The Earth observation imagery from satellite provide valuable informations for the central government, local governments and diverse public organizations. The analysis of applications and data, which are sold by commercial distributors of Earth observation satellite data, shows this phenomenon clearly. The Government of Republic of Korea established and carried out a national space development plan to meet the national needs for remotely sensed imagery. After this national space development plan and on behalf of Korean government KARI has developed and launched successfully the KOMPSAT-1 and operates it up to now. KARI is now to launch by the end of year 2005 another optical remote sensing satellite with very high resolution and named as KOMPSAT-2. For the application of such very high resolution remotely sensed data the product validation should be done carefully and this product validation require lots of ancillary data such as in-situ measurements. For the purpose of diverse ancillary data acquisition joint work with other nations, related institutes and international bodies is essential. In this paper the status of Korean European Cooperations will be introduced, which are derived by KARI, ARCS and ESA for the wide use of KOMPSAT data in Europe.

Helix antennas have been widely applied to satellite TT&C, data communication and GPS receiver systems onboard military, remote sensing and communication purpose satellites. The helix antennas are known to be convenient to control impedance and radiation coverage characteristics with a maximum directivity in satellite z-axis. Waveguide horn is commonly used for radar system that needs ultra-wideband pulse for exploration ground radar and electromagnetic disability measurement etc. It has high efficiency and low reflection characteristics provided by the low-profile shape and suppressed radiation distortion. In this paper, a waveguide horn structure incorporated with helix antenna design is proposed for satellite applications that require ultra-wideband pulse radar and high rate RF data communication link to ground station over wide coverage area. The main design concern is to synthesize variable beam forming pattern based on modified horn-helix combination helicone structure such that multi-mission antenna is implemented applicable for TT&C, earth observation, high data rate transmission. Waveguide horn helps to reduce the overall antenna structure size by introduction fold type reflector connected to the tapered helix antenna. The next generation KOMPSAT satellite currently under development requires high-performance precision attitude control system. We present an initial design of a hybrid hern-helix antenna structure suitable for efficient RF communication module design of multi-purpose satellite systems.

Landsat OLI satellite imagery can be applied to various remote sensing applications, such as generation of land cover map, urban area analysis, extraction of vegetation index and change detection, because it includes various multispectral bands. In addition, land cover map is an important information to monitor and analyze land cover using GIS. In this paper, land cover map is generated by using Landsat OLI and existing land cover map. First, training dataset is obtained using correlation between existing land cover map and unsupervised classification result by K-means, automatically. And then, spectral signatures corresponding to each class are determined based on training data. Finally, abundance map and land cover map are generated by using iterative spectral mixture model. The experiment is accomplished by Landsat OLI of Cheongju area. It shows that result by our method can produce land cover map without manual training dataset, compared to existing land cover map and result by supervised classification result by SVM, quantitatively and visually.

