  • A series of tetradentate Schiff base ligands; [1,2-bis(naphthylideneimino)ethane, 1,3-bis(naphthylideneimino)propane, 1,4-bis(naphthylideneimino)butane, and 1,5-bis(naphthylideneimino)pentane] and their Ni(Ⅱ) complexes have been synthesized. The properties of these ligands and their Ni(Ⅱ) complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR, UV-vis spectra, molar conductance, and thermogravimetric analysis. The mole ratio of Schiff base to Ni(Ⅱ) metal was found to be 1:1. The electrochemical redox process of the ligands and their Ni(Ⅱ) complexes in DMF and DMSO solution containing 0.1 M tetraethyl ammonium perchlorate (TEAP) as a supporting electrolyte have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, differential pulse voltammetry, and controlled potential coulometry at glassy carbon electrode. The redox process of the ligands was highly irreversible, whereas redox process of Ni(Ⅱ) complexes were observed as one electron transfer process in quasi-reversible and diffusion-controlled reaction. The electrochemical redox potentials of the Ni(Ⅱ) complexes were affected by the chelate ring size of ligands. The diffusion coefficients of Ni(Ⅱ) complexes containing 0.1 M TEAP in DMSO solution were determined to be 5.7-6.9 × 10-6 cm2/sec. Also the exchange rate constants were determined to be 1.8-9.5 × 10-2 cm2/sec. These values were affected by the chelate ring size of ligands.

  • Redox characteristics of metal oxide for hydrogen production by thermochemical water-splitting were investigated. $CuFe_2O_4$ as a redox pair that had a different molar ratio of Cu and Fe were prepared by co-precipitation method. Hydrogen production consisted of water-splitting step and thermal reduction step was performed below 1200K. Redox characteristics of Cu-ferrites were studied using the thermal gravimetric analysis technique. Also, structure change of Cu-ferrite during thermal reduction was investigated using the high temperature controlled XRD. In results, oxygen release of Cu-ferrite during the thermal reduction was initiated at oxygen site combined with Cu. Consequently, oxygen release amount of Cu-ferrite was increased with increase of Cu molar ratio of Cu-ferrite. It was found that thermal reduction of Cu-ferrite was begun at $875^\circ{C}$. It was confirmed that structure of Cu-ferrite was changed to metal and cation excess metal oxide during the thermal reduction step.

  • Anion exchange membranes for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) were prepared by pore-filling on a PE substrate with the copolymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The ion exchange capacity, water uptake and weight gain ratio were increased with a similar tendency up to 65% of GMA content, indicating that the monomer improved the pore-filling degree and membrane properties. The vanadium ion permeability and open-circuit voltage were also investigated. The permeability of the VG65 membrane was only $1.23{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ compared to $17.9{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ for Nafion 117 and $1.8{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ for AMV. Consequently, a VRB single cell using the prepared membrane showed higher energy efficiency (over 80%) of up to 100 cycles compared to the commercial membranes, Nafion 117 (ca. 58%) and AMV (ca. 70%).

  • The three electrodes (carbon felt) were tested in all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) to confirm the its usefulness. The electrode property was measured by the CV (cyclic voltammetry) method. The current ratio of maximum peak(IPA/IPC) in GF040BH5 and GF051BH3 had almost the same value compared to that in XF30A. The performances of VRFB using the each electrode were measured during 5 cycles of charge-discharge at the current density of $60mA/cm^2$. An average energy efficiency of the VRFB was 77.8%, 77.3%, and 79.2% for XF30A, GF040BH5 and GF051BH3, respectively. It was confirmed from the data that GF040BH5 and GF051BH3 is well suited for use in a VRFB as a electrode, like XF30A.

  • Oxidative stress is associated with colon carcinogenesis including aberrant crypt foci (ACF) formation and it plays an important role in pathophysiological changes in cancer cells. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of dietary unpolished Thai rice (UTR) on ACF formation and dysplastic progression in azoxymethane (AOM)-treated rats. Anti-cancer efficacy of UTR regarding apoptotic induction and oxidative redox status in human colon cancer (CaCo-2) cells was also investigated. Rats given 20% and 70% of UTR in the diet showed significantly and dose-dependently decreased total number of ACF. UTR treatment also was strongly associated with the low percentage of dysplastic progression and mucin depletion. In addition, we found that UTR significantly induced cancer cell apoptosis, increased cellular oxidants, and decreased the level of GSH/GSSG ratio in CaCo-2 cells. Our study suggests that UTR supplementation may be a useful strategy for CRC prevention with the inhibition of precancerous progression, with induction of cancer cell apoptosis through redox alteration.

