  • This paper proposes a hierarchical dual filtering (HDF) algorithm to estimate the spatial region between a Cloud of Things (CoT) gateway and an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The accuracy of the spatial region estimation is important for autonomous CoT clustering. We conduct spatial region estimation using a hidden Markov model (HMM) with a raw Bluetooth received signal strength indicator (RSSI). However, the accuracy of the region estimation using the validation data is only 53.8%. To increase the accuracy of the spatial region estimation, the HDF algorithm removes the high-frequency signals hierarchically, and alters the parameters according to whether the IoT device moves. The accuracy of spatial region estimation using a raw RSSI, Kalman filter, and HDF are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of the HDF algorithm. The success rate and root mean square error (RMSE) of all regions are 0.538, 0.622, and 0.75, and 0.997, 0.812, and 0.5 when raw RSSI, a Kalman filter, and HDF are used, respectively. The HDF algorithm attains the best results in terms of the success rate and RMSE of spatial region estimation using HMM.

  • In this paper, we discuss the errors in selectivity estimation using the multilevel grid file (MLGF). We first demonstrate that the estimatio errors stem from the uniformity assumption that records are uniformly distributed in their belonging region represented by an entry in a level of an MLGF directory. Bsed on this demonstration, we then investigate five factors affecting the accuracy of estimation: (1) the data distribution in a region (2) the number of records stored in an MLFG (3) the page size, (4) the query region size, and (5) the level of an MLFG directory. Next we present the tendancy of estimation errors according to the change of values for each factor through experiments. The results show that the errors decrease when (1) the distribution of records in a region becomes closer to the uniform one, (2) the number of records in an MLFG increases, (3) the page size decreases, (4) the query region size increases, and (5) the level of an MLFG directory employed as data distribution information becomes lower. After the definition of the granule ratio, the core formula representing the basic relationship between the estimation errors and the above five factors, we finally examine the change of estimation errors according to the change of the values for the granule ratio through experiments. The results indicate that errors tend to be similar depending on the values for the granule ratio regardless of the various changes of the values for the five factors. factors affecting the accuracy of estimation:

  • In order to solve the problem of uncovered background region due to the region-due to the region-based motion estimation, this paper presents a new method which generates the uncovered region memory using motion estimation and shows the application of the algorithm for very low bit rate video coding. The proposed algorithm can be briefly described as follows it detects the changed region by using the information of FD(frame difference) and segmentation, and then as for only that region the backward motion estimation without transmission of shape information is done. Therefore, from only motion information the uncovered background region memory is generated and updated. The contents stored in the uncovered background region memory are referred whenever the uncovered region comes into existence. The regions with large prediction error are transformed and coded by using DCT. As results of simulation, the proposed algorithm shows the superior improvement in the subjective and objective image quality due to the remarkable reduction of transmission bits for prediction error.

  • This paper describes an image disparity estimation method using region-based stereo matching. Region-based disparity estimation yields a disparity map as the unit of segmented region. However it estimates disparity imprecisely because it not only has matching errors but also applies an identical way to disparity estimation, which does not consider each type of matched regions. To solve this problem, we proposes a disparity estimation method which considers the type of matched regions. That is, the proposed method classifies whole matched regions into a similar-matched region, a dissimilar-matched region, a false-matched region and a miss-matched region. We then performs proper disparity estimation for each type of matched regions. This method minimizes the error in estimating disparity which is caused by inaccurate matching and also improves the accuracy of disparity of the well-matched regions. The experimental results show the improved accuracy of the proposed method.

  • An optical flow-based motion estimation algorithm is proposed for video coding. The algorithm uses block-matching motion estimation with an adaptive search region. The search region is computed from motion fields that are estimated based on the optical flow. The algorithm is based on the fact that true block-motion vectors have similar characteristics to optical flow vectors. Thereafter, the search region is computed using these optical flow vectors that include spatial relationships. In conventional block matching, the search region is fixed. In contrast, in the new method, the appropriate size and location of the search region are both decided by the proposed algorithm. The results obtained using test images show that the proposed algorithm can produce a significant improvement compared with previous block-matching algorithms.

  • The recovering 3D image from 2D requires the depth information for each picture element. The manual creation of those 3D models is time consuming and expensive. The goal in this paper is to estimate the relative depth information of every region from single view image with camera translation. The paper is based on the fact that the motion of every point within image which taken from camera translation depends on the depth. Motion vector using full-search motion estimation is compensated for camera rotation and zooming. We have developed a framework that estimates the average frame depth by analyzing motion vector and then calculates relative depth of region to average frame depth. Simulation results show that the depth of region belongs to a near or far object is consistent accord with relative depth that man recognizes.

Segmented-region based disparity estimation yields a disparity map as the unit of segmented region. However, there is a problem that it estimates disparity imprecisely. The reason is that because it not only have matching errors but also apply an identical way to disparity estimation, which is not considered each type of matched regions. We then performs proper disparity estimation for each type of matched regions. This method minimizes the error in estimating disparity which is caused by inaccurate matching and also improves the accuracy of disparity of the well-matched regions. For the purpose of performance evaluations, we perform tests on a variety of scenes for synthetic, indoor and outdoor images. As a result of tests, we can obtain a dense disparity map which has the improved accuracy. The remarkable result is that the accuracy of disparity is also improved considerably for complex outdoor images which are barely treatable in the previous methods.

  • In speech signal processing, speech signal corrupted by noise should be enhanced to improve quality. Usually noise estimation methods need flexibility for variable environment. Noise profile is renewed on silence region to avoid effects of speech properties. So we have to preprocess finding voice region before noise estimation. However, if received signal does not have silence region, we cannot apply that method. In this paper, we proposed SNR estimation method for continuous speech signal. The waveform which is stationary region of voiced speech is very correlated by pitch period. So we can estimate the SNR by correlation of near waveform after dividing a frame for each pitch. For unvoiced speech signal, vocal track characteristic is reflected by noise, so we can estimate SNR by using spectral distance between spectrum of received signal and estimated vocal track. Lastly, energy of speech signal is mostly distributed on voiced region, so we can estimate SNR by the ratio of voiced region energy to unvoiced.
