  • In this paper, a mobile relay station (MRS) for vehicles with a beamforming antenna is considered to increase the reliability of the transmission link, particularly for the MRS at the cell boundary. A cell searching and direction-of-arrival estimation method for an MRS with a uniform linear array is proposed for OFDM-based cellular systems in a multipath environment, even with the existence of the symbol timing offsets and carrier frequency offsets. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by computer simulation using the standard profile of IEEE 802.16e.

  • Wireline relay stations(RS's) are connected to cellular base stations(BS's) via radio-over-fiber(RoF) to enhance system capacity and to reduce shadow areas. Unlike wireless multi-hop systems, BS-to-RS signaling is transmitted out-of-band, thus reducing the effect of interference caused by frequency reuse. In this paper, antenna arrays used in addition to the wireline RS's are considered to evaluate the transmission capacity gain and performance variations according to the may structures. In particular, RS locations to maximize the gain, may distribution patterns for a given number of antenna elements, performance enhancement for a varying number of elements are experimentally determined to suggest a proper utilization of antenna ways in conjunction with wireline RS's.

  • This paper investigates optimal relay selection and power allocation under an aggregate power constraint for cooperative wireless sensor networks assisted by amplify-and-forward relay nodes. By considering both transmission power and circuit power consumptions, the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination node is calculated, based on which, a relay selection and power allocation scheme is developed. The core idea is to adaptively adjust the selected relays and their transmission power to maximize the received SNR according to the channel state information. The proposed scheme is derived by recasting the optimization problem into a three-layered problem-determining the number of relays to be activated, selecting the active relays, and performing power allocation among the selected relays. Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides a higher received SNR and a lower bit error rate as compared to the average power allocation scheme.

  • In this paper, we investigate the degrees of freedom (DOF) of the Y channel consisting of three single-antenna users and a two-antenna common access relay, where each user intends to exchange independent messages with the other two users with the assistance of the relay. We show that the DOF of this particular scenario is 1.5. In order to prove this result, we firstly derive a DOF upper bound based on cut-set bound by allowing cooperation among users, which shows that the total DOF is upper bounded by 1.5. Then we propose a novel transmission scheme based on asymmetric signal space alignment (ASSA) to demonstrate the achievability of the upper bound. Theoretical evaluation and numerical results confirm that the upper bound can be achieved by utilizing ASSA, which also proves the optimality of the ASSA-based scheme in terms of DOF. Combining the upper bound and achievability, we conclude that the exact DOF is 1.5. Moreover, we present a novel iterative joint beamforming optimization (I-JBO) algorithm to further improve the sum rate. Numerical simulations have been provided to demonstrate the convergence speed and performance advantage of the I-JBO algorithm.

  • In this paper, joint methods of cell searching and Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) estimation for a mobile relay station with a uniform circular array are proposed. The proposed joint estimation method for the mobile relay station is robust even when there exist symbol timing offsets between the signals received from adjacent base stations. Also, the proposed joint estimation method can reduce computational complexity and processing time, compared with the case where cell searching and DoA estimation are performed separately. Performances of the proposed method are evaluated by computer simulation under Mobile WiMAX environment.

  • propose a mobile relay structure for vehicles with multiple antennas, which can increase performances of mobile communication systems and broadcasting systems significantly. Since cell searching and DoA estimation are required for the terminal in hard handover cellular system, joint techniques for cell searching and DoA estimation are proposed to apply beamforming technique for the mobile relay with multiple antennas located at the cell boundary. The proposed cell searching and DoA estimation techniques are evaluated by computer simulation under the environment similar to WiBro system.

  • In this paper, we develop an interference neutralization (IN) method based on a set of multi-antenna relays for K-user interference channel. The feasibility condition for IN is fully characterized. We further provide a relaxed IN method for the cases in which there are not enough relays to satisfy the feasibility condition.

  • In this paper, we investigate the degrees of freedom (DoF) of a two-cluster multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiway relay interference channel (mRIC), where there are two relays and two users per cluster. In this channel, users within the same cluster exchange messages among themselves with the help of two relays. We first obtain the DoF upper bound of the considered MIMO mRIC based on cut-set bound. Then, we propose a novel transmission strategy, blind interference neutralization (BIN), to approach the DoF upper bound. This new method utilizes the overheard information at two relays and focuses on the beamforming matrix designs at two relays so that the channel state information (CSI) at users is not required. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we show that the DoF upper bound can be obtained by using the BIN scheme. From simulation results, we show that the proposed BIN scheme can provide significant performance gain over the conventional time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme in terms of DoF. In addition, we show that the BIN scheme is a superior approach to the existing signal space alignment (SSA) schemes for the considered mRIC.

  • We consider multiuser multiple antenna two-way relaying systems in which all users exchange their data with their counterparts with the help of a relay. The systems complete all data exchanges in two time phases called multiple access phase and broadcasting phase for spectral efficiency and therby require an effective scheme reducing self-interference (SI) and multiuser interference (MUI). Different from the conventional scheme suppressing both SI and MUI at the relay, the proposed scheme adopts SI cancelation (SIC) at the users and renders the relay to suppress the MUI mainly considering the SIC output. We analyze the symbol error rate (SER) and the achievable diversity order of the proposed scheme when the multiple access phase is dominant in the performance and obtain simulation results on the SER and the sum rate under various conditions. The results show that the proposed scheme improves the symbol error rate and the sum rate remarkably at the cost of complexity increase.

  • A distributed zero-beamforming based cooperative jamming technique is useless when an eavesdropper detects the sharing seed. In addition, the currently alternatives are very limited when the eavesdropper is located nearby a source for wiretapping. This letter presents a solution to this extreme case. Relay randomly generates and transmits a binary jamming message to both source and destination in the first phase. When these two receivers securely and correctly decode the message, the source creates and transmits another message based on the use of exclusive-or for its information message and the decoded message. Consequently, the next transmission can avoid the eavesdropping.
