  • Permeability to vapor and water among other performances required for finishing materials is dealt with in this study. The relative moisture content of concrete coated/covered with a finishing material was experimentally investigated while changing the environmental conditions including temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall. An organic paint (water-based urethane), organic synthetic resin emulsion-type film coating (film coating E), and inorganic porcelain tiles were selected as the finishing materials. When compared from the aspect of vapor and water permeability, the vapor permeability and water permeability of water-based urethane were high and low, respectively; those of film coating E were high and high, respectively; and those of porcelain tiles were low and low, respectively. This means that the moisture state of concrete structures is governed not only by the environmental conditions but also by the performance of finishing materials. It is therefore of paramount importance to appropriately select a finishing material to address the specific deteriorative factors involved in the concrete structure to be finished.

  • A simulation was done to analyze the seepage problems due to seawater intrusion through the embedded rock layers on heterogeneous layers of sea-dike. Numerical analysis with SAMTLE(developed by author) was done by taking various relative permeability $ratio(R_r/R_e)$. These results showed, when the sed-dike is newly designed, operated, and maintained considering the safety of sea-dike in seepage problems, these embankment materials are prudently chosen. The permeability of the soil materials, within the range of salinity management in freshwater, is comparatively high, however, the permeability of rock materials for bottom rock layer is low. Therefore, when the relative permeability $ratio(R_r/R_e)$ is bellow 10 it is safety in seepage problems of sea-dike.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of ultrasonic waves on the relative permeability under a range of soil type, flushing rate, and sonication power. This study was conducted in the laboratory using a specially designed and fabricated equipment, and the laboratory study was simulated by ECLPISE 100 which is a commercial black oil simulator. The test results indicated the sonication increased contaminant extraction significantly. From analytical standpoint, sonication caused a change in the relative permeability of the test samples, a reduction in residual oil saturation and an increase in both irreducible water saturation and wettability. These three parameters are highly related with $(C_{10})^2$. The computer software ECLIPSE 100 can be used to analyze the change of the relative permeability due to sonication in two phase immiscible flow.

  • It is difficult to accurately predict each flow rate of landfill gas and leachate extracted from many of wells, which have been completed into a waste landfill containing gas and water. However it may be approximately predicted if we can define only relative fluid permeability of gas and leachate flowing through landfill porous media. Therefore numerical simulation using multi-phase flow equations makes use of ei s input data of the relative permeability which is measured and calculated in laboratory environment like in-situ, and consequently we can quantitatively obtain each flow rate of gas and leachate from collection wells. These series of technologies can provide with the important informations to determine the success or failure of landfill gas energy and landfill stabilization. This paper analyses the characteristics of landfill gas collection by six classes of case studies for none described landfill.

  • Shale gas reservoir are composed of very fine grained particles, and their pores are very small, at the scale of nanometers. In this study, a parametric study was implemented to investigate the effect of knudsen diffusion, relative permeability and permeability reduction in shale gas reservoir. Shale gas reservoir model in Horn-River was developed to confirm the productivity for different design parameters such as diffusion, relative permeability, connate water saturation, and permeability reduction.

  • The constitutive relation among capillary pressure, saturation and relative permeability should be predetermined in order to simulate immiscible water-gas flow in porous media. The relation between saturation and relative permeability becomes more important when the capillary force can be disregarded and viscous friction force governs the flow. In this study, a 2-dimensional finite difference numerical model was developed, in which the variation of viscosity with pressure and that of relative permeability with water saturation can be treated. Seven cases of parallel plate tests were performed in order to obtain the characteristic equation of relative permeability which would be used in. the developed numerical model. It was not possible, however, to match the curves of relative permeability from the plate tests with the existing emperical models. Consequently a logistic equation was proposed as a new emperical model. As this model was composed of the parameter involving aperture size, any aperture size of fracture can be applied to the model. For the purpose of verification, the characteristic equation of relative permeability was applied to the developed numerical model and the computed results were compared with those of plate test. As a result of application of numerical model, in order to check the field applicability, to single fracture surrounding an underground storage cavern, the simultaneous flow of water and propane gas was able to be simulated properly by the model.

  • In this study, the characteristics of gas-water relative permeability curves in a single fractured-plate according to the various aperture size were analyzed by using the Hele-Shaw type glass plate model. The plate was made of glasses for the observation of the two-phase flow pattern, and seven cases were set up based on the aperture size in the range of field scale from 30 to $120\mum$. The experiment was conducted by steady-state method, and the water saturation was determined more accurately by the developed digital image process technique. The empirical equations of relative permeability to gas and water for single fractured-plate were correlated by using the aperture size which directly affects the two-phase flow pattern and critical saturation.

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of relative humidity and fiber properties on the moisture permeability of multilayer systems by measuring water vapor transmission in the overlapping condition of various fabrics. The results confirmed that the property of the fabric in contact with the humid environment affects the moisture permeability. If the layer facing the humid environment is hydrophobic and the layer facing the dry environment is superhydrophobic, water vapor transmission increases by up to 17.8% compared to the opposite conditions. Comparing the correction values of the water vapor transmission reflecting the thickness of the specimen under the multilayer condition showed that permeability was higher when the hydrophilic or hydrophobic layer was facing the humid environment. The opposite was true from the "push-pull" effect of absorption mechanism. In the case of moisture permeability, the more hydrophilic the surface facing the humid environment, the more permeable that water vapor diffuses and passes through. It was concluded that the "pull-push" effect, in which water vapor diffuses widely through the hydrophilic facing a humid environment and then passes through the hydrophobic layer, contributes to the improvement of permeability. Permeability differed according to the multilayer overlapping condition. When the relative humidity was high, the "pull-push" effect was insignificant. This is caused by water droplets absorption after the partial migration of water due to condensation. These results suggest that the overlapping conditions and properties of fabrics should vary depending on heavy sweating or not.

  • This study was focused on the investigation of permeability of latex modified concrete as the latex content variated such as 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The rapid chloride permeability test was used to evaluate the relative permeability of latex-modified concretes and conventional concretes. The results showed that the permeability of latex-modified concretes was considerably lower than conventional concretes tested, which may be due to the latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles.
