Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise therapy and relaxation therapy on the level of ACTH and cortisol in workers and to determine, from this information, the effectiveness of applied exercise therapy and relaxation therapy as a nursing intervention method for workers experiencing stress. Method: The subjects were divided into an exercise therapy group. a relaxation therapy group, and a control group. The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design (exercise therapy : n=12. relaxation therapy: n=12, control group, the group without exercise or relaxation therapy: n= 12). The subjects in the exercise therapy group were given a particular intensity for each kp over 30 min, bicycle ergometer which uses the LX PE training system before and after four weeks of training. The subjects did 60-70% exercise intensity exercise therapy for eight weeks The relaxation therapy subjects were trained using a modified Jacobson's relaxation technique for eight weeks. The exercise and relaxation therapy groups were trained at the following intensity for eight weeks (3 times/week, 30 min/day). Changes in the levels of ACTH and cortisol were identified. Two-way ANOVA and multiple range test (SNK: Student Newman Keul) were used to examine the effects of exercise therapy and relaxation therapy at four and eight weeks. Result: 1. Changes in the level of ACTH in the relaxation therapy group were statistically significant at .05 level, and were better than that of the exercise therapy group after eight weeks. But there was no significant difference between the exercise therapy group and the control group. 2. Change in the level of cortisol in the relaxation therapy group were statistically significant at .05 level as compared to the exercise therapy group and the control group after four weeks, but not after eight weeks. Also, the relaxation therapy was statistically significant at .05 level after four weeks compared to before treatment, but there was a tendency toward increased cortisol after eight weeks. Conclusion: Relaxation therapy was found to be more effective in stress treatment than exercise therapy and as such is a desirable nursing intervention method for stress hormone reduction in workers.
This study was done in order to help alleviate or prevent the anxiety resulting from cardiac catheterization among adult patients. This goal may be re-ached through providing relaxation techenique to the patients. Such an informativeness would make it possible to establish a basis for comprehensive nursing intervention. The results of this study are summarized as fellows: 1. The first hypothesis:“The experimental group with relaxation informativeness will have less score of state anxiety level before cardiac catheterization than the control group without relaxation informativeness”was accepted. (t=3.72, p=.001). 2. The second hypothesis: “The experimental group with relaxation technique informativeness will have less score of distress level during the procedure than the control group without relaxation technique informativeness”was accepted. (t=2.36, p=.023) 3. Additional analysis; It is seen that most cardiac patients were satisfied with precardiac catheterization procedure information provided by medical teams. (experimental group: 90%, control group: 85%) The relaxation technique informativeness contributed to the decrease of anxiety level. Patients showed interest in reusing the relaxation technique informativeness in the event of further need. In conclusion, the researcher thinks that it is necessary that nurses provide Patients with relaxation technique to reduce the anxiety level with cardiac catheterigation. This will enable them to practice effective comprehensive nursing.
Relaxation technique is an independent nursing intervention used in various stressful situations. Relaxation techniques must be explored regarding relaxing imaginations used by the people in their traditional life experiences. So for Korean relaxation techniques to become culturally acceptable and effective imaginations of relaxation must be developed. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in relaxation levels of Koreans according to five relaxation imaginations and five groups and to analyze the factors influencing relaxation techniques for Korean people. The subjects were 38 hospitalized patients, 21 rural residents, 56 housewives, 16 researchers and 59 nursing students. Data were collected from September 4 to October 24, 1991 by interview or self-re-port questionnaires. The measurement tool was the graphic rating scale of relaxation levels. The data analysis was done by percent, ANOVA and Scheffe test using the SAS program. The. results of study are summerized as follows : 1. The relaxation level of Koreans was significantly different for the five relaxation imaginations (F=5.95, P=0.0001). Relaxation level of ‘after bathing imagination’ was 6.90, ‘in bed imagination’ was 6.55, ‘in the mountain imagination’ was 6.01, ‘snow and fireplace imagination’ was 5.84 and ‘at the seashore imagination’ was 5.80. As a result of the Scheffe test, ‘after bathing imagination’ was found to show a higher relaxation level than ‘at the sea-shore imagination’ ‘in the mountain imagination’ and ’snow and fireplace imagination(P〈.05). 2. The relaxation levels of the Koreans were not different for the five groups(F=1.26, P=0.29). 3. There were no differences in the relaxation level of the koreans according to sex, age, place of residence, place of residence during childhood, marital status, religion or educational status. In conclusion, Korean people prefer the ‘relaxation imagination of after bathing’ to western style relaxation imagination of ‘at the seashore imagination’ and ‘snow and fireplace imagination’.