  • The voltammetric behavior of spontaneously adsorbing Mo layers on Pt(111) and Pt(100) electrodes has been studied to estimate the number of electrons involved in the electrochemical processes of spontaneously adsorbed Mo and the number of the bloc ked Pt sites for hydrogen adsorption. On Pt(111) and Pt(100) surfaces, the spontaneously adsorbed Mo layers showed redox peaks at 0.10 V and 0.15 V, respectively, and continuous current-potential waves in the conventional hydrogen region. Since the potential range of the Mo redox processes on both surfaces overlapped partially with the potential range of hydrogen adsorption, the variation in the ratio of the total charge of Mo and H ($Q_H$ +$Q_{MO}$) to the hydrogen charge of clean Pt electrode ($Q_H^0$) was analyzed. From the analysis, six electrons were estimated to be involved in the electrochemical processes of the spontaneously adsorbed Mo, and four Pt sites for hydrogen adsorption were calculated to be blocked by one adsorbed Mo atom. Based on these figures and the pH dependence of the Mo redox processes, we have proposed an electrochemical equation for the spontaneously adsorbed Mo. This electrochemical equation led us to conclude that the saturation coverage of the spontaneously adsorbed Mo is 0.25. The coverage of Mo less than 0.25, however, could not be determined voltammetrically due to the convolution of the charges of Mo and H.

  • We studied the water splitting into $H_2$ and $O_2$ using two different semiconductor photo catalysts and redox mediator, mimicking the Z-scheme mechanism of the photosynthesis, $H_2$ evolution took place on a Pt-$SrTiO_2$ (Cr-Ta doped) photocatalyst using $I^-$ electron donor under the visible light irradiation. The Pt-$WO_3$ photocatalyst showed an excellent activity of the $O_2$ evolution using $IO_3^-$ electron acceptor under visible light. $H_2$ and $O_2$ gases evolved in the stoichiometric ratio($H_2/O_2$=2) under visible light using a mixture of the Pt-$WO_3$ and Pt-$SrTiO_3$ (Cr-Ta doped) suspended in NaI aqueous solution. We proposed a two-step photo-excitation mechanism using redox mediator under the visible irradiation.

  • In this study, the redox state of iron in sodium silicate glasses was varied by changing the melting conditions, such as the melting temperature and particle size of iron oxide. The oxidation states of the iron ion were determined by wet chemical analysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy methods. Iron commonly exists as an equilibrium mixture of ferrous ions, $Fe^{2+}$, and ferric ions $Fe^{3+}$. In this study, sodium silicate glasses containing nanoparticles of iron oxide (0.5% mol) were prepared at various temperatures. Increase of temperature led to the transformation of ferric ions to ferrous ions, and the intensity of the ferrous peak in 1050 nm increased. Nanoparticle iron oxide caused fewer ferrous ions to be formed and the $\frac{Fe^{2+}}{Fe^{3+}}$ equilibrium ratio compared to that with micro-oxide iron powder was lower.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of total phosphorus (TP) and phosphate phosphorous ($PO_4$-P) concentrations in ponded water and redox potential (Eh) in paddy soil during the growing season. The TP and $PO_4$-P concentrations showed twice peak values after basal dressing and tillering fertilization. The ratio of $PO_4$-P to TP showed low values (0.07~0.18), indicating that most of phosphorus is particlulate. The $PO_4$-P concentrations significantly decreased with dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The Eh showed high values (179~636 mV) under non-ponded aerobic condition, but low values (74~112 mV) under ponded anaerobic condition The TP and $PO_4$-P concentrations in ponded water increased shortly after tillering fertilization even if phosphorus was not applied. This may be due to the release of dissolved phosphorus from the bottom sediment and its associated algal and water flea blooms under anaerobic condition. Therefore, proper water management should be needed shortly after tillering fertilization.

  • Syngas and hydrogen from the $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ coated foam devices were investigated under simulated solar radiation. The $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ coated SiC, Ni and Cu foam device were prepared using drop-coating method. Syngas production step was performed at $900^{\circ}C$, and hydrogen production process was performed for ten repeated cycles to compare the CeO2 conversion in syngas production step, $H_2$ yield in hydrogen production step and cycle reproducibility. The produced syngas had the $H_2$/CO ratio of 2, which was suitable for methanol synthesis or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process. In addition, syngas and hydrogen production process is one of the promising chemical pathway for storage and transportation of solar heat by converting solar energy to chemical energy. After ten cycles of redox reaction, the $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ was analyzed using XRD pattern and SEM image in order to characterize the physical and chemical change of metal oxide at the high temperature.
