  • The rapid growth of IT technology has enabled ship automation systems to gain better functionality and safety with reduced costs and crew numbers. Nowadays, the remote maintenance services for the systems are required because a ship may be located in a very remote area. To provide the remote maintenance services, some issues such as how to collect the ship automation systems data, how to monitor a ship's data from onshore offices, how to get support from experts while sailing, and how to reduce the maintenance costs, should be addressed. In this paper, we propose a remote ship maintenance system for remote monitoring and diagnostics of ship automation systems, which is based on both a ship area network to integrate separate system networks and a ship-shore communication infrastructure to support a remote access using satellite communications. Finally, we present the function test to verify the applicability of the proposed system.

  • Environmental Impact Assesment(EIA) is composed of various procedures, such as screening, scoping, inventory survey, prediction, assessment, mitigation measure, alternative assessment, and post management. Remote sensing introduced lately begins to be applied ecosystem and land use in inventory survey and assessment of EIA. This study explains on land use classification, buffering analysis of residential area, and overlaying analysis of odor predictive data with residential area for application to EIA with remote sensing data. Residential area extracted from land use classification of remote sensing provides effectively buffering analysis of residential area in selection of landfill site with GIS. It could assess also residential effect to an offensive odor by overlaying analysis. Application methods in EIA should be enlarged to assess effectively.

  • In this article, a new remote sensing image fusion model based on modified Kohonen networks is given. And a new fusion rule based on modified voting rule was established. Select Shaoxing City as the study site, located at Zhejiang Province, P.R.China. The fusion experiment between Landsat TM data (30m) and IRS-C Pan data (5.8m) was performed using the given fusion method. The fusion results show that the new method can gain better result in apply ing to the lower hill area, and the whole classification accuracy was 10% higher than the basic Kohonen method. The confusion between the woodlands and the waterbodies was also diminished.

  • Remote sensing becomes a new and core framework for the atmospheric sciences and closely related areas concerning with the ever-changing global environmental status. However, remote sensing in the Korea Meteorological Society is relatively new, where the first relevant paper is appeared in 1983, as well as is an area with relatively limited number of research groups. Here, we review and summarize some of the key progress in this area within Korea Meteorological Society focusing on the areas of satellite, radar, and ground based remote sensing such as lidar, spectrometer and sun photometer. Overall, the area is shown to have the most significant progress occur along with the acquisition of the key infra structures such as the COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) and S-band radar system led by Korea Meteorological Administration in early 2000. After that, the area has quickly developed into a status playing important roles to lead and support the overall activities in the atmospheric measurements. It is expected that the importance and role of the remote sensing will increase in the coming years.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the telemedicine cooperation experience of nurses working in remote areas. Methods: A focus group interviews were used to collect data. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: The three main categories and seven sub-categories of telemedicine cooperation experience that emerged are 1) requirement of education on remote support service, 2) consideration of the recipients of medical support services and the characteristics of the area, and 3) difficulties in conducting telemedicine cooperation. Conclusion: As a result of the study, legal protection should be given priority, and it is necessary to select an area where remote cooperation is essential, to discover subjects, and to reduce the burden of work and division of manpower and duties.

  • The electric wave propagation characteristics of electromagnetic field by induction current shows a nonlinear distinction in the metal but linear on air. This paper is written about the magnetic transmission distinction in the metalic tube, which wrapped the center axis by the same direction. The electromagnetic field made by the transmission signal is transferred from the transmission coil area toward the receiving coil by the magnetic diffusion. So, it is different magnetic flux around the coil with one in the remote field area. Analyzing such a complex magnetic characteristic, we verified this theory by the vector analysis and presented eddy current mechanism and analytical model about magnetic distribution in the remote field area. This magnetic distribution rate in metal body will be very useful in the nondestructive inspection of the eddy current in remote field which is recently rising as a new technology.

  • Three periods of land-use maps of the Suomo Basin were drawn from topographic maps (1970a) and Landsat TM/ETM images (1986a and 1999a). The area of each kind of land use was calculated from the three maps. From 1970 to 1999, the area of forestland decreased 17%, the area of sparse forestland increased 8%, and the area of grassland increased 10%. The transferring trend of the land-use is that forestland turned into sparse forestland and brush land, and the brush land degenerated into grassland based on the transferring matrixes from 1970 to 1986, and from 1986 to 1999. According to the local government record and statistical data, forest cover rate had been increasing from 1970 to 1998, but the amount of growing stock had been declining. From 1957 to 1998, the amount of growing stock declined from 423m$^3$/ha to 177m$^3$/ha.

  • A study was made on the feature extraction for non-metallic one deposits and their related geology using the Remote Sensing and Airborne Radiometric data. The area chosen is around the Haenam area, where dickite and Quarzite mines are distributed in. The geology of the area consists mainly of Cretaceous volcanics and PreCambrian metamorphic. The methods applied are study on the reflectance characteristics of minerals and rocks sampled in the study area, and the feature extraction extraction of histogram normalized images for Landsat TM and Airborne Radiometric data, and finally evaluation of applicability of some useful pattern recognition techniques for regional lithological mapping. As a result, reflectances of non-metallic minerals are much higher than rock samples in the area. However, low grade dickites are slightly higher than rock samples, probably due to their greyish colour and also their textural features which may scatter the reflectance and may be capable of capturing much hychoryl ions. The reflectances of rock samples may depend on the degree of whiteness of samples. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histogram normalized image of TM Band 1, 2 and 3, due to their high reflectivity. The Masking technique using the above bands may be the most effective and the natural colour composite may provide some success as well. The colour composite image of PCA may also be effective in extracting geological features, and airborne radiometric data may be useful to some degree as an complementary tool.

  • Analysis of UHI in Busan region using Landsat TM data. Between 1987 and 1997 surface temperature increased clearly. Land usage of Busan is construed that instigate UHI changing into industry and commerce area. Also, intensity of UHI in surface temperature appeared strongly in industrial area and business area. On the contrary, residential area, mountain area, suburb area did not appear strongly.

  • This study was carried out in part of Tamil Nadu, India. Also, Landsat ETM+ image and field sampling data were acquired. The field data were basal area, number of trees and number of species. Using the data set, this study performed a three steps processing, (1) Image classification (2) extracting the vegetation indices(NDVI, Tasseled cap brightness, greenness and wetness) (3) mapping the prediction of biodiversity distribution using basal area and NDVI image value. Basal area was significantly correlated with NDVI. The result of classification showed 69% overall accuracy.
