A number of passive aerodynamic drag reduction methods were applied separately and then in different combinations on an intercity bus model, through wind tunnel studies on a 1:20 scale model of a Mercedes Benz Tourismo 15 RHD intercity bus. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling was also conducted in parallel to assist with flow visualisation. The commercial CFD package $CFX^{TM}$ was used. It has been found that dramatic reductions in coefficient of drag ($C_D$) of up to 70% can be achieved on the model using tapered and rounded top and side leading edges, and a truncated rear boat-tail. The curved front section allows the airflow to adhere to the bus surfaces for the full length of the vehicle, while the boat-tails reduce the size of the low pressure region at the base of the bus and more importantly, additional pressure recovery occurs and the base pressures rise, reducing drag. It is found that the CFD results show remarkable agreement with experimental results, both in the magnitude of the force coefficients as well as in their trends. An analysis shows that such a reduction in aerodynamic drag could lead to a significant 28% reduction in fuel consumption for a typical bus on intercity or interstate operation. This could translate to a massive dollar savings as well as significant emissions reductions across a fleet. On road tests are recommended.
In the flow analysis around a bluffbody such as road vehicles, drag reduction has been of the primary concern mainly due to the effect on fuel economy. To reduce the drag, which is mostly due to the pressure difference caused by the flow separation, the location of the separation and eddy sizes are controlled. However, less attention has been given to the effect of the lift. The effect of lift may cause the driving stability problem of the vehicle at high speed white heavy downward effect of lift together with the vehicle weight may require more power to drive the vehicle forward. It is considered worthwhile to pursue the optimal design of the low drag tail shape of the MIRA model while taking the lift effect into account, even though it is considered as a reference. To this end, a commercial multi-objective optimization code, FRONTIER, Is used together with the CFD code, STAR-CD. It is hoped that the results will provide more insight into the flow field around the bluffbody as transportation means.
This paper explains how to correctly measure the drag coefficient of a circular cylinder in wind tunnels with large blockage ratios and for the sub-critical to the super-critical flow regimes. When dealing with large blockage ratios, the drag has to be corrected for wall constraints. Different formulations for correcting blockage effect are compared for each flow regime based on drag measurements of smooth circular cylinders performed in a wind tunnel for three different blockage ratios. None of the correction model known in the literature is valid for all the flow regimes. To optimize the correction and reduce the scatter of the results, different correction models should be combined depending on the flow regime. In the sub-critical regime, the best results are obtained using Allen and Vincenti's formula or Maskell's theory with ${\varepsilon}$=0.96. In the super-critical regime, one should prefer using Glauert's formula with G=0.6 or the model of Modi and El-Sherbiny. The change in the formulations appears at the flow transition with a variation of the wake pattern when passing from sub-critical to super-critical flow regimes. This parameter being not considered in the known blockage corrections, these theories are not valid for all the flow regimes.
The sailfish is the fastest sea animal, reaching its maximum speed of 110km/h. On its skin, a number of V-shaped protrusions pointing downstream exist. Thus, in the present study, the possibility of reducing the skin friction using its shape is investigated in a turbulent boundary layer. We perform a parametric study by varying the height and width of the protrusion, the spanwise and streamwise spacings between adjacent ones, and their overall distribution pattern, respectively. Each protrusion induces a pair of streamwsie vortices, producing low and high shear stresses at its center and side locations, respectively. These vortices also interact with those induced from adjacent protrusions. As a result, the drag is either increased or unchanged for all the cases considered. In some cases, the skin friction itself is reduced but total drag including the form drag on the protrusions is larger than that of a smooth surface. Since the shape of present protrusions is similar to that used by Sirovich and Karlsson [Nature 388, 753 (1997)] where V-shaped protrusions pointing upstream were considered, we perform another set of experiments following their study. However, we do not obtain any drag reduction even with random distribution of those V-shaped protrusion.

This paper has dealt with the effect of non ionized surfactant and water mixture on drag reduction and heat transfer enhancement in a circular pipe flow with experimentally. The test section was consisted of stainless steel pipe with inside diameter of 16mm. The wire coil was used to increase heat transfer in a pipe and the on ionized surfactant(Oleyl Dihydroxyethyl Amino Oxide, ODEAO) was used to reduce the drag force of water mixture with surfactant. The main parameters of this experiment were diameter and pitch of wire coil and the ratio of test section length and horizontal wire coil length. In this experiment, the acquired results were 1) Drag reduction effect existed in this ODEAO-water mixture, 2) Friction factor and heat transfer were increased with insertion the heat transfer enhancement coil, 3) With increasing of pitch ratio, heat transfer was decreased, and 4) Heat transfer was decreased by the decreasing of inserting coil diameter.
