Adaptive digital control system of flow rates for an OTEC plant

  • The purpose of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant control is to provide stable power efficiently by appropriately regulating the seawater flow rates and the working fluid flow rate under conditions of continually changing seawater temperatures. This paper describes digital control of working fluid flow rate based on an adaptive control theory for the "Imari 2" OTEC plant at Saga University. Provisions have been made for linkage between the software of the adaptive control theory and the hardware of the OTEC plant. In implementing the working fluid flow rate control, if persistency of excitation conditions are lost, the algorithm of identification often exhibits bursting phenomena. To avoid this difficulty, the stopping-and-starting rule for identification was derived and was used for the working fluid flow rate control. Satisfactory control performance was then obtained by using this digital control system.ol system.

  • In industry, the speed control of single-phase induction motor in domestic use is generally controlled by a simple ON-OFF or PID control method. However, in this case, in order to have a good speed regulating characteristics, itself should be modified in accordance with the optimum PID factors which are varied each time operating speed changes. Shortening the development time and saving the cost which are needed to modify the controller is a major problem to be solved now in industry. In order to alleviate the above difficulties, it is proposed to apply adaptive control technique using MRFAC(Model Reference Following Adaptive Control) for the speed control of single-phase induction motor which has scarcely been studied. In this paper, the above speed control technique is achieved using MCS-96 one chip micro controller with a good speed control characteristics and it is expetted to open a wide application field in the speed control of single-phase induction motor in the future.

  • In this paper the modeling and control of a twin roll strip caster is investigated. Mathematical models for the strip casting process are obtained by analyzing five critical areas such that the molten steel level in the pool, solidification process, roll separating force and torque, roll dynamics including hydraulic actuators, and roll drive system. A two-level control strategy is proposed. At lower level, three local subsystems are independently feedback-controlled by suitable local controllers which perform well to the behaviors of each subsystem. They are a variable structure control of the molten steel level in the pool, an adaptive predictive control of the roll gap which is directly related to the strip thickness, and an $H^{\infty}$ control of the roll drive system. At higher level, all reference signals to the lower level subsystems are generated by an optimal controller in the perspective of regulating the strip thickness and roll separating force.   • This paper presents an active position control of a single-rod cylinder system featuring an electrorheological(ER) fluid-based valve. The ER fluid consisting of silicone oil and chemically treated particles is firstly composed and its Bingham property is tested as a function of imposed electric field. A multi-channel plate type of ER valve is then designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model. Performance test of the ER valve is undertaken by evaluating pressure drop with respect to the number of electrode as well as the intensity of the electric field. Subsequently, the ER valve-cylinder system is constructed and its governing equation of motion is derived. A neural control scheme for position control of the cylinder is formulated by incorporating proportional-plus-derivative(PD) controller and implemented. Experimental results of both regulating and tracking control responses are presented in order to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed ER valve-cylinder control system.

  • This paper studies on the design of an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control system for hot strip mills. The looper which is placed between each stand plays an important role in controlling strip width by regulating strip tension variation generated from the velocity difference of main work rolls. The mathematical model for looper is firstly obtained by Taylor's linearization of nonlinear differential equations, where it is given as a linear and time invariant state-space equation. Secondly, a looper servo controller is designed by ILQ control algorithm, which is an inverse problem of LQ(Linear Quadratic optimal control) control. By tunning control gain arbitration parameters and time constants, it is shown that the ILQ looper servo controller has the performance that makes well to follow desired trajectories of both strip tension and looper angle.

  • A one-stage direction and flow control valve was studied theoretically and experimentally. A direction and flow control valve maintains a constant flow rate by changing the spool-orifice area under the variation of valve pressure drop, since the spool-orifice area is varied by the action of flowforces on the spool. A direction and flow control valve has the advantage of simple and low-cost structure compared to a conventional flow control valve utilizing a pressure regulating spool which regulates the pressure drop caused by flow through the metering orifice. The static and dynamic characteristics of a one-stage direction and flow control valve was analyzed. Experimental results on the flow control characteristics of the manufactured valve show satisfactory agreement with simulation results.

  • This paper presents the comparison results of control algorithm for the simultaneous control of a multi output converter system that controls, simultaneously and independently, the separate Buck converter and Boost converter with the different specification by one DSP digital controller. As two separate converters are regulated by only one DSP, it is possible to achieve the simple digital control circuit for regulating the multi output DC-DC converter. By setting the software switch state, PI and Fuzzy controller can be applied as a controller for each converter without any change of hardware. Also, it is included the control characteristics comparison between PI and Fuzzy controller. The control characteristics of each PWM DC-DC converter is validated by experimental results.

  • We have developed a digital control rod control system not only to improve its performance but also to improve its reliability and speed of response so that it can replace the old fashioned analog system. However, a new developed digital control system should be tested to prove the validity by using any prototype or mock-up before application. The reliability prediction and the reliability block diagram analysis methods were adopted to verify the reliability of the developed hardware. For the case of software, especially fur a new developed control algorithm it has been tested to prove performances and validation by using a dynamic simulator and mock-up of control rod drive mechanism altogether. Here we want to present some key factors regarding to the new developed digital system with some verification procedures.

Effects of multiple MR dampers controlled by fuzzy-based strategies on structural vibration reduction

  • Fuzzy logic based control has recently been proposed for regulating the properties of magnetorheological (MR) dampers in an effort to reduce vibrations of structures subjected to seismic excitations. So far, most studies showing the effectiveness of these algorithms have focused on the use of a single MR damper. Because multiple dampers would be needed in practical applications, this study aims to evaluate the effects of multiple individually tuned fuzzy-controlled MR dampers in reducing responses of a multi-degree-of-freedom structure subjected to seismic motions. Two different fuzzy-control algorithms are considered, a traditional controller where all parameters are kept constant, and a gain-scheduling control strategy. Different damper placement configurations are also considered, as are different numbers of MR dampers. To determine the robustness of the fuzzy controllers developed to changes in ground excitation, the structure selected is subjected to different earthquake records. Responses analyzed include peak and root mean square displacements, accelerations, and interstory drifts. Results obtained with the fuzzy-based control schemes are compared to passive control strategies.

Design and Application of a New Sliding Mode Controller with Disturbance Estimator

  • The conventional sliding mode control (SMC) technique requires a priori knowledge of the upperbounds of disturbances and/or modeling uncertainties to assure robustness. This, however, may not be easy to obtain in practical situation. This paper presents a new methodology, a sliding mode control with disturbance estimator (SMCDE), which offers a robust control performance without a priori knowledge about the disturbance. The proposed technique is featured by an average value of the imposed disturbance over a certain period. A nonlinear spring-mass-damper system and a two-link robot system are adopted as illustrative application examples. Control performances such as estimation error and tracking error are compared between the proposed methodology and conventional scheme.