In this study, stress relaxation tests were carried out by keeping silt type soil specimens under different strain levels. Decreases in the stress values with time data was collected to better understand the effect of the strain level on the relaxation properties of soil specimens. In addition, the stress relaxation effect on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values of the specimens was investigated with a series of tests. According to the results obtained from this study, the UCS values of the silt specimens significantly vary as a result of the stress relaxation effect. The UCS values were determined to increase with an increase of relaxation strain level to a threshold value. On the other hand, the UCS values were found to be affected adversely in case of high stress levels at the initiation of the relaxation, which are close to the peak level.
Stress relaxation tests have been performed under five different tensile strain levels and five different bending strain levels. Three different theoretical models have been developed based on four-element Burger's model, viscoelastic theory and viscous-viscoelastic theory. Experimental data were used to obtain parameters of the models and to verify accuracy of the models. Among the three theoretical models developed in this study, three-integral model (Model 3) based on viscous-viscoelastic theory showed the most exact estimations of stress relaxation under both tensile and bending strains and their correlation coefficients were greater than 0.99 for all the strain levels. Model 1 showed little initial stress relaxation. Model 2 showed excessive initial relaxation and, then, no relaxation after about 20 minute of strain application. Stress retention under strain decreased as strain increased, which means increased stress relaxation as strain increases. When the strain level was less than proportional limit, the effect of strain level on stress relaxation was not clearly shown. However, this effect was increased as strain level increased when strain level was greater than proportional limit.
The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of self-management relaxation training through biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation methods. The effectiveness of the experimental methods was tested by measuring the degree of symptoms of stress (SOS), the McNair's profile of Mood States (POMS), the levels of ephinephrine, norepinephrine, pulse rate, blood pressure and natural killer cells. The subjects of this study were sixty six nursing students divided into four groups : two groups were the biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation groups, the other two groups served as control groups. One was a group of sophomores with no experience at all, the other a junior group without self -management or relaxation training. This study was conducted for eight weeks of clinical practice from April, 26th 1998 to June, 20th 1998. Biofeedback training was done with software developed by J&J company (1-410 form for abdominal respiration training). Progressive muscle relaxation training was done with u audiotape recorded according to Jacobson's Theory. The data were analyzed with frequencies, means, and analysis of covariance using the SPSS program and the significance level of statistics was 5%. The results of the study are : 1) The importance of clinical practice stress reduction is shown in that the level of symptoms of stress in the experimental groups in clinical practice was higher than in the group receiving only a lecture. 2) The relaxation training methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation were effective in reducing the symptoms of stress under the clinical practice stress conditions. 3) The effectiveness of the biofeedback training relaxation method to reduce symptoms of stress was higher than that of progressive muscle relaxation. 4) The relaxation training methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation were effective in reducing stressful mood states. 5) The relaxation training methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation were not effective in reducing epinephrine and norepinephrine levels. 6) The relaxation training methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation were effective in increaing the number of natural killer cells. 7) The relaxation training methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation were effective in decreasing high systolic and diastolic values of blood pressure and high pulse rates. In summary, the relaxation methods of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation in reducing clinical practice stress were effective in lowering the level of symptoms of stress and the profile of stressful mood states. They were also effective in lowering high blood pressure and pulse rates. The relaxation methods were effective in increasing the number of natural killer cells as part of the immune function. However, relaxation methods were not effective in reducing the catecholamine level. The biofeedback training method for reduction of symptoms of stress was more effective than the progressive muscle relaxation method.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of relaxation on stress and blood pressure of the college students induced by a cognitive distress game. Methods: The subjects for this research were 18 individuals whose stress index scores were below 4.0 (Asan city). The 18 subjects were divided into two, 9 students were assigned to the experimental group and the other 9 students to the control group randomly. Survey was used to gather data to recognize general characteristics and the level of stress and blood pressure were measured before and after cognitive distress game and relaxation. The gathered data were analyzed with frequency, $X^2$-test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test and Mann Whitney U test using SPSS 14.0 program. Results: Both level of stress and blood pressure displayed a statistically significant difference pre and post cognitive distress game. Relaxation had a statistically significant effect on level of stress. Relaxation, however, did not have statistically significant effect on blood pressure. Conclusion: The above results suggest that while relaxation was effective in reducing level of stress for college students, and therefore recommendable as a means to deal with stress. However, to investigate the effects on physiological index such as blood pressure, further research is needed.