The rapid growth of IoT technology induced by the fourth industrial revolution has resulted in research into various types of wireless sensors, and applications based on this technology are prevalent in many areas. However, among the various sites where this technology is used, railway bridges and tunnels with lengths of tens of kilometers have problems with data acquisition, due to the signal noise induced by the long distance measurement and EMI induced by the high voltage power feeding system, when conventional electric sensors are used. To overcome these problems, many studies on fiber optic sensors have been conducted as a substitute for the conventional electric sensors. However, restrictions on the types of fiber optic sensors have limited their application in railways. For this reason, a hybrid measurement system with IoT based wireless data communication, in which both electric and fiber optic sensors can be applied simultaneously, has been developed. In this study, in order to evaluate the applicability of the hybrid measurement system developed in the previous study, a real-time test for 4 types of measurement environments, which reflect possible railway sites, is performed. As a result, it was confirmed that the signals from both the electric and fiber optic sensors, which were acquired at a remote area in real-time, showed good agreement with each other and that this measurement system has the potential to handle sensors with a sampling rate of 2.5 kHz. In the future, it is expected that the IoT-based hybrid measurement system will contribute to the improvement of structural safety by enabling real-time structural health monitoring when applied to various measurement sites.
On the moon as well as the earth, one of the easiest ways to understand geological formation history of any region is to observe the stratigraphy if it is available, the order in which the strata build up. By analyzing stratigraphy, it is possible to infer what geological events have occurred in the past. Mare Nubium also has an unique normal fault called Rupes Recta that shows stratigraphy. However, a rover moving with wheels is incompetent to explore the cliff since the Rupes Recta has an inclination of 10° - 30°. Therefore, a quadruped walking robot must be employed for stable expedition. To exploration a fault with a four-legged walking robot, it is necessary to design an expedition route by taking account of whether the stratigraphy is well displayed, whether the slope of the terrain is moderate, and whether there are obstacles and rough texture in the terrain based on the remote sensing data from the previous lunar missions. For the payloads required for fault surface exploration we propose an optical camera to grasp the actual appearance, a spectrometer to analyze the composition, and a drill to obtain samples that are not exposed outward.
SAR has provided weather independent images on land and sea surface, which can be used for extracting various useful informations. Recently attempts to estimate wind field parameters from SAR images over the oceans have been made by various groups over the world. Although scatterometer loaded in ERS-1 and ERS-2 observes the global wind vector field at spatial resolution of 50 Km with accuracies of $\pm$2m/s in speed, the spatial resolution may not be good enough for applications in coastal regions. It is weil known the sea surface roughness is closely correlated to the wind field, but the wind retrieval algorithms from SAR images are yet in developing stage. Since the radar backscattering properties of the SAR images are principally the same as that of scatterometer, some previous studies conducted by other groups report the success in mesoscale coastal wind field retrievals using ERS SAR images. We have tested SWA (SAR Wind Algorithm) and CMOD4 model for estimation of wind speed using an ERS-1 SAR image acquired near Cheju Island, Korea, in October 11, 1994. The precise estimation of sigma nought and the direction of wind are required for applying the CMOD4 model to estimate wind speed. The wind speed in the test sub-image is estimated to be about 10.5m/s, which relatively well agrees to the observed wind speed about 9.0m/s at Seoguipo station. The wind speed estimation through the SWA is slightly higher than that of CMOD4 model. The sea surface condition may be favorable to SWA on the specific date. Since the CMOD4 model requires either wind direction or wind speed to retrieve the wind field, we should estimate the wind speed first using other algorithm including SWA. So far, it is not conclusive if the SWA can be used to provide input wind speed data for CMOD4 model or not. Since it is only initial stage of implementing the wind field retrieval algorithms and no in-situ observed data is currently avaliable, we are not able to evaluate the accuracy of the results at the moment. Therefore verification studies should be followed in the future to extract reliable wind field information in the coastal region using ERS SAR images.
GIS has been regarded as one of important tools or methodologies for various geoscience applications. Recently, spatial data integration schemes for site-specific or field-specific thematic mapping are newly developed and utilized. However, these kinds of approaches are somewhat insufficient quantitative assessment of integrated layers towards known targets in-detailed . Moreover, GIS analysis scheme is rarely extended to scientific approaches. In this study, simple approach of Multi-Buffer Zone Analysis , related to GIS analystical aspect, is addressed and an actual application for predicting or favorable mapping of mineral occurrences, one of GIS-based geoscientific approaches, is performed, As for geo-processing in GIS itself, this scheme can be regarded as extension or adaptiation of cell-based buffering or proximity analysis to geoscientific data interpretation. This study is based on rationale that surface geological pattern around primitives such as a point, a line, or a polygon in GIS, representing significant geological features, can be efficiently utilized to delineate complex geological behaviors or events, especially handling multiple dta sets originated from multiple sources such as airborne geophysical/radiometric exploration, field survey, and even a classified image of remote sensing. Conclusively, this methodology associated wit GIS is though to be helpful to analyze the spatial pattern of multiple data, pointing given sources, and is expected to effectively utilize for exploratory analysis of cell-based resultant layer integrated with complex or different data sources.
Choropleth mapping of population distribution is based on the assumption that people are uniformly distributed throughout each enumeration unit. Dasymetric mapping technique improves choropleth mapping by refining spatially aggregated data with residential information. Further, pycnophylactic interpolation can upgrade dasymetric mapping by considering population distribution of neighboring areas, while preserving the volumes of original units. This study proposed a combined solution of dasymetric mapping and pycnophylactic interpolation to improve the accuracy of population density distribution. Specifically, the dasymetric method accounts for the spatial distribution of population within each census unit, while pycnophylactic interpolation considers population distribution of neighboring area. This technique is demonstrated with 1990 census data of the Athens, GA. with land use land cover information derived from remotely-sensed imagery for the areal extent of populated areas. The results are evaluated by comparison between original population counts of smaller census units (census block groups) and population counts of the grid map built from larger units (census tracts) aggregated to the same areal units. The estimated populations indicate a satisfactory level of accuracy. Population distribution acquired by the suggested method can be re-aggregated to any type of geographic boundaries such as electoral boundaries, school districts, and even watershed for a variety of applications.

There is a growing demand for agrometeorological information that end-users can use and not just interesting information. lo achieve this, each region/community needs to develop and provide localized climate and weather information for growers. Additionally, provide tools to help local users interpret climate forecasts issued by the National Weather Service in the country. Real time information should be provided for farmers, including some basic data. An ideal agrometeorological information system includes several components: an efficient data measuring and collection system; a modern telecommunication system; a standard data management processing and analysis system; and an advanced technological information dissemination system. While it is conventional wisdom that, Internet is and will play a major role in the delivery and dissemination of agrometeorological information, there are large gaps between the "information rich" and the "information poor" countries. Rural communities represent the "last mile of connectivity". For some time to come, TV broadcast, radio, phone, newspaper and fax will be used in many countries for communication. The differences in achieving this among countries arise from the human and financial resources available to implement this information and the methods of information dissemination. These differences must be considered in designing any information dissemination system. Experience shows that easy across to information more tailored to user needs would substantially increase use of climate information. Opportunities remain unexplored for applications of geographical information systems and remote sensing in agro meteorology.e sensing in agro meteorology.
