The export of the containers consists of two steps, carrying them into the container yard and, then, out to the ship. For the safety of the ship, the heavier container should be loaded at the lower part of the ship. Because of this, the container rehandling happens during carrying out to the ship, and the number of the rehandling container is an important factor for the loading and unloading capability. There has been many studies for utilizing the idle times after loading the containers in the container yard. This study suggests the method of decreasing the number of container rehandling by preprocessing the container using the information about the weight of the container. This method is the preprocessing one which can decrease, during carrying into the container yard, the number of container rehandling which can happen during carrying out to the ship, and, according to the simulation test, it showed to be more effective than other method.
Purpose - In order to gain the upper hand in competition between container terminals, efforts to improve container terminal productivity continue. Export containers arrive randomly in the container terminal and are carried in the container terminal yard according to the arrival order. On the other hand, containers are carried out of the container terminal yard in order based on container weight, not in order of arrival. Because the carry-in order and the carry-out order are different, rehandling may occur, which reduces the performance of the container terminals. In order to reduce rehandling number, containers can be moved in advance when they arrive, which is called preprocessing. This paper proposes an effective preprocessing algorithm and analyzes the factors that affect the productivity of the container terminals. It also provides a way to choose the best factors for preprocessing for a variety of situations. Research design, data, and methodology - To analyze the impact of factors affecting the performance of preprocessing algorithms presented in this paper, simulations are performed. The simulations are performed for two types of bays, 12 stacks with 8 tiers, and 8 stacks with 6 tiers. Results - The results of the factor analysis that affects the performance of the preprocessing algorithm were as follows. (1) As the LMF increased, preprocessing number increases and rehandling number decreased. (2) The LML effect was greatest when the LML changed from 0 to 1, and that the effect decreased when it changed above 1. (3) The sum of preprocessing number and rehandling number was then shown to be increased after decrease, as the LMF increased. (4) In the case of NCI, a decrease in NCI showed that the containers would become more grouped and thus the performance was improved. (5) There was a positive effect in the case of EFS. Conclusion - In this paper, preprocessing algorithm was proposed and it was possible to choose the best factors for preprocessing for a variety of situations through simulations. Further research related to this study needs to be carried out in the following topic : a study on the improvement of container performance by connecting the preprocessing with remarshalling.
In this paper, we compare and analyze the current state of the productivity of the stevedoring work among several container terminals in 1999. Based on these results of analysis, we firstly classify several factors which impede the efficient operations of container terminal as follows ; late arrival of container beyond cargo closing time(CCT), change of port of destination, change of vessel, and return cargo. Such factors are major cause for the cargo rehandling on terminals, thus deteriorate the overall performance of transfer crane during the stevedoring work. In order to improve the productivity of container terminal, we suggest that it is necessary for establishing and operating the efficient logistics management system. Especially, we emphasize the importance of information exchange on the scheduled cargoes among the relevant parties such as shippers, shipping companies, and terminal operators, which is the most effective way to alleviate the cargo rehandling.

This paper proposes a method for designing stacking warehouses of pyramid type which can be found in storage rooms for steel coils, paper rolls, and drums for oils. Formulas were derived for estimating the expected travel time of cranes and the expected time for rehandling activities. Based on the derived formulas, this study derives the cost function for determining the optimal numbers of rows, bays, tiers of stacks under the condition that the requirement for storage space is satisfied. Numerical examples were given.

Intra-block remarshalling is the task of rearranging into some target bays those containers whim are scattered around the block, so that the containers can be loaded onto the ship ffficiently. Howeuer, if we rearrange the containers without considering the container larding sequence, too mud! rehandling work will be required at the time rf larding to fetch the right containers whim are stacked under the wrong ones. Therefore, the remarshalling should be done by moving the relevant containers in an appropriate order. This paper presents an efficient heuristic search technique for finding an appropriate container moving order during remarshalling to avoid rehandling at the time of larding. Simulation experiments have shown that the proposed method can generate rehandling-free solutions in a real time.

Intra-block remarshalling is the task of rearranging into some target bays those containers which are scattered around within the block, so that the containers can be loaded onto the ship efficiently. However, if we rearrange the containers without considering the container loading sequence, excessive rehandling work will be required at the time of loading because the containers to be fetched are often stacked under other containers. Therefore, the remarshalling should be done by moving the relevant containers in an appropriate order. This paper presents an efficient heuristic search technique for finding an appropriate container moving order during remarshalling to avoid rehandling at the time of loading. Simulation experiments have shown that the proposed method can generate rehandling-free solutions in real time.
If there are containers stacked upon the container to be fetched out of a container yard to vessel, rehandling which moves those containers to other places temporarily is needed. In order to avoid such rehandling, remarshalling which rearranges containers should be done before the vessel arrives. The remarshalling plan is commonly generated within a bay. It happens, however, that the generation of the intra-bay remarshalling plan within the permitted time is not possible because of bad stacking conditions. This paper presents the remarshalling algorithm which uses the empty slots of the neighboring bay as a temporary storage space. Simulation experiments have shown that the presented algorithm can generate the remarshalling plan within the permitted time under any staking conditions.
A basic concept of TAS(Tractor Appointment System), which not only enhances the terminal productivity, but also yields higher efficiency of domestic CT(Container Terminal), is developed in this paper for CT to more competitive and serviceable. To analyze the effects of TAS when applied to the existing four-tier CT, a quantitative analysis is performed. The results showed that the number of rehandling time of CT has been significantly decreased, the efficiency of CT increased, and the flow time of trucks in CT reduced in a great deal

This paper proposes a method for determining the number of storage rooms and designing the storage layout in warehouses for pyramid type stacks whose example are slacks for steel coils, paper rolls, and drums for oils. Formulas are derived for estimating the expected values and the variances of various handling times by cranes. From the derived formulas, the expected queuing time of road trucks is estimated. Base on the derived formulas, this study derives the cost function for determining the optimal numbers of rows, bays, and tiers of stacks and sizing cranes under the condition that the requirement for storage space is satisfied. Results of numerical analysis are provided.

A remarshalling is one of the operational strategies considered importantly at a port container terminal for the fast ship operations and heighten efficiency of slacking yard. The remarshalling rearranges the containers scattered at a yard block in order to reduce the transfer time and the rehandling time of container handling equipments. This Paper deals with the rearrangement problem, which decides to where containers are transported considering time value of each operations. We propose the mixed integer programming model minimizing the weighted total operation cost. This model is a NP-hard problem. Therefore we develope the heuristic algorithm for rearrangement problem to real world adaption. We compare the heuristic algorithm with the optimum model in terms of the computation times and total cost. For the sensitivity analysis of configuration of storage and cost weight, a variety of scenarios are experimented.
