  • Variation in relative contents of clay minerals was used to genetically interpret depositional environment of the Upper Jurassic Solnhofen limestone. Mineralogical examination of whole rocks and clay fractions indicates that the faule and flinz beds are composed mainly of calcite and quartz with minor amount of clay minerals such as illite, kaolinite, and smectite. Smectite shows a trend of illitization: illite layers increase with increasing of burial depth. With increasing burial depth, relative abundance of kaolinite with quartz and illite increases. This implies that the Solnhofen basin was formed during the transgression based on reduce of terrigenous influx.

  • Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a type of “smart” material, and their properties can be controlled rapidly and reversibly under the influence of an external stimulus. The application of an external magnetic field can change the shear modulus, hardness, and friction coefficient of MREs. The friction can cause vibration; moreover, the vibration can affect friction. The change of friction depends on the relative motion, normal force, roughness of the rubbing surfaces, material type, temperature, lubrication, relative humidity, and vibration condition. As MREs are a type of “smart material,” their friction coefficient can be reduced by applying an external magnetic field—the applications of this feature in engineering have been widely studied. However, the friction properties of MREs under vibration have not been tested to date. In this study, MRE samples and a reciprocating friction tester were fabricated. The friction coefficient was measured to evaluate the friction properties under various vibration conditions; subsequently, the wear depth and wear surface profile of the MRE were observed in order to evaluate the wear properties. The results show that the friction coefficient of the MREs decreased when a magnetic field was applied. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreased when the vibrational amplitudes increased. The wear depth of the MRE also decreased as the vibrational amplitudes increased.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the warm deep drawability of square cups of clad sheet metals, by changing temperatures of die and blankholder and blank materials. Two kinds of clad sheet metals, STS304-A1050-STS304 and STS304-A1050-STS430 were chosen for experiments. The relative drawing depth of STS304-A1050-STS304 clad sheet was increased up to 4.4 at $150^{\circ}C$ that was $29\%$ higher than at room temperature, whereas STS304-A1050-STS430 material was improved to 3.65 at $120^{\circ}C$ which was $16\%$ better than at room temperature. In addition, comparison of wall thickness and hardness of a warm drawn cup with those of room temperature showed more even distributions. Therefore, warm forming technique was confirmed to ive better results in deep drawing of stainless clad sheet metal.

  • Radio frequency (RF) microwave can be used to predict glucose concentration in a sample. This paper presents preliminary results in determining the concentration by measuring relative permittivity in the solutions of distilled water, saline, human serum, and human blood containing glucose. It was shown that the microwave method has larger penetration depth of about 100times of NIR, than NIR technique in measuring glucose concentration for the tissue like a human muscle. The larger penetration depth of the method has advantages because it is more useful to detect glucose in a human body non-invasively. In the experiments, sensitivity for detecting glucose concentration in blood solutions was almost 57mg/dl at the frequency of approximately 5.8GHz.

  • In this study, we predicted locations vulnerable to ground subsidence hazard using fuzzy logic and geographic information system (GIS). Test was carried out at an abandoned underground coal mine in Samcheok City, Korea. Estimation of relative ratings of eight major factors influencing subsidence and determination of effective fuzzy operators are presented. Eight major factors causing ground subsidence were extracted and constructed as a spatial database using the spatial analysis and the probability analysis functions. The eight factors include geology, slope, landuse, depth of mined tunnel, distance from mined tunnel, RMR, permeability, and depth of ground water. A frequency ratio model was applied to calculate relative rating of each factor, and the ratings were integrated using fuzzy membership function and five different fuzzy operators to produce a ground subsidence susceptibility map. The ground subsidence susceptibility map was verified by comparing it with the existing ground subsidences. The obtained susceptibility map well agreed with the actual ground subsidence areas. Especially, ${\gamma}-operator$ and algebraic product operator were the most effective among the tested fuzzy operators.

  • A relatively simple model of a buried structure response to a surface loading that can simulate a possible opening and closure of a gap between the soil and the structure is presented. Analysis of the response of small and medium scale buried roof slabs under surface impulsive loading shows that the model's predictions are in fairly good agreement with the experimental results. Application of the model to a study case shows the relative influence of system parameters such as, the depth of burial, the arching coefficient, and the roof thickness, on the interface pressure and on the roof displacement. This model demonstrates the effect of a gap between the structure and the soil. The relative importance of including a gap opening and closure in the analysis is examined by the application of the model to a study case. This study results show that the deeper the depth of burial, the longer the gap duration, and the shorter the duration of the initial interface impact, while the higher the soil's shear resistance, the higher the gap duration, and the shorter the initial interface impact duration.

  • Warm draw die technique which is one of the new forming technologies to improve formability of sheet metal is applied to the cylindrical and square cup drawing of stainless-aluminum clad sheets. In experiments the temperature of die and blank holder is varied from room temperature to $180^{\circ}C$, while the punch is cooled by circulation of coolant to increase the fracture strength of workpiece on the punch comer area. Test materials chosen for experiments are STS304-A1050-STS304 clad sheets. Teflon film as a lubricant is used on both sides of a workpiece. The limit drawing ratio and relative drawing depth as well as quality of drawn cups(distribution of thickness)are investigated and validity of warm drawing process is also discussed. No separation between each laminated material after drawing occurred through inspection by microscope as well as application of penetrant remover and bond strength test. Therefore, warm forming technique was confirmed to give better results in deep drawing of stainless clad sheet metal.

  • The magnitude of evanescent modes in terms of dynamics it investigated in case that the transformation of water waves is predicted by the linear wave theory. For the waves propagating over two steps, the eigenfunction expansion method is used to predict the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves by the component of evanescent modes as well as propagating modes. Then. the relative importance of evanescent modes to the propagating modes is investigated. The numerical experiments find that the evanescent modes are pronounced at the relative water depth of k$_1$h$_1$=0.11$\pi$ and the water depth ratio of h$_2$/h$_1$ close to zero.

  • Nondestructive examination for low pressure turbine disc in standard nuclear power plant using phased array technique was studied. For this purpose, disc mockups were made and notches were machined in the mockups. Detection and length sizing by different methods are compared. Depth of deep notches could be measured by using AATT(absolute arrival time technique) or RATT(relative arrival time technique) but shallow notches that must be detected in early stage couldn't be measured by these two methods. For this case, notch depth was estimated by using signal response angle range and preyed usefulness.

  • In this study, the drag forces on a submerged square cylinder were analyzed using a three dimensional hydrodynamic model. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results to check the reliability of the numerical simulations, and the characteristics of the drag forces with the relative depths were analyzed by analyzing the pressure acting on the cylinder surface, which are normally difficult to measure experimentally. The numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square cylinder originate mainly from the pressure forces, and component of the shear forces decreased with increasing relative depth. The pressure coefficient distributions showed that in the case of a low relative depth, a relatively high pressure was formed in the front of a cylinder, and a relatively low pressure was formed in the rear, which gives a high drag coefficient. In a high relative depth, the pressure in the front decreased and pressure in the rear increased, which is a similar phenomenon to that normally observed in two dimensional square cylinder flow. The effect of the static pressure was analyzed and the surface elevation difference between the front and rear zone of a cylinder has a limited effect on the drag forces. Finally, the numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square are dominated by the dynamic pressure formed by three dimensional flow and the distribution of local surface elevation.
