An experimental investigation was conducted to study two-phase flow distribution in a T-type distributor of slit fin-and-tube heat exchanger using R22. A comparison was made between the predictions by previously proposed tube-by-tube method and experimental data for the heat transfer rate of evaporator. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of saturation temperature of 5$^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rate varying from 0.6 to 1.2kg/min. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature of 27$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 50% and air velocity varying from 0.63 to 1.71㎧. Experiment show that air velocity increased by 85.2% is need for T-type distributor with four outlet branches than that of two outlet branches under the superheat of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted in air-side pressure drop increase of 130% for T-type distributor with four outlet branches as compared to two outlet branches.
The heat capacity and pressure drop of $CO_2$ and coolant in a multi-tube type gas cooler were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a $CO_2$ compressor, a mass flow meter, an evaporator and a multi-tube type gas cooler as a test section. The mass flowrate of $CO_2$ and coolant were varied from 0.06 to 0.075 [kg/s], respectively and the cooling pressure of gas cooler were from 8 to 10 [MPa]. The heat capacity of $CO_2$ in the test section is increased with the increment in mass flowrate of coolant, the cooling pressure and mass flowrate of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ is decreased with the decrease in mass flowrate of coolant and $CO_2$, but decreased with increase in cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The heat capacity of $CO_2$ per unit heat transfer area of gas cooler is greatly high. Therefore, in case of the application of $CO_2$ at the multi-tube type gas cooler, it is expected to carry out the high-efficiency, high-performance and compactness of gas cooler.

The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchangers with R-410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find the optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchangers by parametric analysis for the key parameters. The key parameters are number of tube row, number of tube pipe, fin pitch and transverse tube pitch. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R-410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant. This study determines the heat exchanger size, air side/refrigerant side pressure drop and overall heat transfer coefficient. Optimum design conditions for the key parameters are also determined by the parametric analysis. The results show that number of rows and pipes, fin pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger size. It is also found that the tube length of the louver fin is $17{\sim}30%$ shorter than that of the plate fin.
Refrigerant mixtures provide an opportunity to adjust their properties to fit design criteria and a possibility to create new blends that can improve heat transfer characteristics. Therefore, mixture of $CO_2$ and propane is chosen which may be a promising refrigerant and has good environmental compatibility. This paper presents measured heat transfer coefficient data during evaporation process of $CO_2$/propane mixtures flowing upward in vertical smooth and. micro-fin tubes. Smooth and micro-fin tubes with outer diameters of 5 mm and length of 1.44in were selected as test tubes. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to $656kg/m^{2}s$, inlet temperatures of -10 to $30^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and for several compositions (75/25, 50/50, 25/75 wt%). Among $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures, the heat transfer characteristics are much better than that of any compositions when the composition is 75/25 (wt%).
In order to develop the compact and flexible heat exchangers, we made the helically coiled heat exchangers. They can be manufactured with small diameter copper tubes without the need for fins; inner diameter=1.0 mm, straight tube length=1.5 m. The experiments were carried out with the following conditions; evaporation pressure=0.6 MPa, air velocity=0.7 ∼ 1.7 m/s, and working fluid=R-22. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of heat exchangers were experimented according to the air velocity. The results of heat transfer coefficient show a 35% beneficial increase fur these heat exchangers over the other covered fin-tube heat exchangers. A cooling capacity of about 3 kW was obtained with an air velocity of 1.5 m/s. The distribution header has also been designed fur efficient distribution of refrigerant flow.
Pressure drops were measured for the flow boiling process within horizontal rectangular channels. The gap between the upper and the lower plates of each channel ranges from 0.4 to 2mm while the channel width being fixed to 20mm. Refrigerant 113 was used as the test fluid. The mass flux ranges from 50 to 200kg/㎡s and the channel walls were uniformly heated up to 15kW/㎡. The quality range covers from 0.15 to 0.75. The present experimental conditions coincide with the operating conditions of compact heat exchangers in which the liquid and gas flows are laminar and turbulent. The measured results were well represented by the two-phase frictional multiplier of Lee (2001) which has been developed for air-water two-phase flows within the deviation of $\pm$20%.
