Effects of Artificial Acid Rain on Chemical Properties of Korean Forest Soils (인공산성우(人工酸性雨)가 삼림토양(森林土壤)의 화학적(化學的) 성질(性質)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of acid deposition on forest soil, major five Korean forest soils(Brown, Dark red, Gray brown, Red and Yellow, and Volcanic ash forest soils) The samples were subjected to receive 1200mm($100mm{\times}12$ times) of artificial acid rain adjusted to pH5.6, 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0. The results obtained of major importance are summarized as follow ; 1. Ca appeared mostly affected at pH treatment of 2.0, while less affected by other pH treatments. Leaching of Ca rapidly increased with increasing of artificial acid rain acidity and application times in Dark red forest soil. 2. In the cases of Mg, K and Na, they showed gradual increase with the addition of artificial acid rain. Mg and Na losses showed similar leaching patterns, but they didn't show difference among the five forest soils. 3. Exchangeable canon concentrations in the soil leachates, which looked slightly different among the five forest soils, were the highest in pH2.0 treatment. Hydrogen ion comsumption capability by exchangeable canon was the highest in Dark red forest soil followed by Volcanic ash, Red and Yellow, Gray brown and Brown forest soils when artificial acid rain were treated.

  • The present paper summerizes the studies on clay mineralogical characteristics of Korean soil, relationship between potassium and clay minerals, potassium release pattern of clay minerals and utilization of clay minerals for soil conditioner and fertilizers, which have been carried out in this laboratory. 1. The red yellow podzolic soil is mostly abundant in the upland of Korea and mainly consists of halloysite and weathered intermediates of mica such as illite and vermiculite. 2. With regard to soil parent material, kaolin mineral occurs abundant in soils derived from granite and granite gneiss. Mica is dominant in basaltic soil. The main clay mineral of the soil, originated from the Tertiary, is found montmorillonite and the volcanic soil of Jeju Island has plenty of allophane as its main clay mineral. 3. It is confirmed that the soil fertility depends on the composition of clay minerals. The red yellow podzolic soil, containing lot of kaolin, shows low productivity while the montmorillonite soil has higher productivity. 4. The release rate of solid phase potassium (micas and fixed potassium) follows the 1st order reaction equation in the equilibrium solution of $IN-NH_4OAc$. The potassium release constant is positively correlated with the mica content of the clay but negatively correlated with the content of $14.5{\AA}$ minerals. On the other hand, the potassium release constant has very high correlation with the ratio(Kex/Kt) of exchangeable potassium(Kex) to total potassium(Kt). 5. It is also found that Kex/Kt has rather high correlation with the content of mica and $14.5{\AA}$ minerals existed in the clay as well as the mica content of the soil.

  • New process for the preparation of the artificially soild cloth (ASC) used for detergency evaluation was developed and its detergency was also studied. ASC was prepared by the dipping of cotton cloth in the water in which oily soil, protein (gelatine), carbon black and clay had been dispersed. The clay used for this ASC was red yellowish soil around Mt. Kumjung and was a typical soil in Pusan area. Adhesive status of soil at prepared ASc was examined by an electron microscope, and crystallyzation and color change of used clay were evaluated with the determination of X-ray diffraction and surface reflectance. For the evaluation of detergency by the washing with commercial and model detergents, the behavior of soil removal from this ASC comparing with naturally soiled collar cloth was examined. Those results are summerized as followings; 1) Adhesive ststus of soil at prepared ASc was very similar to that of naturally soiled collar cloth. 2) A crystalline of clay calcined at $800^{\circ}C$ was disappeared in part and color of calcined clay changed into reddish yellow by the decomposition of organic matters. 3) More uniform ASc was prepared with clay calcined at $800^{\circ}C\;that\;200^{\circ}C$ however its detergency prepared from clay calcined at $800^{\circ}C$ was poor 4) A significant relationship between the content of inorganic matter in ASc and K/S value was found, however no significant result between the content of protein contaminated and K/S value was observed. 5) Detergency of prepared ASc had a very similar to that of naturally soiled collar cloh.

Material Characteristics and Making Techniques of the Goryeo Roof Tiles from Oegol Site of Tangjeong Area in Asan, Korea (아산 탕정지구 외골유적 출토 고려 기와의 재료과학적 특성과 제작기법)

  • The Goryeo roof tiles from the Oegol site in Tangjeong, Asan are classified into three groups in color such as gray, red yellow and gray-yellow groups, respectively. While each group of tiles shows characteristic specific gravity, absorption ratio, LOI and vitrification degree, mineral content and distribution, and chemical composition are generally homogeneous among all groups of roof tiles. Also, all roof tiles and soils from the site show similar geochemical behavior of elements and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates that the soil from the site is probable to be a raw material of the roof tiles. Firing temperature of the roof tiles is estimated as 950 to $1,050^{\circ}C$ for the gray group, 800 to $900^{\circ}C$ for the red yellow group, and 900 to $950^{\circ}C$ for the gray-yellow group. In conclusion, roof tiles from the Oegol site is interpreted to be made of local clay without additive minerals, applying various firing conditions and standardized purifying process of raw clay materials.

