Stress History of a Bridge Estimated from Statistical Analysis of Traffic Bow (교통류의 통계적 해석으로부터 추정한 교량의 응력이력)

  • The stress history of a bridge is different depending on the characteristic of traffic flow. Because the flow is varied with vehicle type, weight and headway time etc., statistical analysis in bridges is necessary to estimate the history by traffic flow. By applying the statistical analyses in fracture mechanics, the remaining service life of the structure can be estimated. In this paper, 1)the statistical analysis of vehicle type, weight and headway time etc. to analysis randomness of traffic flow, 2)measuring and analysis of stress history of a real bridge, 3)reappearance of stress history by Monte-Carlo Simulation using constitution ratio of vehicle type, weight and headway time as probabilitic variable, 4)comparision of the calculated and modelled stress history, 5)calculation of reduction factor, 6)comparision of frequency of stress range depending on span length etc. were performed. From the results, the basic modelled stress history which is necessary for the method of estimation of the remaining service life of the structure could be suggested.

  • In the point of view of a train operator, the main concern with a train operation is not only to maintain a time schedule, but also to decrease the energy consumption as much as possible. Generally for a manual drive, a train conductor controls the train acceleration and deceleration by controlling the notches not to exceed the regulation velocity by considering the given maximum velocity profile for an operation route. For this case, the guideline for a conductor is needed to choose the proper notches by applying the notch optimization so as to drive at the regulation velocity and minimize energy consumption simultaneously. In this paper, the real-time notch optimization plan is suggested using a genetic algorithm that optimizes the notches for the remaining route in real time when the event occurs that track information or regulation velocity profile of the remaining route changes during train operation as well as a normal operation situation. An energy saving effect and the convergence behavior of the optimal solution obtained was analyzed in a genetic algorithm.

A Study of Improvement of Urban Pavement Maintenance Technique based on Pavement Condition Evaluation and FWD Data (도로포장 표면조사와 FWD정보에 기반한 도심지 도로포장 유지보수 기법 개선방안 연구)

  • The objective of this paper is to support accurate pavement condition assessment and decision of proper maintenance method and time by conducting visual inspection and calculating the remaining life of pavement from falling weight deflectometer(FWD) data. Each was implemented in the same long-term performance pavement(LTPP) sections. Visual inspection was executed to measure pavement condition indices such as crack, rutting and international roughness index(IRI) and the Seoul Pavement Index(SPI) was calculated based on these results. The dynamic modulus was back-calculated from the FWD data. The remaining pavement lives were determined from equivalent single axle loading(ESAL) and FWD data. Correlation of maintenance priority by each result value was examined. Consequently, the correlation between remaining life to Crack and Rutting was higher than the other factors or indicesbecause IRI is not related to FWD value and SPI value consists with IRI value and other indices. The R-square value of correlation of FWD with Crack and Rutting was 0.65, which indicated an insufficient correlation. Consequently, when decision of maintenance of method, time, etc. is determined, FWD data have to be considered with Crack and Rutting because of those relations.

Prediction Model of Remaining Service Life of Concrete for Irrigation Structures by Measuring Carbonation (중성화 측정을 통한 콘크리트의 잔존수명 예측 모델)

  • Recently, the researches on the durability design of concrete structures have been studied. As the examples, models to evaluate the service life prediction of the structure have been developed. The purpose of this article is to develop the model for predicting remaining service life. The final aim is to provide the user time for repairing the concrete structures. In addition, it makes possible to maintain the concrete structure economically. 70 reservoirs out of the inland concrete structures were selected and concrete structures of their components were surveyed. Two methods were used for measuring carbonation; TG/DTA method and Phenolphtalein indicator and, the value of pH was measured by the pH meter, After deriving correlations of calcium carbonate and used year, duration from completion year to 2002, pH value, and concrete cover depth the model was developed for predicting remaining service life by measuring data as small as possible. The conventional models had been developed on the basis of experiment data obtained from the restricted lab environment like as carbon gas exposure. On the other hand this model was developed on the basis of measuring data obtained from the real field that the complex deterioration actions are occurred such as freezing and thawing, carbonation, steel corrosion, and so on. The reliability of the developed model will be evaluated high in this point and this model can help to maintain concrete structures economically by providing the manager time to repair the deteriorated concrete structures in site of facility management.

