A Method for Character Segmentation using MST(Minimum Spanning Tree) (MST를 이용한 문자 영역 분할 방법)

  • Conventional caption extraction methods use the difference between frames or color segmentation methods from the whole image. Because these methods depend heavily on heuristics, we should have a priori knowledge of the captions to be extracted. Also they are difficult to implement. In this paper, we propose a method that uses little heuristic and simplified algorithm. We use topographical features of characters to extract the character points and use MST(Minimum Spanning Tree) to extract the candidate regions for captions. Character regions are determined by testing several conditions and verifying those candidate regions. Experimental results show that the candidate region extraction rate is 100%, and the character region extraction rate is 98.2%. And then we can see the results that caption area in complex images is well extracted.

  • This paper dealt with an experiments on temperature vairation in the heat storage zone due to change of vertical location (height) of sink diffuser and flow extraction in small saltless solar pond ($0.5{\times}0.5{\times}1.0M$), and the honeycomb device for this experimental purpose consisted of one-tired, sealed, and air filled by honeycomb panels. As results of experiments, 1) The storage zone was formed under lower region below the honeycomb device. 2) The higher vertical location of sink diffuser was placed, the more mixing phenomenon increased in the pond at steady flow extraction. 3) The more flow extraction increased, the more mixing phenomenon decreased at constant heat exchanger and variable flow extraction.

  • Extracting the brain from magnetic resonance imaging head scans is an essential preprocessing step of which the accuracy greatly affects subsequent image analysis. The currently popular Brain Extraction Tool produces a brain mask which may be too smooth for practical use to reduce the accuracy. This paper presents a novel and indirect brain extraction method based on non-brain tissue segmentation. Based on ITK, the proposed method allows a non-brain contour by using region growing to match with the original image naturally and extract the brain tissue. Experiments on two set of MRI data and 2D brain image in horizontal plane and 3D brain model indicate successful extraction of brain tissue from a head.

A Study on High-Speed Extraction of Bar Code Region for Parcel Automatic Identification (소포 자동식별을 위한 바코드 관심영역 고속 추출에 관한 연구)

  • Conventional Systems for parcel sorting consist of two sequences as loading the parcel into conveyor belt system and post-code input. Using bar code information, the parcels to be recorded and managed are recognized. This paper describes a 32 $\times$ 32 sized mini-block inspection to extract bar code Region of Interest (ROI) from the line Charged Coupled Device (CCD) camera capturing image of moving parcel at 2m/sec speed. Firstly, the Min-Max distribution of the mini-block has been applied to discard the background of parcel and region of conveying belts from the image. Secondly, the diagonal inspection has been used for the extraction of letters and bar code region. Five horizontal line scanning detects the number of edges and sizes and ROI has been acquired from the detection. The wrong detected area has been deleted by the comparison of group size from labeling processes. To correct excluded bar code region in mini-block processes and for analysis of bar code information, the extracted ROI 8 boundary points and decline distribution have been used with central axis line adjustment. The ROI extraction and central axis creation have become enable within 60~80msec, and the accuracy has been accomplished over 99.44 percentage.

Adaptive Segmentation Approach to Extraction of Road and Sky Regions (도로와 하늘 영역 추출을 위한 적응적 분할 방법)

  • In Vision-based Intelligent Transportation System(ITS) the segmentation of road region is a very basic functionality. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a region segmentation method using adaptive pattern extraction technique to segment road regions and sky regions from original images. The proposed method consists of three steps; firstly we perform the initial segmentation using Mean Shift algorithm, the second step is the candidate region selection based on a static-pattern matching technique and the third is the region growing step based on a dynamic-pattern matching technique. The proposed method is able to get more reliable results than the classic region segmentation methods which are based on existing split and merge strategy. The reason for the better results is because we use adaptive patterns extracted from neighboring regions of the current segmented regions to measure the region homogeneity. To evaluate advantages of the proposed method, we compared our method with the classical pattern matching method using static-patterns. In the experiments, the proposed method was proved that the better performance of 8.12% was achieved when we used adaptive patterns instead of static-patterns. We expect that the proposed method can segment road and sky areas in the various road condition in stable, and take an important role in the vision-based ITS applications.

Planar Region Extraction for Visual Navigation using Stereo Cameras

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to extract valid planar regions from stereo images for visual navigation of mobile robots. The algorithm is based on the difference image between the stereo images obtained by applying Homography matrix between stereo cameras. Illegal planar regions are filtered out by the use of labeling of the difference images and filtering of invalid blobs using the size of each blob. Also, illegal large planar regions such as walls are removed by adopting a weighted low-pass filtering of the difference image using the past difference images. The algorithms are experimented successfully by the use of stereo camera system built in a mobile robot and a PC-based real-time vision system.

Recognition of Car License Plates using Morphological Information and SOM Algorithm

  • In this paper, we propose the recognition system of a license plate using SOM algorithm. The recognition of license plate was investigated by means of the SOM algorithm. The morphological information of horizontal and vertical edges was used to extract a plate region from a car image. In addition, the 4-direction contour tracking algorithm was applied to extract the specific area, which includes characters from an extracted plate area. Therefore, we proposed how to extract license plate region using morphological information and how to recognize the character string using SOM algorithm. In this paper, 50 car images were tested. The extraction rate obtained by the proposed extraction method showed better results than that from the color information of RGB and HSI, respectively. And the license plate recognition using SOM algorithm was very efficient.

  • This paper presents an algorithm that extracts road lane's specific information by using HSI color information and performance enhancement of lane detection base on vision processing of drive assist. As a preprocessing for high speed lane detection, the optimal extraction of region of interest for lane boundary(ROI-LB) can be processed to reduction of detection region in which high speed processing is enabled and it also increases reliabilities by deleting edges those are misrecognized. Road lane is extracted with simultaneous processing of noise reduction and edge enhancement using the Laplacian filter, the reliability of feature extraction can be increased for various road lane patterns. Since noise can be removed by using saturation and brightness of HSI color model. Also it searches for the road lane's color information and extracts characteristics. The real road experimental results are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A Study on the Edge Extraction and Segmentation of Range Images (거리 영상의 에지 추출 및 영역화에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we investigate edge extraction and segmentation of range images. We first discuss problems that arise in the conventional region-based segmentation methods and edge-based ones using principal curvatures, then we propose an edge-based algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, we extract edge contours by using the Gaussian filter and directional derivatives, and segment a range image based on extracted edge contours, Also we present the problem that arises in the conventional thresholding, then we propose a new threshold selection method. To solve the problem that local maxima of the first- and second- order derivatives gather near step edges, we first find closed roof edge contours, fill the step edge region, and finally thin edge boundaries. Computer simulations with several range images show that the proposed method yields better performance than the conventional one.

  • As the need of automatized system has been increased recently together with the development of industrial and military technologies, the adaptive real-time target detection technologies that can be embedded on vehicles, planes, ships, robots and so on, are hgihly demanded. Accordingly, this paper proposes a novel approach to detect and segment the moving targets using the binary phase extraction joint transform correlator (BPEJTC), the advanced image subtraction filter and convex hull processing. The BPEJTC which was used as a target detection unit mainly for target tracking compensating the camera movement. The target region has been detected by processing the successful three frames using the advanced image subtraction filter, and has become more accurate by applying the developed convex hull filter. As shown by some experimental results, it is expected that the proposed approaches for compensation of the camera movement and segmentationof of target region, can be used for th emissile guiddance, aero surveillance, automatic inspectin system as well as the target detection unit of automatic target recognition system that request adaptive real-time processing.
