Natural Weathering of Wood Heat-Treated at $220^{\circ}C$

  • When wood is exposed to natural weathering and UV radiation discoloration progresses. The color variation of heat-treated wood was investigated. Four domestic species were selected and heat-treated at $220^{\circ}C$ and naturally weathered for 42 days. Their colors were measured with a portable colorimeter. The color variations were different between species. The Korean red pine specimens were highly discolored by the natural weathering even though they were heat-treated. In contrast to Korean red pine, Korean pine is less discolored. The maximum color difference of larch was lower than Korean red pine. All specimens of birch exceeded the color difference criterion of 15 after 25 hours with the maximum of 28.

솔잎혹파리가 소나무생장(生長)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관한 연구(研究)(II) - 소나무의 피해(被害) - (Studies on the Effects of the Pine Needle Gall Midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye, on the Growth of the Red Pine, Pinus densiflora S. et Z. (II) - Growth impact on red pine -)

  • 솔잎혹파리가 소나무 생장(生長)에 미치는 영향(影響)을 그 발생경과년수(發生經過年數)가 서로 다른 충청남도(忠清南道) 서천군(舒川郡), 보령군(保寧郡), 홍성군내(洪城郡內) 9개(個) 지역(地域)에서 조사(調査), 비교(比較)하였다. 이 조사(調査)는 피해허용한계(被害許容限界)를 알기 위한 첫 단계(段階)로 소나무피해(被害)의 개황(槪況)을 본 것으로 얻어진 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1) 솔잎혹파리가 발생(發生)된 소나무의 피해(被害)는 4~5년간(年間) 지속(持續)되는데 2~3년차(年次)에 가장 심(甚)하였다. 2) 솔잎혹파리의 충영형성(蟲廮形成)은 소나무의 직경생장(直径生長)과 수고생장(樹高生長)의 저해(沮害)를 동시(同時)에 일으킨다. 3) 소나무의 직경생장(直径生長)과 수고생장간(樹高生長間)에는 밀접(密接)한 상관관계(相關關係)가 있었으며 솔잎혹파리 피해(被害)에도 불구하고 이 관계(關係)는 교란되지 않았다. 따라서, 주신초(主新梢)의 생장저해(生長沮害) 상황(狀況)을 가지고 직경생장(直径生長)의 저해정도(沮害程度)를 추정(推定)할 수 있을 것이다. 4) 솔잎혹파리의 충영율(蟲廮率)은 북향(北向)에서 월등(越等)하게 높아 소나무의 고사(枯死)도 북향(北向)에서 높았다. 5) 솔잎혹파리로 인(因)한 13년생(年生) 소나무의 재적생장손실(材積生長損失)은 수확표와 비교(比較)할 때 75~85% 이상(以上)이 되고 이 피해(被害)는 정상적(正常的)인 생장(生長)을 되찾아도 복구(復舊)되기 어려울 것 같다.

Dendrochronological Dating of Coffin Woods from Hoamdong, Chungju, Korea

  • The objective of this study was to date coffin woods of a grave of husband and wife, using the tree rings, which were excavated from Hoamdong, Chungju city in the central area of South Korea. The species of coffin woods was Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), one of the major conifers growing in Korea. The husband coffin was dated as A.D. 1628. Due to the absence of bark in the wife's coffin, the number of sapwood rings was estimated to obtain the cutting date. The cutting date of wife's one was estimated to be A.D. 1651${\pm}$10. The Jeogori Jacket for women, which was found in the husband coffin, indicates that the husband died earlier than the wife, as the tree-ring dates suggested.

예산 예림지구 출토 목관재의 수종 및 연륜연대 분석 (Identification of Species and Tree-Ring Dating for Coffin Woods Excavated at Yerim Site in Yesan, Chungnam, Korea)

  • The purpose of this study were to analyze the species and tree-ring dates of coffin woods excavated at Yerim site in Yesan, Chungnam, Korea. We sampled 12 pieces of woods from two coffins. The species of all coffin woods were identified as red pine group, most likely, $Pinus$ $densiflora$. The last rings of both coffins were dated A.D. 1557 and A.D. 1601, respectively. The tree-ring dates indicated that the coffins were made in the late 16th and early 17th century.

Tree-Ring Dating of Coffin Woods Excavated from Shinnae-dong in Seoul, Korea

  • This study aims to date wooden coffins excavated from graves in Shinnae-dong, Seoul, South Korea, using dendrochronology. The species of woods used to make the coffins were identified as Pinus densiflora S. et Z., one of the major conifers in Korea. Of 12 graves, 10 were successfully dated using various red-pine chronologies of South Korea. Due to the absence of the last-formed tree ring before felling, the number of sapwood rings, used to obtain likely cutting dates, had to be estimated. The terminus post quem for two coffins without plaster frames were AD 1548 and AD 1571, respectively. Eight coffins with plaster frames yielded estimated dates from AD 1664 to AD 1799. The tree-ring dates indicated that the coffins with plaster frames in Shinnae-dong were constructed approximately 100 years later than those without plaster frames.