Contamination of Chinese Cabbage with $^{85}Sr$, $^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$ Related to Time of Foliar Application ($^{85}Sr$, $^{103}Ru$, $^{134}Cs$의 엽면처리 시기에 따른 배추의 방사능 오염)

  • A solution containing $^{85}Sr$, $^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$ was applied to Chinese cabbage in a greenhouse via foliar spraying at 5 different times during its growth. Interception of the applied activity by plant showed no difference among radionuclides and increased with decreasing time interval between application and harvest. The maximum interception factor observed was 0.87. Percentages of the intercepted activity remaining in the whole leaves at harvest varied $16{\sim}58%$ for $^{85}Sr$, $15{\sim}73%$ for $^{103}Ru$ and $33{\sim}64%$ for $^{134}Cs$, with application time and those for the inner leaves (without 6 outmost leaves) varied $2{\sim}35%$, $0.4{\sim}46%$ and $14{\sim}40%$, respectively. It was demonstrated that rain plays an important role in weathering loss of the activity. Tying the upper end of the plant prior to the last application lowered interception and remaining activity in the inner leaves by factors of $3{\sim}4$. Present results can be referred to in predicting the radionuclide concentration in Chinese cabbage and deciding counter-measures at the time of an accidental release from the nuclear installation.

  • Mathematical programming method for finding optimal solution of job shop scheduling is inadequate to real situation because fo too much computation time. In contrast, dispatching rule is helpful for reducing compuation time but is not guaranted to find optimal solution. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new dispatching rule and procedure to minimize mean flow time whose result is near the optimal solution for job shop scheduling. First step is to select machine which have shortest finishing operation time among the schedulable operations. Second step is to select operation with regard to estimated remaining operation time. The suggested rule is compared with nondelay and MWKR rule for three examples, and is confirmed to be most effective to minimize mean flow time.

Buckling capacity of uniformly corroded steel members in terms of exposure time

  • Most of steel structures in various industries are subjected to corrosion due to environmental exposure. Corrosion damage is a serious problem for these structures which may reduce their carrying capacity. These aging structures require maintenance and in many cases, replacement. The goal of this research is to consider the effects of corrosion by developing a model that estimates corrosion loss as a function of exposure time. The model is formulated based on average measured thickness data collected from three severely corroded I-beams (nearly 30 years old). Since corrosion is a time-dependent parameter. Analyses were performed to calculate the lateral buckling capacity of steel beam in terms of exposure time. Minimum curves have been developed for assessment of the remaining lateral buckling capacity of ordinary I-beams based on the loss of thicknesses in terms of exposure time. These minimum curves can be used by practicing engineers for better estimates on the service life of corrosion damaged steel beams.

Comparison of Detection Probability for Conventional and Time-Reversal (TR) Radar Systems

  • We compare the detection probabilities of the time-reversal(TR) detection system and the conventional radar system. The target is assumed to be hidden inside a random medium such as a forest. We propose a TR detection system based on the SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) algorithm. Unlike the conventional SAR images, the proposed TR-SAR system has an interesting property. Specifically, the target-related signal components due to the time-reversal refocusing characteristics, as well as some of clutter-related signal components are concentrated at the time-reversal reference point. The remaining clutter-related signal components are scattered around that reference point. In this paper, we model the random media as a collection of point scatterers to avoid unnecessary complexities. We calculate the detection probability of the TR radar system based on the proposed simple random media model.

Cost Optimizing Burn-in Time Determination (비용을 극소화하는 최적 번인시간 결정)

  • The purpose of burn-in is to eliminate the early failures of the products before they are delivered for customer use. Therefore burn-in should he continued until one is reasonally sure that all the weak items have failed, thus leaving the remaining items in a healthy state of reliability. From this point of view, burn-in time dependent costs such as a cost per product per burn-in time, and cost of repair of the product per failure occurred during burn-in time will he increased. Conversely, the cost of field repair of the product per failure occurred during the guarantee period will be decreased since the early failure of the product is fully eliminated during burn-in. Hence, this paper intend to determine optimal burn-in time which minimize the total of above costs associated with burn-in.

  • We consider the problem of scheduling n jobs with sequence-dependent processing times on a set of parallel-identical machines. The processing time of each job consists of a pure processing time and a sequence-dependent setup time. The objective is to maximize the total remaining machine available time which can be used for other tasks. For the problem, a hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed. The algorithm combines a genetic algorithm for global search and a heuristic for local optimization to improve the speed of evolution convergence. The genetic operators are developed such that parallel machines can be handled in an efficient and effective way. For local optimization, the adjacent pairwise interchange method is used. The proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is compared with two heuristics, the nearest setup time method and the maximum penalty method. Computational results for a series of randomly generated problems demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the two heuristics.
