Purpose: Weapon systems have the long life cycle unlike the consumer product. Thus, the reliability of weapon system is improved during the life cycle through the steady technical change. In this paper, we deal with the method of evaluating the reliability of weapon system with the field failure data. Methods: Especially, we present how to gather the field failure data and evaluate the reliability through the case of K-series weapon system. To evaluate reliability, the reliability growth model is used and the result is discussed. Results: It is steadily improved the reliability of K-series weapon system deployed from 2000 to 2004. The frequency of the failures that affect the mission is largely reduced and MTBMF(mean time between mission failure) is also improved. Conclusion: We can guess the trend of the reliability of weapon system with the field data through this study. Furthermore, it can be used to improve the reliability and make maintenance policy.

Purpose: In this study, A reliability assurance model (or reliability program) is proposed to evaluate the reliability of an armed vehicle. The reliability assurance is performed through the reliability-centered activities during its life cycle of development/design, production, deployment, maintenance, and disposal. Methods: By reflecting the current situations of korea defense industry, a reliability assurance model is built up based on the benchmarking results of world leading companies' best practices in same fields. Results: The proposed reliability program of armed vehicles, which is based on the reliability program of ANSI/GEIA-STD 0009, uses DMAIC process of the six sigma methodology from design phase to testing and evaluation phase. Conclusion: This research is supposed to develop reliability program of armed vehicles by integrating DFSS, DFR and reliability growth process.
The safety level of a structural system designed per code specifications can not be inferred directly from the reliability of members due to the load redistribution and nonlinear inelastic structural behavior. Comparison of the system and member reliability, which is scarce in the literature, is likely to indicate any possible inconsistency of design codes in providing safe and economical designs. Such a comparative study is presented in this study for moment resisting two-dimensional steel frames designed per AISC LRFD Specifications. The member reliability is evaluated using the resistance of the beam-column element and the elastic load effects that indirectly accounts for the second-order effects. The system reliability analysis is evaluated based on the collapse load factor obtained from a second-order inelastic analysis. Comparison of the system and member reliability is presented for several steel frames. Results suggest that the failure probability of the system is about one order of magnitude lower than that of the most critically loaded structural member, and that the difference between the system and member reliability depends on the structural configuration, degree of redundancy, and dead to live load ratio. Results also suggest that the system reliability is less sensitive to initial imperfections of the structure than the member reliability. Therefore, the system aspect should be incorporated in future design codes in order to achieve more reliability consistent designs.
Purpose: The purpose of the current study was to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of muscle thickness measurement of the TA using ultrasonography (US) conducted at different inward pressures of approximately 0.5 kg, 1.0 kg, and no pressure control. Methods: Twenty healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Two different examiners measured the thicknesses of the dominant TA of each subject randomly to assess the intra- and inter-rater reliability. The measurement values were analyzed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) with a 95% confidence interval, standard error of measurement, minimal detectable change, and coefficient of variance. Results: All intra-rater reliability ICC values showed high reliability above 0.9. Inter-rater reliability ICC values showed high reliability above 0.9 with 0.5 and 1.0 kg of inward pressure. In contrast, Inter-rater reliability ICC values showed poor reliability (0.23) with no pressure control of inward pressure. Conclusion: The findings showed that maintaining consistent inward pressure is essential for reliable results when the muscle thickness of the TA is measured by different examiners in a clinical setting.

In this paper we proposed the alternative analysis of reliability design using redundancy technique. First, we presented the process for establishing the reliability design alternative analysis process considering the active redundancy and the standby redundancy. and then, the case analysis of A driving equipment was performed in accordance with the reliability design alternative analysis process presented. In case the series reliability design result is not met with the reliability target value. so, the target item for redundancy design of A driving equipment were selected as items with a severity of two or higher. The redundancy design applied with active and standby redundancy techniques were analyzed using BlockSim software. As a result, it was analyzed that reliability design to active redundancy with one of two elements required for A driving equipment is the most efficient compared to the target value of reliability. The results of this study can be usefully used before the reliability design is performed.

In this paper we proposed the test design method of reliability growth management. First, we presented the process for establishing the reliability growth management test design considering the number of failures and the termination test time. Reliability growth analysis of continuous system was performed in accordance with the test design process presented. In case the reliability test result is not met with the reliability target value after more than three failures occurred, the required test times were analyzed that 1,725 hrs for one corrective action, 1,950 hrs for two corrective actions. If the number of failures is less than three, design a reliability demonstration test according to confidence level 80% and 90% was performed using RGA 11 Software. As a result, it is possible to establish the reliability growth management test design with sufficient use of available resources. The results of this study can be used when establishing a test design for assessment of reliability growth management of all continuous systems.
Reliability is the priority matter in guided weapon systems. The reliability prediction data is used during the devel opment stage as the manufacturing cost is very high and the production quantity if quite limited. At the same time it takes relatively a long period of time to acquire a reliable operation data set after deployment such that in order t o determine the operational reliability, weapons must be tested and analyzed in real operating environments. For the research, the life distributions were estimated by using actual operation data and the reliability was calculated by ap plying the method of least squares and maximum likelihood estimation. Also, the comparisons were made between pr edicted reliability and actual operational reliability. As a result, the actual reliability of each system was higher than predicted reliability and it was considered that such a difference was caused by the fact that the application of the l atest designing technology and improved parts to the guided weapon systems was not reflected on the estimation of predicted reliability. It was possible to confirm the actual operational reliability of domestic (ROK) guided weapon sy stems through this research and the methods used here will contribute to the reliability analyses for the future guide d weapon systems to be developed.
In the case of a one-shot logistic equipment system that has been stored for a long time, reliability changes with the passage of time. Therefore, when the time comes to use, the storage reliability of the product is an important quality characteristic, and the existing studies have focused on the research for calculating the optimal period inspection cycle to improve the storage reliability. In this study, we analyzed the influence of the two factors on the storage reliability at the convergence point by analyzing the design reliability as well as the periodic inspection cycle. To do this, we applied the existing Martinez storage reliability model to the missile, a representative product of a one-shot system, and analyzed the quantitative effects of the design reliability and the periodic inspection cycle. From the results of the analysis, it was confirmed that the maintenance of the periodic inspection cycle is more important for the improvement of the storage reliability than the design reliability in the design reliability category of the current product.
Purpose: In this study, the reliability growth management procedures for armed vehicle is suggested and an illustrative case study of launcher system is given. Methods: Crow-AMSAA model is adopted to manage reliability growth of armed vehicle using failure data acquired from development test phase to field operation phase. Between the development test phase and the production phase, the suggested reliability growth procedures for armed vehicle entails accelerated life test of the selected module whose design is changed to improve its reliability for assuring the target system reliability. And it can be verified through estimating the system reliability based on the failure data of field operation phase. Results: It is shown that the proposed reliability growth management procedures are effective for armed vehicle based on the case study of launcher system. After estimating the reliability of launcher system at every development test, some items are selected to change their designs for improving reliability. Accelerated life test is performed to prove the reliability improvement and finally it is verified through the field operation. Conclusion: The reliability growth management procedures for armed vehicle is suggested and the case study of launcher system shows it can be effective for managing the reliability growth of the armed vehicle.
In this paper a brief overview of methods to assess the reliability of mechanical systems and structures is presented. A selection of computational procedures, stochastic structural dynamics, stochastic fatigue crack growth and reliability based optimization are discussed. It is shown that reliability based methods may form the basis for a rational decision making.
