With high temporal resolution, four times receiving during a day, MODIS images from Terra and Aqua satellites provide several advantages for monitoring spacious land. Especially, diverse MODIS products related to land, atmosphere, and ocean have been provided with radiance MODIS images. The products such as surface reflectance, NDVI, cloud mask, aerosol etc. are based on theoretical algorithms developed in academic areas. Comparing with other change detection studies mainly using the vegetation index, this study investigated temporal surface reflectance of landcovers for five years from 2004 to 2008. The near infrared (NIR) reflectance in urbanized and burned areas showed considerable difference before and after events. The specific characteristics of surface reflectance temporal profiles are possibly useful for the detection of landcover changes and classification.

It is very important to optimize the reflectance of incident light in solar modules for improving output power and reducing loss of cell-to-module (CTM). It is assumed that a higher reflectance backsheet may improve optical efficiency. However how much output power is related to optical properties by reflectance property of backsheets have not been revealed clearly yet. A total of 3 types of industrial backsheets with 3 type of industrial encapsulants (EVA or POE) were analyzed as fabricated mini modules used shingled cells. According to the type of backsheets, the difference between the highest and lowest average reflectance in the range of 400 nm to 1200 nm was found to be 13.08% by UV-visible spectroscopy. Also, when using the same encapsulant, the maximum gap value of the output power increase was measured by about 3.755 mW% (166.02 mW). The correlation between reflectance and output power was experimentally found by measuring the output property of the fabricated shingled mini modules.

Pine wilt disease has known as a serious forest disease in East Asia such as Japan, Korea and China. Fumigation and burning are considered as best way to treat infected tree at early detection. For investigate spectral reflectance characteristics of infected trees, periodic measurement has been done in both infected and non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees' reflectance (400 nm~2,500 nm wavelength) are detected from June to October with GER3700 spectrometer. Noise of reflectance data was corrected using cubic spline interpolation method. Reflectance was changed in most of infected trees with ranges Red (600 nm~700 nm) and Middle Infrared (1,400 nm~1,500 nm) within two months after injected by Pine Wood nematode (PWN), but there was no differences in non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees were compared statistically in each period. As a result, we found that a statistically significant difference was occurred at Red and Middle Infrared (MIR) 2 months after injection (p<0.05), however, no significant difference in near infrared (p>0.05). Therefore, the early detection of infested pine trees by PWN may possible through detecting the change of spectral reflectance at red and MIR.
The optical properties of PDP, such as the transmittance and reflectance, were analyzed with 3D optical code. Three different ITO-less structures in the front panel are examined. In the assembled panel study, the test 1 structure shows 16.6% and 10.2% higher reflectance than the structures of tests 2 and 3, respectively. In order to check the validation of the simulation result, three 7.5-inch test panels having the same geometry and property are fabricated as simulation models. The calculated reflective properties are compared to the measured data from real panels. The relative difference extracted from the simulation and measurement methods is less than 4.9% and are well matched.

Asian dust aerosol layer of 4-6 km altitude accompanied by low clouds was observed by LIDAR and sky-radiometer in Tokyo urban area on April 10, 2001. To synthesize the top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance, radiative transfer simulation conducted assuming aerosol/cloud vertical structure and aerosol size distribution that were modeled after the ground observations. The refractive index of Asian dust is derived from a laboratory measurement of sampled Chinese soil particles. The synthesized TOA reflectance is compared to the SeaWiFS-derived one sampled at the low cloud pixels whose airmass is the same as the one passed at the observation site. While the two TOA reflectances compare generally well with few percent difference in reflectance, possible sources of the discrepancy are discussed.
Research and technological advances in the field of remote sensing have greatly enhanced the ability to detect and quantify physical and biological stresses that affect the productivity of agricultural crops. Reflectance in specific visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have proved useful in detection of nutrient deficiencies. Especially crop canopy sensors as a ground remote sensing measure the amount of light reflected from nearby surfaces such as leaf tissue or soil and is in contrast to aircraft or satellite platforms that generate photographs or various types of digital images. Multi-spectral vegetation indices derived from crop canopy reflectance in relatively wide wave band can be used to monitor the growth response of plants in relation to environmental factors. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), where NDVI = (NIR-Red)/(NIR+Red), was originally proposed as a means of estimating green biomass. The basis of this relationship is the strong absorption (low reflectance) of red light by chlorophyll and low absorption (high reflectance and transmittance) in the near infrared (NIR) by green leaves. Thereafter many researchers have proposed the other indices for assessing crop vegetation due to confounding soil background effects in the measurement. The green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI), where the green band is substituted for the red band in the NDVI equation, was proved to be more useful for assessing canopy variation in green crop biomass related to nitrogen fertility in soils. Consequently ground remote sensing as a non destructive real-time assessment of nitrogen status in plant was thought to be useful tool for site specific crop nitrogen management providing both spatial and temporal information.

The tools and techniques for measuring the spectral distribution of light emitted by, transmitted by, or reflected from food surfaces are described for determining the extent to which original natural color is preserved in processing and subsequent storage of foods. Color differences may be evaluated indirectly in terms of some physical characteristic of the sample or extracted fraction thereof that is largely responsible for the color characteristics. For evaluation more directly in terms of what the observer actually seen, color differences are measured by reflectance spectrophotometry and photoelectric colorimetry and expressed as differences in psychophysical indexes such as luminous reflectance and chromaticity. The standard system, against which other systems could be compared, is the one recommended by the International Committee on illumination and which is based on the 'standard observer', which is a simulated standard eye, consisting of three primary color filters Z, with X being essentially amber in color, Y, green and Z, blue. Any spectrophotometric curve of reflectance obtained from the surface of an object can be integrated in terms of X, Y and Z. Psychophysical notation may be converted by standard methods to the colorimetrically more descriptive terms of Munsell hue, value and chroma.

Combat uniforms require higher tensile and tear strength than civilian products, and applied infrared reflectance from the recently developed nighttime fluoroscopy equipment to ensure combatant survival at night. Unlike other uniforms for civilian use, combat uniforms require durability against laundering because they may not be supplied again, once originally provided. Therefore, this study examined the changes in strength and changes in infrared reflectance after multiple washing of combat uniforms. The experiment confirmed that the strength change after the washing of combat uniforms 15 times was maintained in the same manner as the result after washing five times. In the case of infrared reflectance, the difference in reflectance after multiple washing treatments was greater than that in the case where washing was not performed. Therefore, although the durability in the case of combat uniforms is strong, it is necessary to maintain a reflectance higher than a certain level through the development of materials and the development of dyes.

The hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin film solar cells using n/Al or n/Ag/Al back reflector have low short circuit current (Jsc) due to high absorption coefficients of Al or work function difference between n-layer and the metal. In this article, we utilized aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) to raise the internal reflectance for the improvement of short current density (Jsc) in a-Si:H thin film solar cells. It was found that there was a slight increase in the reflectance in the long wavelength range at the process temperature of 125oC due to improved crystalline quality of the AZO back reflector. The optical band gap (Eg) and work function were affected by the temperature and so did the internal reflectance. The increased internal reflectance within the solar cell resulted in Jsc of 14.94 mA/cm2 and the efficiency of 8.84%. Jsc for the cell without back reflector was 12.29 mA/cm2.