  • 적황색토와 플라이애쉬의 혼합비율에 증가에 따라 건조밀도도 증가하며 최적함수비는 감소하는 경향이고 2차 첨가재인 소석회 및 시멘트 첨가에 의한 건조밀도의 증가는 보이나 처리토의 경량화의 범위는 1:03~1:0.5 정도임을 확인할 수 있었다. 프라이애쉬의 혼합비율이 증가해도 프라이애쉬의 고유산화칼슘(CaO)의 함유량이 적으면 유리산화칼슘의 증가도 크지 않으나, 2차 첨가재인 소석회 및 시멘트 첨가량의 증대에 따라 증가한다. 이는 첨가재에 의한 수화반응의 증가로 확인되며, 본 처리토는 Ion 교환작용과 Pozzolan 반응 생성물인 규산칼슘석회수화물(5CaO.6SiO$_2$.5$H_2O$, Tobermorite)과 알민산유산석회수화물(3CaO.Al$_2$O$_3$.3CaSO$_4$.32$H_2O$, Ettringite)가 주된 반응생성물이며 확인된 알민산유산석회수화물(Ettringite)의 회절 X-선 강도는 2차 첨가재의 첨가에 따른 수화반응으로 수화물은 점차 증가하며 상대적으로 일축압축강도도 상응한 강도발현을 하여 고결화 효과에 기여하고 있음을 보여준다.

  • To investigate the characteristic and the cause of the yellow water zones in the estuary of keum River, physico-chemical measurement and analyses were made on seawater samples collected from 18 stations in May, July, august, October in 1992, and February in 1993 respectively. The yellow water zones were recorded as grade 9 on the forel water color meter and appeared consistently at the stations 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 17 through out the year. The organically polluted matter gradually increased in the study area. The nutrient concentrations of inner waters of water zones were higher than that of the surrounding waters and were over red tide criteria levels. But abnormal aggregation of phytoplanktons could not occur because of lack of light and high current velocity. In Conclusion, this yellowish colored water zone was caused not by abnormal aggregation of phytoplanktons but by inorganic matters such as sand or soil particles, $85\%$ of which consisted of suspended solids.

  • A total of 129 surface(upto 30 cm depth) soil samples were selected from the profile samples collected during reconnaissance soil survey in 1967, for the determination of phosphorus absorption co-efficient. The distribution range for each soil association has been established. The physicochemical factors affecting the phosphorus absorption coefficient have also been examined. The following general conclusions can be drown: 1. In general, the phosphorus absorption coefficient of the soil association of presently arable land are lower than the soils which are not in cultivation. 2. The higher the cation exchange capacity of soils, the higher is the phosphorus absorption coefficient. A Study on the Cause and Improvement of the Red-Water Occurrence in Urban Stream (도심하천 내 적수발생 지점에 대한 원인검토 및 개선방안 연구)

  • This study aims to identify the cause of the red-water occurrence (the phenomenon of water being red) that occurs at some points and sections of rivers in Yongin City. As a result of conducting a preliminary investigation, total three sites were selected as the investigation point as it was found that the red-water occurrence continued. As a result of the investigation, it is judged that the cause of the red-water in Yongin-city river is due to the soil color and iron content of the region. JPS, SBS, and JJS sites all showed that the color of soil is mainly consist of reddish brown and red-yellow. The average Fe concentration was 13.75 mg/L, 10.85 mg/L, and 1.31 mg/L, for each sites, and considering that the Fe concentration in general river water was less than 0.5 mg/L, it was confirmed that the concentration was quite high. At the JPS and JJS points, the red-water occurrence occurred mainly in stagnant places, which is believed to be strengthened by the reaction of organic and microorganisms. In the case of SBS, the wateris red, but as a result of observing the actual color, it is judged that the iron component deposited in the pipe causes an optical illusion with a deep red color. In addition, it is believed that the iron concentration can be reduced to the general river water concentration range by removing the particulate iron component through a decrease of more than 95% as a result of filtering with glass fiber filter with particulate iron. As a result of this study, it is necessary to manage the river to maintain the flow, and it is believed that the occurrence of red-water at the survey point can be alleviated through uptake action through planting and agglomeration precipitation and agglomeration filtration methods for particulate iron treatment.

Predicting Unsaturated Soil Water Content Using CIELAB Color System-based Soil Color (CIELAB 색 표시계 기반 토색을 활용한 불포화토 함수비 예측 연구)

  • A study was conducted to use soil color obtained from digital im ages as an indicator of soil water content. Digital images of Jumoonjin standard sand with five different water contents were captured under nine different lighting conditions. Through digital image processing, the soil color of the sample was obtained based on the CIELAB color system, and the effect of lighting conditions and water content on the soil color was analyzed. The results indicated that L* showed a high correlation with illuminance, whereas a* and b* showed a high correlation with color temperature. As the water content increased, L*, which represents the brightness of the soil color, decreased, and a* and b* increased. Therefore, the soil color changed from green and blue to red and yellow. Based on the regression analysis results of lighting conditions, water content, and soil color, a water content predicting method based on the soil color of silica-based sand photographed under irregular light conditions was proposed. The proposed method can predict the water content with a m axim um error of 0.29%.

Study on Integrated Control against Root-knot Nematode of Fruit Vegetables (Oriental Melon and Cucumber) in Vinyl House (시설과채류(오이, 참외)의 뿌리혹선충 종합방제에 관한 연구)

  • To reduce crop damage from root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne spp. chemical, cultural, physical control methods were compared in commercial greenhouse for 3 years from 1992 to 1994. Timing of sol exchange for economic losses due to the nematodes is important: every 3 years for coarse sand (Masatto) and every 4 years for red-yellow soil. Control effects on Meloidogyne spp. in cucumber were 78.2% in Dazomet DP, 72.1% Carbo G+Soil reverse+submergence, and 66.3% in Carbo G+submergence. Pesticide effects were temporally different after treatment: 77.7~80.6% in 20 days and 33.7~49.5% in 60 days. Cropping system in oriental melon gave an excellent control effect of 81.1% at oriental melon/rice culture. All methods controled root-knot nematodes at the time of the treatment but the number of the nematodes increased at the end of the season. However, soil exchange was effective for 3 years. The most economic control practice is rotation with rice for every three years.
