  • Nonflammable mixtures of flammable and nonflammable refrigerants are possible as substitute refrigerants for use in domestic heat pumps and refrigerators. Refrigerant leakage from such a system is of paramount concern since it is possible that the resulting mixture composition remaining in system will reside in the flammable range. This paper presents a simulation of a leakage process of refrigerant mixtures. Idealized cases of isothermal leakage process are considered in this study representing a slow leak. Simulation is performed for selected composition of binary and ternary refrigerant mixture; R-32/134a and R-32/125/134a. Mixture compositions with respect to percentage leak of original charge are presented. In isothermal leakage process, both vapor and liquid compositions of more volatile refrigerant decrease during vapor and liquid leak, but the total composition of this component decreases during vapor leak and increases during liquid leak. Vapor and liquid compositions are determined depending on the vapor-liquid equilibrium relation of the refrigerant mixture. The refrigerant mixture left in the system can go to a nonflammable direction relying on which component in the mixture is flammable.

  • CFC-12 used in mobile air conditioning(MAC) system has been replaced by R-134a, a type of HFC refrigerant, from 1991 to 1994. R-134a has since been widely used as a refrigerant of a mobile air conditioner. However, it is one of the six main green house gases listed in Kyoto Protocol, which makes it imperative to regulate its emission and develop alternative refrigerants. In this study, the concentration of leaked R-134a was measured using VT(Variable Temperature) shed and Running loss test shed to analyze the level of air conditioner refrigerant leaked in a vehicle. According to the analysis of the concentration of R-134a leaked from a vehicle parked, annual leakage amount of R-134a was in the range of 6.46~13.28 g/yr. The figure was similar with the leakage from the mobile air conditioning system currently used. In a study using the same vehicle model, a vehicle equipped with dual evaporation system had a higher leakage rate of refrigerant than a vehicle with a single evaporation system. It appears that the added fittings and joints of the dual evaporator system led to higher leakage rate. Besides, the analysis of the change in R-134a concentration under various car speed found that more refrigerant leaked under high speed(100km/hr) and but the volume of the wind did not affect to the variation of refrigerant leakage.

  • In this study, the overall performance and the effect of the tip leakage flow of the centrifugal compressor with a refrigerant HFC-l34a were numerically studied using CFX-TASCflow. To study the effect of the tip leakage flow, the numerical study of the overall performance of HFC-l34a centrifugal compressor with a cascade diffuser was preceded and compared with the experimental result. Six different tip clearances were used to consider the influence of the tip clearance on the performance. The tip leakage flow was illustrated for qualitative discussion. The results obtained in this study can be applied to the determination of the cold clearance.

  • Fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. An experimental study has been performed on fault detection and diagnosis method for a water chiller. Bayes classifier, which is one of classical pattern classifiers, is adopted in deciding whether fault occurred or not. Failure modes in this study include refrigerant leakage, decrease in mass flow rate of the chilled water and cooling water, and sensor error of the cooling water inlet temperature. It is possible to detect and diagnose faults in this study by adopting FDD algorithm using only four parameters(compressor outlet temperature, chilled water inlet temperature, cooling water outlet temperature and compressor power consumption). Refrigerant leakage failure is detected at 20% of refrigerant leakage. When mass flow rate of the chilled and cooling water decrease more than 8% or 12%, FDD algorithm can detect the faults. The deviation of temperature sensor over $0.6^{\circ}C$ can be detected as fault.

  • This paper is to analyze and study the failure examples of refrigerant gas in automotive air conditioner. The first example, the air conditioner compressor continually operated that the refrigerant was leaked in air conditioner system. By lubrication shortage, the piston was partially sticked on cylinder of air conditioner compressor inner part. This was caused the phenomenon of engine operation trouble by load increasing with engine rpm variation during engine running. The second example, it sought the fact that the air conditioner refrigerant gas was leaked from air conditioner compressor to condenser high pressure pipe toward rear air conditioner checking with the lines of air conditioner. The third example, the refrigerant gas of air conditioner found that was leaked imperceptible from condenser inner by crack that was generated on the fins of air conditioner condenser. Therefore, the air conditioner system that maintain the air conditioner by decreasing the in-car temperature must meticulously manage to not leak the air conditioner refrigerant gas.

  • The fault diagnosis technologies may be applied in order to decrease the energy consumption and the maintenance cost of an air-conditioning system. In this paper, a fault diagnosis algorithm was developed by using a neural no-fault model and a dual fuzzy logic. Five different faults, such as the compressor valve leakage, the liquid line blockage, the condenser fouling, the evaporator fouling, and the refrigerant leakage of an air-conditioning system, were considered. The fault diagnosis algorithm was tested by using a fault simulation facility. Test results showed that the algorithm developed for this study was effective to detect and diagnose various faults. Therefore, this algorithm may be practically used for the fault diagnosis of an air-conditioning system.

  • In general, it is known that the portion of leakage loss is more than 20 % of total loss in scroll compressor. So far many studies have been done to improve the leakage problem and volumetric efficiency. In order to do this it is necessary that the leakage is exactly evaluated for conventional scroll model. Almost all studies that have been done were assumed that the clearance remains constant while operating. But in actual operating conditions, scroll wrap is deformed due to elevated refrigerant gas temperature. And this makes the leakage clearance change, so the leakage mass flow and the volumetric efficiency are also changed. In this study we assumed the steady state operating condition and obtain the average temperature and convection heat transfer coefficient in terms of involute angle. With these results, using finite element method we analyzed the heat transfer of scroll wrap, then did thermal deformation analysis. Then we obtain the leakage clearance and do the leakage and volumetric efficiency analysis. Compared with undeformed feature, we examine the effect of the thermal deformation on the leakage. The results say that the leakage mass flow for the case of considering thermal deformation is less than that for the unconsidered one, and this means that the leakage clearance is reduced due to thermal deformation.

  • In the present study, the compression process in scroll compressor was simulated in consideration of flow leakage and heat transfer. Tangential and radial leakages of the refrigerant between the scrolls were considered as nozzle flow. The experiment was first conducted with a scroll compressor for automobile air conditioning system and R134a as a refrigerant. Temperature and pressure were measured at the suction and discharge ports of the compressor to determine the thermodynamic states of the refrigerant flow. Temperature distribution of the scroll with the involute angle was also measured by thermocouples that were installed inside the scroll. Measured temperature distribution was compared with the numerical results. From this result, the thermal effect of mechanical contact was found to be important in heat transfer of the compression process.

  • Two different types of algorithms were developed and applied to detect the partial faults of a multi-type air conditioning system. Partial faults include the compressor valve leakage, the refrigerant pipe partial blockage, the condenser fouling, and the evaporator fouling. The first algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and parity relations, and the second algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network. Test results showed that the second algorithm was better than the first algorithm in detecting various partial faults of the system. Therefore, the algorithm developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network may be used for the detection of partial faults of an air-conditioning system.