In order to investigate the effects of PAG oil concentration on heat transfer performance and pressure drop during gas cooling process of $CO_2$, the experiments on fin-tube heat exchanger of $CO_2$ heat pump were performed. The experimental apparatus consists of a gas cooler, a heater, a chiller, a mass flow meter, a pump and measurement system. Experiments were conducted in various experimental conditions, which were inlet temperature($110^{\circ}C$), mass flow rates (50, 55, 60, 65, 70 g/s) and PAG oil concentration(0 to 2.6 wt%). Heat transfer rate decreased with the increase of the oil concentration and the decrease of inlet pressure. And pressure drop increased with the increase of the oil concentration and mass flow rate of refrigerant. The COP reduction by deterioration of gas cooler performance with oil concentration was analyzed. When inlet pressure of gas cooler is 100 bar, the COP reduction was estimated by 6% under 1 wt% of oil concentration.
This work studies for heat transfer and pressure drop performance of integral inner and outer fin tubes, designed to enhance the heat transfer performance of smooth tubes for in recipro and turbo refrigerator or high performance compact heat exchangers. Eight different inner spiral fin copper tubes with integral fin at outside surfaces were employed to improve boiling heat transfer coeffcient. For comparison, tests were made using a plain tube having the inside diameter and an outside diameter equal to that at the root of the fins for the finned tubes. Pool boiling heat transfer is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at a saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface heated by hot water. The refrigerant R11 ($CFCl_3$) was used at a pressure of $P_s=1bar$ as a convenient test fluid with a boiling temperature of $T_s=23.6^{\circ}C$. The observed heat transfer enhancement of boiling for finned tubes significantly exceeded that to be expected on grounds of increased area. The maximum Vapor - side enhancement(i.e., vapor - side heat transfer coefficient of finned tube/vapor - side coefficient for plain tube) was found to be around 4 at 1299fpm - 30grooves tube.
Recently, micro fin tube is widely used to heat exchanger for high performance. And, as the alternative refrigerants for R-22, hydrocarbons such as R-290, R-600 and R-600a are very promising because of their low GWP and ODP. Thus, R-290 was used as working fluid in this study. Most design of heat exchanger had been based on heat transfer characteristics of pure refrigerant although refrigerant oil exists in the refrigeration cycles. So, the influence of oil on heat transfer characteristics have to be considered for investigating exact evaporation heat transfer characteristics. But, this is an unresolved problem of refrigeration heat transfer. Therefore the influence of the refrigeration oil to the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of R-290 were conducted in a horizontal micro tin tube. The mineral oil was used as refrigeration oil. The experimental apparatus consisted of a basic refrigeration cycle and a system for oil concentration measurement. Test conditions are as the follows; evaporation temperature $5^{\circ}C$, mass velocity 100 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux 10 $kW/m^2$, oil concentration 0, 1.3, 3.3, 5.7 wt.%, and quality $0.07{\sim}1.0$. When refrigeration oil was entered, oil foaming was observed at the low quality region. And, very small bubbles were observed as quality was increased. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient increased as the concentration of refrigeration oil increased to 5 wt.%.. The performance index of heat exchanger was the highest near 3.3 wt.%.
The important problems from the point of view of preventing global warming are to save the power consumption of automotive air-conditioning systems and reduce the refrigerant amount filled. To achieve such requirements, integral receiver/dryer (R/D) condensers were developed recently. Typical integral R/D condensers have extra headers that play the role of R/D. Except an extra header and somewhat complex tube array resulting from the extra header, the most integral R/D condensers have almost the same specification that tube has multi channels, fin has louvers, flow in tube is parallel, etc. When integral condensers are applied, it is known that the refrigerating effect increases, resulting from the increase of subcooling degree in condenser, and the refrigerant amount used saves. In spite of several merits, integral condensers have not been applied a lot. That is why there is an uncertainty in performance, using integral condensers. The objective of this study is to theoretically optimize the tube array in an integral R/D condenser that is really being applied to some vehicles. The tube array has a great effect on the performance of the integral condenser as well as common ones. Through computer simulation, we could see that the tube array, 14-6-3-5-3-4, in the same condenser was the best, comparing heat release rate, pressure drop, etc. to the real array, 17-5-3-3-2-5. It should be noted that the optimization is based on the condenser performance only.
