  • Many studies have been carried out on carbon fiber-reinforced plastic sheet(hereafter CFRP sheet)-confined concrete specimens for improve structural performance of concrete structures. To complement the existing studies, a parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of various design parameters such as layers of CFRP sheet, size and aspect ratio of specimens, and overlap length. The behavior of CFRP-confined concrete is compared using stress-strain curves of each specimen. And the strengthening effect of CFRP sheet is examined by maximum compressive strength. As the layers of CFRP sheet increases, structural performance of CFRP-confined concrete is significant increased. If the overlap length is more than 5% of circumstance, strengthening effect is not affected. In addition, a test database assembled from test results and existing studies is presented. Using these test database, accuracy and reliability of the existing strength models for CFRP-confined concrete are verified.

  • The paper deals with the rupture strain estimation of fiber sheets. The experimental study involved tensile testing of 120 fiber sheet specimens and bending testing of 72 concrete beams strengthened with various types of fiber sheets(carbon, glass, and aramid fiber). Concrete beams have 3 types of reinforcement ratios. Rupture strains of fiber sheet specimens are determined by tensile tests to be a little less than the tensile failure strain by the catalog, independently on the number of fiber sheet layers. It is shown that the rupture strain of fiber sheet bonded to reinforced concrete beam is not constant, but decreases as the fiber sheet layer increases. Based on these results, the rupture fiber sheet strain is estimated.

  • Presented are the results of recent tests on diagonal shear failure of reinforced concrete beams which are externally reinforced in the transverse direction by a unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer, instead of the traditional steel stirrups. Three different series of the beams with different shear reinforcements, i.e. U-wrapping with carbon sheet, U-wrapping with carbon strips and full wrapping with carbon strips were tested. Those beams were geometrically similar, and the size range is 1:1.9:4. The failure of the beams are characterized by delamination, crushing of concrete and distributed shear cracks. It is found that the size effect is much weaker than that of the reference beams without CFRP. Therefore CFRP sheet may be used as the transverse reinforcement with a minor size effect. However, it is not clear that the same conclusion can be drawn in other sizes. Further researches are recommended.

  • This paper presents experimental investigations about flexural strength and durability of reinforced concrete beams repaired using ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite (DFRCC) and carbon fiber sheet through freezing and thawing test. Total 14 RC beams of $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ size were tested by 3-point bending and freezing and thawing test by KS F 2456. The beams were reinforced using 3D10 steels on both the tensile and compressive sides, and repaired on 3 sides expect on top cycle. Test results showed that the beams repaired using fiber carbon sheet revealed about 15% higher values of flexural strength compared than the cases of DFRCC motar. On the other hand, the results did not showed meaningful differences in the aspect of durability. For further research, consideration of the steel interference effect and real old specimens such as taken from real deteriorated structures are needed to be tested after repairing with DFRCC and carbon fiber sheet.

Total 24 RC specimens of 100x100x400mm size were tested by compressive strength test and freezing and thawing test by KS F 2456. The specimens were reinforced using 4D10 steels and repaired on 4 sides expect on top cycle. Test results showed that the specimens repaired using fiber carbon sheet revealed about 5% higher values of the compressive strength compared than the cases of DFRCC motar. On the other hand, the resurts did not showed meaningful differences in the aspect of durability. • This paper presents the experimental results of flexural and compression steel members strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets. In the flexural test, the five specimens were fabricated and the test parameters were the number of CFRP ply and the ratio of partial-length bonded CFRP sheets of specimen. The CFRP sheet strengthened steel beam had failure mode: CFRP sheet rupture at the mid span of steel beams. A maximum increase of 11.3% was achieved depending on the number of CFRP sheet ply and the length of CFRP sheet. In the compression test, the nine specimens were fabricated and the main parameters were: width-thickness ratio (b/t), the number of CFRP ply, and the length of the specimen. From the tests, for short columns it was observed that two sides would typically buckle outward and the other two sides would buckle inward. Also, for long columns, overall buckling was observed. A maximum increase of 57% was achieved in axial-load capacity when 3 layers of CFRP were used to wrap HSS columns of b/t = 60 transversely.

  • This study aims at the development of computer Program for the deformation analysis of soft clay layers, and using this computer program, study the constraint effect of deformation- heaving, lateral displacement-of the soft clay layers reinforced with sheet pile at the tip of banking or improvement of soft clay layer up to hard strata, under intact state (natural) and the state of vertical drain respectively. For this study, Biot's consolidation theories and modified Cam-clay theory for constitutive equation for FEMI were selected and coupled governing equation, and christian-Boehmer's technique was applied to solve the coupled relationship. The following results are obtained. 1. Sheet pile or improvement of soft clay layer to the hard strata work well against the settlement of neighboring ground. B. In view of restriction of heaving or lateral displacement, sheet pile is not supposed to be of use. 3. Sheet pile is of effect only when vertical drain is constructed for acceleration of consolidation and load increases gradually. B. The larger the rigidity of improvement of layer to hard strata is, the less settlement occurs.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the reinforced concrete beam using hybrid retrofitting with two materials (groove and embedding FRP rod, CFRP sheet) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Seven reinforced concrete beams, retrofitted groove and embedding FRP rod (NER series) and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series), and standard specimen (NBS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Design parameters of test specimens are the amount of groove and embedding FRP rod and lapping CFRP sheet. Test results showed that the maximum load carrying capacity of specimens with groove and embedding FRP rod and groove and embedding FRP rod with CFRP sheet (NERL series) were increased the by 12~46% and 22~77% respectively in comparison with the standard specimen NBS. Test specimens NER series were failed with the adhesion slip and concrete cover separation. And test specimens NERL series were failed with the adhesion slip due to the confining effect of lapping CFRP sheet.

  • In this paper, it is the effect of using fiber sheet (Carbon Fiber Sheet & Aramid Fiber Sheet) and Steel Plate for reinforced concrete beam, 25 specimens are tested, 16 specimens for bending capacity and the other are for shear capacity. In the case of bending testing, the kind and quantity of the reinforcement materials, the bondage and the existence of crack were selected as experimental variables. And in the case of shear testing, it is testified the effect of reinforcement with the variables of the method of reinforcement (side type and U type). As a result, using the reinforcement meterials can increase the capacity of bending stress.

  • Since improved capacity for RC bridges has been required due to deterioration or increase in traffic, the deflection of cracked reinforced concrete slabs need to be reconsidered. Strengthening is known as the better way to improve capacity of bridges than reconstructing. In this paper, Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was introduced as one of the best strengthening methods for civil structures. The structures strengthened with FRPs can improve the strengthening capacity and serviceability. Therefore, CFRP sheet and Glass Fiber-Steel Composite Plate (GSP) in this research were used for strengthening slabs of RC bridges. Experimental data from the strengthening will be helpful to better understand the effect of the strengthening and effective flexural rigidity.
