  • Real time monitoring has become critical as the use of laser welding increases. Plasma and spatter are measured and used as the signal for estimating weld quality. The estimating algorithm was made using the fuzzy pattern recognition with the area of data that is beyond the tolerance boundary. Also, an algorithm that detects the spatter and the localized defect was created in order to kd the partially produced pit and the sudden loss of weld penetration. These algorithms were used in quality monitoring of the $CO_2$ laser tailored blank weld. Statistical program that can display the laser weld quality result and the signal transition was made for the first stage of the remote control system.

  • The basic remote sleeve repair-welding technology by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser for increasing the lifetime of the steam generator tube in a nuclear power plant has been developed. The relationship between the connection width and welding parameters have been investigated for the fundamental research to apply the sleeve-repair-welding technique to the nuclear industry. The Inconel 600 tube and Inconel 690 sleeve used for high temperature and high pressure service were welded as round lap welding by Nd:YAG laser. It was observed that the tensile shear strength, 340MPa of the welded specimen is equivalent to about 60% of that of the base metal (Inconel 600), 550MPa. The difference between the hardness of the base metal and that of the laser welds was about 10%. Ductile fracture was partly occurred in the weld but the cracking has not been observed. In spite of absence of the crack, the strength of welds was not sufficient in terms of the tensile shear strength.

  • This study is to develop the resistance welding apparatus and investigate the welding characteristics of Zircaloy-4 end-plate of fuel bundle in the cases of the resistance welding and the laser beam welding. The welding parameters which affect the weld nugget and the torque values have been also compared. The effect of the torque strength of end-plate welding using by the resistance welding and the laser beam welding has been studied and optimum conditions of Zircaloy-4 end-plate welding have been found. Futhermore, micro-structures and micro-hardness of the resistance welded specimens have been also compared.

  • The remote sleeve repair-welding technology using the pulsed Nd:YAG laser for increasing the lifetime of the steam generator tube in the nuclear power plant has been developed. The laser welding has many advantages on deep penetration depth and narrow heat affect zone(HAZ). The inconel 600 tube and inconel 690 sleeve used high temperature and high pressure service have been welded as round lap welds. It is found that the relation between the connection width and welding parameters. It is found that the shear strength in proportion to the connection width by conducting tensile-shear tests.

  • Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.

  • Advances in laser technology have yielded a multitude of innovative processes and applications in various industries. Laser peening is a typical example invented in the mid-1990s as a surface technology, which converted residual stress from tension to compression by just irradiating successive laser pulses to metallic materials under aqueous environment without any surface preparation. The effects of laser peening have been experimentally studied on residual stress, stress corrosion cracking(SCC) susceptibility and fatigue properties with water-penetrable frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. In addition, laser peening has been widely used in aviation and aerospace industries, automobile manufacturing and nuclear plant. One of the most important causes to improve the above-mentioned properties is the deeper compressive residual stress induced by laser peening. Taking advantage of the process without reacting force against laser irradiation, a remote operating system was developed to apply laser peening to nuclear power reactors as a preventive maintenance measure against SCC.
