenance of riparian area using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model based on GIS and digitizing data. To analysis of soil erosion loss in the study area, land cover maps, topographical maps, soil maps, precipitation and other data were used. After digitizing the riparian area of the Geumhogang, the area is divided into administrative district units, respectively. Amount of soil loss was classified into 5 class according to the degree of loss. Totally, 1 and 5 class were decreased, and 2-4 class were increased. Daegu and Yeongcheon decreased the area of 5 class, and Gyeongsan did not have area of 5 class. The reason for this is thought to be the decrease of the 5 class area due to the park construction, expansion of artificial facilities, and reduction of agricultural land. Simplification of riverside for river dredging and park construction has increased the flow rate of the riverside and it is considered that the amount of soil erosion has increased.