  • 강원도산(江原道産) 소나무천연림(天然林)의 생산성(生産性)을 파악(把握)하기 위하여 10본(本)의 표본목(標本木)을 벌도(伐倒)하고 각(各) 부위별(部位別) 및 총(總) biomass와 biomass 추정방정식(推定方程式) 모형으로는 $Wt=aD^bH^c$가 가장 적합(適合)하였다. 2) 임분(林分) biomass 추정량(推定量)은 지상부(地上部) 총량(總量)이 198.82 t/ha였으며 부위별(部位別)로는 수간목부(樹幹木部)가 136.82 t/ha, 생지부(生枝部)가 32.81 t/ha, 수피부(樹皮部)가 10.72 t/ha 엽량(葉量)이 9.07 t/ha 죽은가지가 7.30 t/ha 였다. 3) 순생산량(純生産量)은 지상부총량(地上部總量)이 15.87 t/ha/yr였으며 부위별(部位別)로는 수간목부(樹幹木部)가 7.04 t/ha/yr., 생지부(生枝部)가 4.91 t/ha/yr., 엽량(葉量)이 2.21 t/ha/yr., 소지(小枝)가 1.13 t/ha/yr., 수피(樹皮)가 0.52 t/ha/yr 였다. 4) Leaf efficiency는 1.876으로서 연간지상부(年間地上部) 총생산량(總生産量) 15.87 t/ha/yr와 비교적 잘 연관되어 있다.

열처리에 의한 청변균 변색 소나무 판재의 재색 변화 (Effect of Heat Treatment on the Color Change of Blue-Stained Pinus densiflora Boards)

  • Red pine is a popular species for making a cutting board in Korea, but easily sap stained. Heat treatment could improve its quality by darkening and equalizing the color of sap stained wood. The color change of sap stained red pine boards was investigated by heat treatment at $190^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the color of heat treated boards got darker and it made the color of sap stain vanished. A colorimeter was used to measure color indexes. It was revealed that the values of the lightness ($L^*$) and the yellowness ($b^*$) decreased as heat treatment repeated while the values of the redness ($a^*$) increased. The average of the color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) between the control and 1st heat treated boards was 16.1, which could be expressed as 'Extremely different' while that between the 1st and 2nd heat treated boards was 8.3, which could be expressed as 'Considerably different'. The fact that heat treatment equalized the color of boards was confirmed by a statistical analysis.

Growth Analysis of Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) by Stem Analysis in the Eastern Region of Korea

  • The study was performed to analyze the growth of the red pine (Pinus densiflora) in the Eastern Region of Korea. Stem profile data from a total of 8 dominant trees of which each tree represents its site were collected and used for the analysis. The stem volumes were calculated using Smalian's formula and much higher than the ones by Korea Forest Research Institute in larger than dbh 40 cm. The total bark volumes were more proportionally related to dbh and stem volume than to height and age. The bark thickness and volume decreased as relative height increases but increased as relative dbh increased. The average PAI of dbh and height reached the highest at 0.8 cm/yr (age 15) and at 0.45 m/yr (age 30) respectively, while the average PAI of volume steadily tended to increase up to age 80. The growth percentages of dbh, height and volume tended to decrease with age and volume growth percentage was higher than dbh and height.

Soil Carbon Cycling and Soil CO2 Efflux in a Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) Stand

  • This study was conducted to evaluate forest carbon cycling and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates in a 42-year-old pine (Pinus densiflora) stand located in Hamyang-gun, Korea. Aboveground and soil organic carbon storage, litterfall, litter decomposition, and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were measured for one year. Estimated aboveground biomass carbon storage and increment in this stand were $3,250gC/m^2\;and\;156gC\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. Soil organic carbon storage at the depth of 30 cm was $10,260gC/m^2$ Mean organic carbon inputs by needle and total litterfall were $176gC\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}\;and\;235gC\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. Litter decomposition rates were faster in nne roots less than 2 mm diameter size ($<220\;g\;kg^{-1}yr^{-1}$) than in needle litter ($<120\;g\;kg^{-1}yr^{-1}$). Annual mean and total soil respiration rates were $0.37g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ and $2,732g\;CO_2m^{-2}yr^{-1}$ during the study period. A strong positive relationship existed between soil $CO_2$ efflux and soil temperature (r=0.8149), while soil $CO_2$ efflux responded negatively to soil pH (r=-0.3582).

  • Litterfall, decomposition, and dynamics of n and p in decomposing litter were investigated for 2 years in red pine ( pinus densiflora) and chinese thuja( thuja orientalis)stands in the limestone area. Average litterfall in red pine and chinese thuja stands were 4, 535kgDM ha-1 yr-1 and 5, 010 kgDM ha-1 yr-1, respectively. Seasonal litterfall in red pine and chinese thuja stands showed peaks in November. concentrations of N and P in the needle litter were lowest in the winter when the greast litterfall occurred, and highest in the summer when the least litterfall occurred. However, those in chinese thuja scale leaf litter showed litter seasonal variation.amount of N and P returned to the forest floor through litterfall were 29.02kgN ha-1 yr-1 , 2.81 kg P ha-1 yr-1 for red pine stand, and 31.06 kg N ha-1 yr-1 , 2.86kgP ha-1 yr-1 for chinese thuja stand, respectively. After 21 mounts elapsed, needle and chinese thuja scale leaf litterbags lost 34.8% and 32.5% of the initial weight, respectively. N concentrations in the docomposing needle and chines thuja scale leaf litter decreased by 19% and 30%, respectively, after 1 month elapsed, and then gradually increased to exceed the initial concentration after 9 months elapsed and then gradually increased to exceed the initial concentration after 9 months elapsed in both of them, P in needle and chines thuja scale leaf litter decreased by 54% and 57% of the initial concentration, respectively, after 1 month elapsed. unlike N, P concentration in the decomposing litter did not exceed that of initial ones. Neyt immobilization period of N and P in decomposing litter did not occur over the study period.
