The intermolecular orbital theory was applied to the Diels-Alder reaction of naphthalene, phenanthrene and 1,2-benzanthracene with maleic anhydride. The expected positions of thermal addition in the alternant bydrocarbons were in agreement with experiment. It was also possible to explain the relative proportions of two isomeric adducts with the calculated stabilization energies. Comparison of the results with paralocalization energies of Brown gave agood linear correlation.

This paper studies the feasibility of using the nonlinear model predictive control as a formation flight control algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles. The optimal control inputs for formation flight are calculated through the cost function which incorporates the relative positions of the individual vehicles to maintain a desired formation and also the inequality constraints on inputs and states using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. In the nonlinear model predictive control setting, the optimal control inputs are implemented in a receding horizon manner, which is suitable for dealing with dynamic constraints. Numerical simulations are executed for the validation of the proposed scheme.
Crystal boundaries in igneous rocks are genetically classified in order to predict the geometric patterns of the boundaries which may aid deciphering the textural code in igneous rocks. Crystal boundaries may be formed by two end-member processes;(1) mechanical and (2) chemical removal of interstitial melt. Mechanical removal of the melt will form displacement impingement boundaries, while chemical removal of the melt will form growth impingement boundaries. The positions of boundaries relative to the material points may be affected by secondary processes such as (1) migration and (2) dissolution. The geometric features of crystal boundaries, suggested in this study, may be useful when studying igneous textures and processes, although it may be impossible to determine the suggested features with the analytical techniques currently avilable.

The interest in evaluation of structural intensity arises for practical reasons, because net energy flow distribution offers information of energy transmission path, positions of sources, and sinks of vibration energy. In this paper, structural intensity analysis of local ship structures using finite element method(FEM) is carried out. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the relative accuracy according to mesh fineness. The structural intensity of a stiffened plate varying their mesh fineness is analyzed and the results are compared with those obtained by the assumed made method. As results, the proper mesh size in qualitative/quantitative structural intensity analysis of plate structures is proposed. In addition, the propagation phenomenon of vibration energy is investigated for the L-type plate and box-girder structures.

Nowadays, the two microphone method is accepted as the standard as specified in ASTM E1050-90 for measuring in-duct acoustic properties. However, research results on using the least square method with multiple measurement points and broadband excitation have been reported for enhancing the frequency response of the two microphone method. In this paper, the effects of varying the relative measurement positions on errors in the estimation of the acoustic quantities is studied for the multiple microphone method. Both of the theoretical and experimental results show that, among every possible sensor positioning configurations, the equidistant positioning of sensors yields the smallest error within the effective measurement frequency range. In addition, it is noted that the measurement accuracy can be increased and the effective frequency range can be widened by increasing the number of equidistant sensors. Measurement examples are shown and the results support the findings.
The photoisomerization behavior of benzylideneacetophenones, known as chalcones, was studied. We synthesized the chalcone derivatives that have ether groups at 4 and 4' positions. Due to the electron donating ability of the ether oxygen, the bond order of the single bond between two phenyl ring of the chalcone strengthened, which eventually increased the rotational barrier of the single bond. The rotational barrier of the single bond is about 20-22 kcal/mole. Thermal recovery of this process took about 1 min. The UV-visible spectra of these chromophores exhibit two characteristic absorption peaks at 276 nm and 340 nm. The relative intensity of the peaks varies depending on the alkyl chain length of the substituent. Photo-irradiation with the 365 nm light monotonously decreases the 340 nm peak. However, the photo-irradiation with 254 nm light induce two competing processes and produced rather complicated absorption profile.

Water in concrete has an effect on properties of concrete very much, such as shrinkage, creep, fire resistance, durability, freezing and thawing resistance. Therefore predicting the moisture distribution in concrete is very important. And since the diffusion process of water in concrete is strongly dependent on the temperature and pore humidity, the process is highly nonlinear phenomena. In this study, a finite element program which was capable of simulating the moisture distribution in concrete was developed, and differential drying shrinkage due to the water diffusion process was measured at the different positions of concrete. This F.E.M. program is shown that the analytical results of this study are in good agreement with experimental data. Shrinkage strain caused by moisture distribution was increased with the decrease of pore relative humidity.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to solve the problem of placement of rectangular blocks whose sizes and shpaes are pre-determined. The proposed method solves the placement of many retangular blocks of different sizes and shapes in a hierarchical manner, so as to minimize the chip area. The placement problem is divided into several sub-problems: hierarchical partioning, hierarchical area/shape estimation, hierarchical pattern pacement, overlap removal, and module rotation. After the circuit is recursively partitioned to build a hierarchy tree, the necessary wiring area and module shpaes are estimated using the resutls of the partitioning and the pin information before the placement is performed. The placement templaes are defined to represent the relative positions of the modules. The area and the connectivity are optimized separately at each level of hierachy using the placement templates, so the minimization of chip area and wire length can be achieved in a short execution time. Experiments are made on the MCNC building block benchmark circuits and the results are compared with those of other published methods. The proposed technique is shown to produce good figures in tems of execution time and chip area.
This paper describes an initial pole position estimation method of a magnetic pole sensorless permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) with an incremental encoder, The accurate initial pole position is estimated by using an efficient numerical method of Secant Method, which finds either of two zero torque/force positions and then the correct d-axis. It can be simply applicable to both rotary and linear PMSM because it only requires the tuned current controller and the relative position information. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed method with respect to highly accurate pole position estimation under the moderate moving distance and convergence time.

Numerical analysis is done to investigate which would be the most influencing process parameter in determining the uniformity of deposition thickness in TiN ICP-CVD(inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition). Two configurations of ICP antenna are modeled; side and top planar. Side and top gas inlets are considered with each ICP antenna geometries. Precursor for TiN deposition was TDMAT(Tetrakis Diethyl Methyl Amido Titanium). Two step volume dissociation of TDMAT is used and absorption, desorption and deposition surface reactions are included. Most influencing factors are H and N concentration dissociated by electron impact collisions in plasma volume which depends on the relative positions of gas inlet and ICP antenna generated hot plasma region. Low surface recombination of N shows hollow type concentration, but H gives a bell type distribution. Film thickness at substrate edges is sensitive to gas flow rate and at high pressures getting more dependent on flow characteristics.
