A parametric study on the scroll wrap configuration factors of a $CO_2$scroll compressor for heat pump water heater has been carried out. Since there are 7 scroll wrap design parameters and 5 equations relating them, two of the design parameters can be selected as independent parameters. In this study, the wrap thickness and orbiting radius are chosen as independent ones. Computer simulation program has been used to estimate the compressor performance at various combinations of the scroll wrap design parameters. It has been found that there exists optimum combination of the wrap parameters for the highest compressor performance over analyzed ranges of the design parameters.
A portion of oil for lubrication of compressor flows together with refrigerant in the refrigeration system. If the oil discharge from a compressor is increased in the refrigeration system, not only pressure drop is increased in other components, such as evaporator and gas cooler, but also heat transfer coefficient in the heat exchangers is decreased. Oil discharge rate from a compressor may strongly depend on operating conditions of a compressor. In this study, one stage single rotary compressor is employed for measuring oil circulation ratio(OCR). Carbon dioxide and PAG oil are used as refrigerant and lubricant. Using a U-tube densimeter, mixture density is measured. Oil circulation ratio(OCR) can be estimated by measured mixture density. The results obtained indicate that the oil circulation ratio(OCR) is increased as the suction temperature or compressor operating frequency is increased. Oil circulation ratio(OCR) correlation of the compressor is also suggested.
In this paper, a rolling piston rotary compressor having a combined vane and roller unit has been introduced. In a conventional rotary compressor, sliding motion takes place between the vane nose and roller. By combining the vane and the roller in one unit, gas leakage through a clearance between the vane nose and the roller can be eliminated, and the frictional loss between them can also be reduced to almost nought. Compressor model with the combined vane and roller has been fabricated and tested in a compressor calorimeter and computer simulation program has been developed to confirm merits of the new mechanism. In a test, cooling capacity has been found to be increased by 1.4%, and the compressor input decreased by 0.3%, resulting in 1.7% increased in EER. Simulation program confirmed the calorimeter test results and the merits of the new model as mentioned above.
As one way of design optimization of two-stage two-cylinder rotary compressor used for R410A heat pump application, displacement volume ratio, being defined by the ratio of the second stage cylinder volume to that of the first stage, has been varied and its effect on the compressor performance has been investigated by a computer simulation program. For simplicity, only the cylinder height of the second stage was varied to change the volume ratio. With increasing the volume ratio in the range of VR=$0.55{\sim}0.9$, volumetric efficiency increased monotonically, but adiabatic efficiency showed a maximum at around VR=0.6. Mechanical efficiency was little influenced by the volumetric ratio. As a consequence, maximum improvement of the compressor performance was found at around VR=0.7. Compared to a one-stage two-cylinder rotary compressor with about the same cooling capacity, COP improvement was about 6.96%.
For a $CO_2$ one-stage twin rotary compressor, a T-shaped suction port was used to effectively supply the suction gas stream into two individual suction chambers of the twin cylinders. Suction gas pulsations were observed in the pressure sensor signals and these were simulated by using the acoustic modeling of Helmholz resonators in parallel. The module of acoustic modeling was combined to a computer simulation program for the compressor performance. Validation of the simulation program has been carried out for a bench model compressor in a compressor calorimeter. Cooling capacity and the compressor input power were reasonably well compared between the simulation and the calorimeter test. Particularly, good agreement on P-V diagram between the simulation and the test was obtained.
For a hermetic reciprocating compressor, it has been known that the gas pulsation in the suction line affects the compressor performance, and suction muffler design has been focused on both of noise reduction and minimum pressure drop across the muffler. Some studies have been carried out on the mutual interaction between the gas pulsation and the cylinder pressure to investigate some supercharging effects, but their efforts were limited on rather simple geometries. In this paper, interaction of the gas pulsation in the compressor suction line with cylinder pressure via suction valve motion has been calculated; for the gas pulsation analysis, modeling of Helmholtz resonators in series was used, and for cylinder pressure calculation, energy equations was set up for the gas inside the cylinder. For demonstration of this calculation method, four different types of suction line configurations for a hermetic reciprocating compressor were compared in terms of compressor performance and gas pulsation level.
Performance of a variable-speed, roller-type vane compressor was evaluated at low evaporating temperature. First, an experimental investigation was conducted to examine the performance variation as functions of both outdoor temperature and rotating speed. For this purpose, a typical heat pump was implemented as a test apparatus to measure mass flow rate and power input. Secondly, computational investigations corresponding to the heat pump test conditions were performed to predict compressor performance using ORNL Map-Based compressor model. Results obtained from the heat-pump experiments showed that both mass flow rate and power consumption were sensitively dependent on both evaporating temperature and compressor speed as was predicted from the computational results. From the comparisons of both experimental and computational results, it was well recognized that the ORNL model was subjected to larger error in the accuracy of prediction as outdoor temperature decreased. When the outdoor temperature was above $-5^{\cire}C$, errors of predicted values corresponding to both mass flow rate and power consumption were estimated as $\pm$10% and $\pm$ 15%, respectively. Finally, it is suggested that the ORNL model needs to be re-evaluated if compressor map data tested below $-5^{\cire}C$(in evaporating temperature) are available.
An experimental study has been performed to investigate the correlation on compressor discharge temperature of system A/C in heating mode. Indoor and outdoor temperatures, the heating capacity, compressor discharge temperature and loading time are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The system is controlled by applying the scroll compressor, which Is operated by PWM valve and loading duty. With increasing outdoor temperature, the heating capacity increases, With increasing indoor temperature, it decreases. Also, with increasing loading duty the heating capacity increases. According to the increase in outdoor temperature and loading duty, compressor discharge temperature increases. From these experimental data, the correlation on compressor discharge temperature is proposed. It is expressed as a function of indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, and loading duty. The correlation obtained from the present study is agreed with the experimental data within $2^{\circ}C$.
The major cause of compressor failure is the decrease of oil viscosity due to floodback. In most previous researches on the compressor reliability, the relationship between oil circulation rate and performance or oil viscosity has been studied. Another research topic is flow visualization by using a sight glass on the bottom of a compressor sump area and accumulator. Both oil film thickness and oil level through the sight glass should be assessed for compressor reliability if the oil content of the mixture is small and low viscosity raise poor lubrication of pump bearing. In this study, the compressor reliability was assessed by measuring the viscosity of the mixture and calculating oil film thickness. The analysis of the relationship between bottom shell super heat and oil film thickness at heating operation was peformed. It is concluded that bottom shell superheat does not perfectly stand for the mixture's behavior for a low ambient heating operation and oil film thickness can give more detailed and direct criteria for compressor reliability.

The effects of casing shapes on the performance and the interaction between an impeller and a casing in a small-sized centrifugal compressor are investigated. Especially, numerical analyses are conducted for the centrifugal compressor with both a circular casing and a volute one. The optimum design for each element (i.e., impeller, diffuser and casing) is important to develop an efficient and compact compressor using alternative refrigerant as working fluids. Typical rotating speed of the compressor is in the range of 40,000∼45,000 rpm. The impeller has backswept blades due to tip clearance and a vane diffuser has wedge type. In order to predict the flow pattern inside an entire impeller, vaneless diffuser and casing, calculations with multiple frames of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For computations of compressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are employed. To evaluate the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure recovery and loss coefficients are obtained for various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load. The static pressure around the casing and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor are measured for the circular casing.