Preferred combinations of illuminance and color temperature of lighting depend on daily living activities. We investigated whether the illumination stimuli of LED lighting can enhance attention and relaxation level by controlling color temperature and illuminance level according to activities. Illuminations and color temperatures of LED flat panels are controlled in accordance with activities such as office work and resting. The attention and relaxation level under the task specific lightings are compared with those under normal lighting condition. Single channel EEG signals from the NeuroSky's Mindset are used to estimate attention and relaxation level of human subjects under different lighting conditions. Experiment results show that high color temperature with high illuminance of LED lightings (6600K, 800lx) shows improved attention level compared with conventional lighting conditions (4000K, 500lx).

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise therapy and relaxation therapy on catecholamine and heart rate in people in white color jobs and to determine this information the effectiveness of applied exercise therapy and relaxation therapy as a nursing intervention method for stress patients. The subjects were divided into an exercise therapy group, a relaxation therapy group, and control group and the research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-post test design(exercise therapy : n= 12, relaxation therapy : n=12, control group, the group without any treatment in exercise on relaxation therapy : n=12), The subjects in the exercise therapy group were given a particular intensity for each kp during 30min, bicycle ergometer which is using an LX PE training system before & after 4weeks of training. The exercise therapy that was used was Astrard load method which tested absolute exercise load of heart rate before & after four weeks, and resting heart rate was tested for exercise and relaxation therapy before, after four weeks, and at eight weeks. The results of each kp & absolute exercise load were calculated with the target rate formula(maximal heart rate-rest heart rate) x exercise intensity(%) + rest heart rate so the subjects could continue 60-70% exercise intensity for exercise therapy over eight weeks. The relaxation therapy subjects were trained using a modified Jacobson's relaxation technique for eight weeks. The exercise and relaxation therapy were trained at the following intensity for eight weeks(3times/week, 30min/day) to see changes in catecholamine & heart rates. After eight weeks, statistical analysis of exercise & relaxation therapy were carried out Two-way ANOVA and multiple range test(SNK : Student Newman Keul) were used. The results are as follows : 1. The change of epinephrine & norepinephrine in the exercise therapy, relaxation therapy, and control group was statistically significant at the .05 level after four weeks & eight weeks. Also, exercise therapy was statistically significant at .05 level over that of the control group after 4weeks. 2. The change of heart rate in relaxation therapy was statistically significant at the .05 level, and was statistically significant at the .05 level over that of the exercise therapy and control group. In conclusion, it is obvious that exercise therapy and relaxation therapy should be one of the most effective stress treatment and desirable nursing interventions methods for job stress in people in white color jobs.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Progressive muscle relaxation training on pain, Korean version of Oswestry disability index (ODI) and psychological level in chronic low back pain patients with somatization. Methods: A total of 30 subjects were treated with the experimental group (n=15) and conservative physical therapy (n=15). The experimental group was trained with progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and the control group was treated with conservative physical therapy. Physical factor treatment was applied for 60 minutes by hot pack, electrotherapy and ultrasound. Both groups performed three times a week for six weeks. VAS, ODI, psychological level measurements were taken before and after intervention. Results: There was a significant difference in VAS (p<.05) and ODI (p<.01) between experimental and control group. At the psychological level, there were significant differences in somatization (p<0.01) and depression scales (p<.01), but not in anxiety. Conclusion: As a result of this study, the degree of pain was decreased, the level of back pain dysfunction was improved, and the somatization scale and depression scale were decreased by gradual muscle relaxation therapy.