When a body with slant angle after its shoulder is moving at high speed, the turbulent motion around the afterbody is generally associated with the flaw separation and determines the normal component of the drag. By changing the slant angle of afterbody, there exists a critical angle at which the drag coefficients change drastically. Understanding and control of the turbulent separated flows are of significant importance for the design of optimal configuration of the moving bodies. In the present paper, a new Large Eddy Simulation technique has been developed to investigate turbulent vortical motions around the afterbodies with slant angle. By basis of understanding the structure of turbulent flaw around the body, the new configuration of afterbodies are designed to reduce the drag of body and the nonlinear effects due to the interaction between the body configuration and the turbulent separated flows are investigated by use of the developed LES technique.
Fuel consumption in fisheries is a primary concern due to environmental effects and costs to fishermen. Much research has been carried out to reduce the fuel consumption related to fishing operations. The fuel consumption of fishing gear in fishing operation is generally related to hydrodynamic resistance on the gear. This research is to propose a low drag generated midwater trawl in terms of the gear design improvement using simulations. The results from the simulation were verified with results that mirrored the model experiments. From the results, the resistance force of the proposed gear decreased to 29% compared to that of the current gear. Furthermore, the gear performance also improved with increased gear mouth compared to the current one. Therefore, the proposed gear will be helpful to reduce the greenhouse gases from fishing operation. It will also contribute to the fishing industry by saving fuel.
In this study, a wind tunnel test was conducted to measure the aerodynamic characteristics of a streamline-designed high-speed bus with the change of wind direction and speed and the result is compared with the aerodynamic performance of a commercialized high-speed bus model (Model-0) manufactured by Zyle Daewoo Bus Corp. Aerodynamic performance of the existing rear-spoiler was tested to prove its aerodynamic effect on the test model bus. From the study, it was found that 24.6 % of the total drag of the original bus model (Model-0) was reduced on the streamline-designed model bus(model-1) without the rear-spoiler but only 14.3 % of the total drag was reduced with the spoiler on the streamlined model bus. It means that the rear spoiler does not work properly with the streamlined model bus (model-1) and should be noted that an optimum design of a rear-spoiler of a vehicle is important to reduce the induced pressure drag and increase the driving stability of a vehicle against yaw motion. The experimental outcome was also compared to the previous numerical research result to evaluate the reliability of the numerical algorithm of the aerodynamic performance analysis of a vehicle. The error rate (%) of the numerical result to the experimental output is about 5.4 % and it is due to the simplified body configuration of the numerical model bus. The drag increases at the higher yaw angle because the transparent frontal area of the model vehicle increases and the downward force increases with the yaw angle as well. It has a positive effect to the driving stability of the vehicle but the moderated downward force should be kept for the fuel economy of a vehicle.
The fluid flow over structures has been widely investigated by many researchers because its extensive application in offshore structures, skyscrapers, chimneys and cooling towers, brides. In the viewpoint of reducing the drag for offshore structure, it becomes challenging problem in the field of hydrodynamic of offshore structure. The purpose of this study is to investigate a flow over a square cylinder with an attached splitter plate using RANS method. First, RANS turbulent models such as a standard $k-{\omega}$ model, SST $k-{\omega}$ model, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model, standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were used for choosing suitable turbulent model which has the best agreement with available experimental result. Drag of single cylinder estimated by using standard $k-{\omega}$ has a good agreement with published experimental result. Therefore, the stand $k-{\omega}$ was selected for simulation for flow over a square cylinder with an attached plate. Second, the numerical results of drag of square cylinder with an attached splitter plate in various length of an attached plate were performed using RANS method in ANSYS Fluent. In this paper, the numerical simulations were conducted at a Reynolds number of 485 and the thickness of the splitter plate is chosen as a constant value about 10% of cylinder width. The numerical results of drag coefficient of square cylinder are compared with experimental result published by other researchers. Finally, the effect of the splitter plate attached to the rear side of the square cylinder has been investigated numerically with a focus on the drag coefficient and flow characteristic. As a result, the drag coefficient decreases with an increase in splitter plate length.
The flow around a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) has been investigated numerically to improve the resistant performance by modifying the hull form of the ROV. In the case of the base hull form considered in this study, form drag rather than friction drag was the dominant component of total drag. Subsequently, the surfaces that were most susceptible to local pressure effects were modified to give them a more streamlined shape. Eleven different hull forms were chosen to undergo surface modification for drag reduction. In addition, four different boat-tail appendages with different slant angles were installed at the stern to reduce the wake vortices that are induced by the local regions of very low pressure. Consequently, a total of 11 different hull forms for drag reduction were considered. The final hull form, which combined the hull for which surface modification resulted in the lowest drag with a boat-tail appendage with a 15-degree slant angle, resulted in a drag reduction of 20%.
