  • The conventional refrigeration system is composed of a compressor, condenser, receiver, expansion valve or capillary tube, and an evaporator. The refrigeration system used in this study has additional expansion valve and evaporator along with an evaporation pressure regulator(EPR) at the exit side of the evaporator. The two evaporators can be operated at different temperatures according to the opening of the EPR. The experimental results obtained using the refrigeration system with parallel control of evaporation pressure are presented and the performance analysis of the refrigeration system with two evaporators is conducted.

  • The geometric size and the refrigeration capacity of a refrigeration system are strongly dependent on the capacity of heat exchanger, which is one of the key design parameters. In this paper, the effect of the capacities of heat exchangers on the performance of a real refrigeration system operated in a vapor compression cycle was analyzed by the numerical simulation. From the results, the conditions that gave the maximum values of the refrigeration capacity or COP were respectively determined as a function of the capacities of condenser and evaporator under the given ambient and operating condition.

  • In this paper, cycle performance analysis of cascade refrigeration system using alternative FREON refrigerants are presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooled and superheated degree, and evaporating and condensing temperature, temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger in cascade refrigeration system. The COP of cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing subcooled degree, but there is no significant changes with the increasing superheated degree. The COP of cascade refrigeration system depends on evaporating and condensing temperatures of cascade heat exchanger. Therefore, subcooled degree, evaporating and condensing temperature of cascade heat exchanger using alternative FREON refrigerants have an effect on the COP of this system. In this paper, COP of cascade refrigeration system using R23 for low temperature system and R507A for high temperature system is higher 8 ~ 29 % than using R13 for low temperature system and R22 for high temperature system.

  • Refrigeration and air-conditioning equipments are indispensable products in this civilized society. However, discharged refrigerants used in the equipments and exhausted carbon dioxide to drive the refrigeration and air-conditioning equipments are related to serious environmental problems and energy problems. Especially, the destroyed ozonosphere by the discharged refrigerants and the increased normal temperature by carbon dioxide and fluorocarbon refrigerants (green house gases) are sounded as serious global problems. For alleviating these problems, environmental-friendly refrigeration and air-conditioning equipments must be developed and will spread soon. To develop new equipment, a suitable refrigerant for each usage must be presented. In this paper, the current state of refrigerants was introduced. And, thermophysical properties of the refrigerants were introduced briefly. From the properties, the refrigerants and refrigeration cycles are promising to be used in the future, were proposed

  • This paper reviews the magnetic refrigeration technology that is a novel cooling method utilizing magnetic field to obtain low temperature. The key component of the refrigeration is a novel magnetic refrigerant which should possess sufficiently large magneto-caloric effect so that a pseudo-Carnot magnetic refrigeration cycle can cover reasonably large temperature span. Otherwise, a regenerative concept should be employed to expand the temperature span of the refrigeration cycle. There is a growing interest in magnetic refrigeration as a viable refrigeration technology not only for cryogenics as well as room temperature range. This paper covers historical developments, fundamental concepts, key components, application classification, and recent research trend of magnetic refrigerators.

  • In order to obtain a low evaporation temperature ranging from $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}-50^{\circ}C$, a cascade refrigeration system and two-stage compression one-stage expansion refrigeration system is required. However, the research results of performance comparison of these refrigeration system are very scarce. This paper were compared the performance characteristics of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system and R404A two-stage compression refrigeration system. The COP of R404A two-stage compression refrigeration system is about 36~57% greater than that of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system in the range of evaporation temperature of $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}-50^{\circ}C$. But R404A two-stage compression refrigeration system is unstable because COP is significantly changed when evaporating temperature and compressor efficiency decreased. In particular, when compressor efficiency decreased, COP is significantly decreased. In this case, not efficient for long-term use. Whereas R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system using natural refrigerants. Therefore, it is environmentally friendly. And this system is high-efficiency refrigeration system. The reason it can be configured by selecting the suitable refrigerant at high-temperature side and low-temperature side. From the above results, select the appropriate low temperature refrigeration system by considering the environmental and performance aspects.

  • A refrigerant-subcooling refrigeration system consisted of a typical single vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, a subcooler, and an ice storage tank. The degree of subcooling at the exit of the condenser can be increased by the heat exchange between the subcooler and the ice storage tank. The cold heat in the ice storage tank was stored by using the refrigeration cycle during night time and then used to absorb the heat from the subcooler during daytime. The performance of the refrigerant-subcooling refrigeration system was measured by varying the degree of subcooling. In addition, the performance characteristics of the present system were compared with those of a conventional refrigeration system. The mass flow rate of the present system was higher than that of the conventional system due to the increase in the degree of subcooling. Generally, the refrigerant-subcooling system showed superior performance to the conventional refrigeration system.

  • Recently, Free cooling system usage has increased at many buildings in intermediate and winter season. Free cooling system is used to reduce the energy consumption of refrigeration in that season. Free cooling system is refrigeration system using cooled water. In general, this system is applied with the building having refrigeration load at all time such as a data center. In this study, energy consumption of a data center taking free cooling system in Ulsan was evaluated by the software HYSYS. the main result is as in the following : free cooling system is effective from January to April and from November to December. In case of Ulsna in 2013, using free coolng system is able to spend refrigeration energy of about 15% less than existing system. According to this result, it is appropriated that free cooling system is used in building having refrigeration load at all time such as data center.

  • A performance analysis of refrigeration system using the HFC-134a and scroll compressor is performed numerically. The refrigeration system mainly consists of various standard components such as heat exchanger, compressor, and expansion device. The model for heat exchanger performance is based on a tube-by-tube method which is analyzed separately by considering the cross-flow heat transfer with the outdoor air flow and pressure drop. Compressor is used the scroll-type compressor which has many merits such as high efficiency, low noise and vibration, and small in size. Short-tube is included as an expansion device. Vapour and liquid line are also considered for the performance analysis of refrigeration system. Using the modeling of various components of refrigeration system, a performance comparison of CFC-12 and HFC-134a is performed numerically for the various outdoor air temperature and various values of short-tube diameter. As the results of this study, the refrigeration system performance decreases as the outdoor air temperature increases. And the optimum short-tube diameter based on COP is 1.37mm for this system.
