  • The selective media including NPC agar, DHL agar, MacConkey agar, and Cetrimide desoxycholate agar were compared to determine selectivity for the growth of bacteria Cetrimide desoxycholate agar was better than NPC agar, DHL agar, and MacConkey agar for the growth of psychrotrophic grarn-negatve bacteria including Pseudomonas. and for the inhibition of gram positive bacteria The specificity of resazurin reduction time test was investigated to determine post-pasteurization contamination of market milk. Equal volume of Cetrimide desoxycholate broth was added to market milk, which was then incubated at $21^{\circ}C$ for 18 hours. The growth of bacteria in the incubated milk was detected in resazurin reduction time test. The results in resazurin reduction time test and total bacteria number count of market milk after storage at $7^{\circ}C$ were relatively correlated each other. Pseudomonas was isolated most frequently from the market milk stored at $7^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and Acinetobacter and Aeromonas followed. Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Enterobacter were frequently isolated from the mixture of market milk and Cetrimide desoxycholate broth incubated at $21^{\circ}C$ for 18hours in resazurin reduction time test.

  • This paper examines the development of smelting reduction process in POSCO from 1990 to 2007 with the perspective of post catch-up technological innovation. POSCO paid attention to smelting reduction process as a sort of next-generation iron and steel technology, and implemented COREX (coal ore reduction) by the cooperation with V$\"{o}$oest. In addition to this, POSCO started to develop FINEX (fine iron ore reduction) which can use abundant powder ore, and FINEX was developed through model plant, pilot plant, demo plant, and commercial facility. POSCO came up to innovation leader beyond fast follower by securing almost technologies concerning FINEX. The case of smelting reduction process shows various characteristics including appropriate technological choice, successive scale-up, spiral development system, complementary technological cooperation, long-tenn investment, the existence of top management's leadership, and Korean government's support in early stage. This case can be interpreted as a path-revealing innovation in the middle of technological paradigm change.

  • This study aimed to synthesize dispersed and reactive nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) with poly(1-vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate) (PVP/VA), nontoxic and biodegradable stabilizer. The nZVI used for the experiments was prepared by reduction of ferric solution in the presence of PVP/VA with specific weight ratios to iron contents. Colloidal stability was investigated based on the rate of sedimentation, hydrodynamic radius and zeta potential measurement. The characteristic time, which demonstrated dispersivity of particles resisting aggregation, increased from 21.2 min (bare nZVI) to 97.8 min with increasing amount of PVP/VA (the ratios of 2). For the most stable nZVI coated by PVP/VA, its reactivity was examined by nitrate reduction in a closed batch system. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants for the nitrate reduction by the nanoparticles with PVP/VA ratios of 0 and 2 were 0.1633 and $0.1395min^{-1}$ respectively. A nitrogen mass balance, established by quantitative analysis of aqueous nitrogen species, showed that the addition of PVP/VA to nZVI can change the reduction capacity of the nanoparticles.

  • A power frequency magnetic field reduction method using passive loop is presented. This method can be used to reduce magnetic fields generated within the restricted area near transmission lines by alternating current overhead transmission lines. A reduction algorithm is described and related equations for magnetic field reduction are explained. The proposed power frequency magnetic field reduction method is applied to a scaled-down transmission line model. The lateral distribution of reduction ratio between magnetic fields before and after passive loop installation is calculated to evaluate magnetic field reduction effects. Calculated results show that the passive loop can be used to cost-effectively reduce power frequency magnetic fields in the vicinity of transmission lines generated by overhead transmission lines, compared with other reduction methods, such as active loop, increase in transmission line height, and power transmission using underground cables.

  • This review article considered the electrochemical reduction of uranyl ions on a Pt surface. Specifically, we focussed on the improvement in its reduction current efficiency. First, this article briefly explained the fundamentals of the reduction of uranyl ($UO_2^{2+}$) ions on a Pt surface. Namely, they involved the electrochemical behaviour of uranium species, and electrochemical cell configurations for the reduction of $UO_2^{2+}$ ions. In addition, the effects of adsorbed hydrogen atoms were investigated on the reduction of $UO_2^{2+}$ ions. Finally, this article presented the methods for improving current efficiency of the reduction of $UO_2^{2+}$ ions on a Pt surface. Three different kinds of methods are introduced, which include electrochemical surface treatments of Pt electrode involving hydrogenation and anodisation, the use of catalyst poisons, and formation of thin mercury film on a Pt electrode. Moreover, this article provided some clues about how hydrogenation and catalyst poisons work on the reduction of $UO_2^{2+}$ ions.

  • Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is recognized to be carcinogenic and toxic and registered as a contaminant in many drinking water regulations. It occurs naturally and is also produced by industrial processes. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has been a central topic for chromium remediation since Cr(III) is less toxic and less mobile. In this study, fermentative Fe(III)-reducing bacterial strains (Cellu-2a, Cellu-5a, and Cellu-5b) were isolated from a groundwater sample and were phylogenetically related to species of Cellulomonas by 16S rRNA gene analysis. One selected strain, Cellu-2a showed its capacity of reduction of both soluble iron (ferric citrate) and solid iron (hydrous ferric oxide, HFO), as well as aqueous Cr(VI). The strain Cellu-2a was able to reduce 15 μM Cr(VI) directly with glucose or sucrose as a sole carbon source under the anaerobic condition and indirectly with one of the substrates and HFO in the same incubations. The heterogeneous reduction of Cr(VI) by the surface-associated reduced iron from HFO by Cellu-2a likely assisted the Cr(VI) reduction. Fermentative features such as large-scale cell growth may impose advantages on the application of bacterial Cr(VI) reduction over anaerobic respiratory reduction.

  • The endless scaling down of the semiconductor process made the impact of the power network noise on the performance of the state-of-the-art chip a serious design problem. This paper compares the performances of two popular circuit reduction approaches used to improve the efficiency of power network noise analysis: moment matching-based model order reduction (MOR) and node elimination-based MOR. As the benchmarks, we chose PRIMA and R2Power as the matching-based MOR and the node elimination-based MOR. Experimental results indicate that the accuracy, efficiency, and memory requirement of both methods very strongly depend on the structure of the given circuit, i.e., numbers of the nodes and sources, and the number of moments to preserve for PRIMA. PRIMA has higher accuracy in general, while the error of R2Power is also in the acceptable range. On the other hand, PRIMA has the higher efficiency than R2Power, only when the numbers of nodes and sources are small enough. Otherwise, R2Power clearly outperforms PRIMA in efficiency. In the memory requirement, the memory size of PRIMA increases very quickly as the numbers of nodes, sources, and preserved moments increase.

  • Up to now, microstructure changes of photocatalysts have been studied to improve photocatalytic activity. Especially, to improve the adsorption of reactants and reactive sites, porous and fine crystal structures have received much attention because of their large specific surface area. In this study, $TiO_2$ nanotubes were synthesized by hydrothermal method using $TiO_2$ nanoparticles; nanotubes were evaluated by oxidized methylene blue reduction test. Using synthesized $TiO_2$ nanotubes, results of TEM showed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were changed into folding sheets and nanotubes. XRD results showed that the peaks of the nanoparticles almost disappeared and only the rutile (110) and anatase (200) peaks were observed. Comparison of photocatalytic properties of nanoparticles and nanotube structures was performed by measuring the UV-vis absorbance with reducing oxidized methylene blue. As a result, the reduction rate of nanotubes was found to be $0.24{\mu}mol/s$, which was 2.6 times higher than the rate of reduction of nanoparticles.

  • The ultrafine titanium carbonitride particles ($TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$) below 100nm in mean size were successfully synthesized by Mg-thermal reduction process. The nanostructured sub-stoichiometric titanium carbide ($TiC_{0.7}$) particles were produced by the magnesium reduction at 1123K of gaseous $TiC_{l4}+xC_2Cl_4$ and the heat treatments in vacuum were performed for five hours to remove residual magnesium and magnesium chloride mixed with $TiC_{0.7}$. And final $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ phase was obtained by nitrification under normal $N_2$ gas at 1373K for 2 hrs. The purity of produced $TiC_{0.7}N_{0.3}$ particles was above 99.3% and the oxygen contents below 0.2 wt%. We investigated in particular the effects of the temperatures in vacuum treatment on the particle refinement of final product.

  • The reduction behavior of $Al_{2}O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures, prepared from $Al_{2}O_3/CuO$ or $Al_{2}O_3/Cu-nitrate$, was investigated by using thermogravimetry and hygrometry. The powder characteristics were examined by BET, XRD and TEM. Also, the influence of powder characteristics on the microstructure and properties of hot-pressed composites was analyzed. The formation mechanism of nano-sized Cu dispersions was explained based on the powder characteristics and reduction kinetics of oxide powders. In addition, the dependence of the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed composites on powder characteristics is discussed in terms of the initial size and distribution of Cu particles. The practical implication of these results is that an optimum processing condition for the design of homogeneous microstructure and required properties can be established.
