  • An ore of stone obtained from quarry lose its about 60% such as the muck and the stone-dust during the process of making the architectural block, the crushed aggregate and so on. A part of the muck is only reutilized for the crushed aggregate as road pavement materials, while the most of the muck in the shape of powder is mixed with water and then it is deposited in a sludge tank. The muck in the shape of powder is called the stone-dust. If the stone-dust is discharged and sprayed, an ecosystem will have terrible damage because the seepage of surface water, the flow of ground water and the movement of air are not occurred smoothly by packing the void of soils. As the Waste Management Law (2003) in Korea, the stone-dust is sorted out the industrial waste and the most of that is dumped in ground. Therefore, the establishments of an efficient recycling plan are necessary through the improvement of engineering properties of the stone-dust. To investigate the possibility of recycle and improvement for the stone-dust, the stone-dust and natural soils are sampled from six quarries in Korea. The various soil tests are performed by use of the mixed soils with the stone-dust content ratio. As the result of various soil tests, the recycle possibility of the stone-dust is analyzed as subbase layer materials of the roads.

  • In this study, the correlation between cement quality(chemical composition, mineral composition, and compressive strength) and amount of waste alternative fuels used in the cement manufacturing process and was investigated. Cement manufacturing facility using coal, soft plastics(plastics that are easily scattered by wind power, such as vinyls), hard plastics(plastics that do not contain foreign substances, waste rubber, PP, etc.) and reclaimed oil was analised. Data was collected for 3 years from 2017 to 2019 and let the amount of fuels used as an independent variable and cement quality data as a dependent variable. As a result, depending on the type and quality of the alternative fuel has not a significant effect on the chemical composition(Cl and LSF) and mineral composition(f-CaO, C3S contents). Contrary to the concern that the compressive strength of cement would decrease, there was a significant positive correlation between amount of alternative fuel used and cement compressive strength.

  • As there have been lately many worldwide resource challenges such as potential exhaustion of fossil fuels, sudden rise of oil price and ever-rising grain pricing due to global food crisis, there have been more interests focused on recycling vegetable oils and fats into clean natural fuel and producing new resources based on waste cooking oil as a part of reusing waste resources. An Experiment was performed by using ratio of 50:50, 75:25 (w/w) mixture of based rapeseed oil, camellia oil, and olive oil. 50:50, 25:75 (w/w) mixture of based palm oil. The result was that the oleic acid ($C_{18:1}$) got the lowest percentage of 42.8%, when we combined the mixture of rapeseed oil and soybean oil. While the highest percentage of 72.1% was when the mixture of camellia oil and rapeseed oil were combined at 50:50 ratio. In 75:25 (w/w) case, mixture of rapeseed oil and soybean oil got the lowest. The highest ratio was the mixture of camellia oil and olive oil. Based on the component of palm oil, the total saturated fatty acid was decreased. It is expected that stabilizing oxidation through controlling of fatty acid after mixture and that liquidity at a low temperature. The acid value indicated that stabilizing oxidation got a range of highest to lowest. Camellia oil ranked as the highest, followed by olive oil, and the oil seeds as the lowest in rank. Controlling iodine value through mixture and improvement of stabilizing oxidation will provide a good quality. The quality of color has no significant change about mixture in ratio and maintenance. The reduction of the cost of refining process is expected by controling of mixture ratio at biodiesel production in the future.

  • Increase in demotion and repair works on buildings in the construction market generates a large amount of construction waste. Recycling of construction waste is important for saving of resources, preservation of environment and constant advance of the construction industry. Accordingly, the environmental and economic value of recycled aggregate, which is produced after waste concrete is crushed, is increasingly highlighted. It is generally known that compared to concrete made of ordinary aggregate, concrete made of recycled aggregate has low quality, and the low quality is dependent on the amount of the bonding heterogeneous (cement paste and mortar) as well as the amount of the pores within the bonding heterogeneous. Reports on carbonation mechanism shows that the pores of cement-based materials are filled up by the progress of carbonation. Therefore, this study aims at an estimation of the period for optimum carbonation reforming appropriate for the thickness of the bonding heterogeneous of recycled aggregate, based on carbonation mechanism, with a view to improving the product quality by means of filling up the pores of the bonding heterogeneous of recycled aggregate. This study drew the carbonation depth according to the passage of age by calculating the bonding ratio and bonding thickness of the bonding heterogeneous as against the particle size distribution of recycled aggregate as well as by chemical quantitative analysis according to the age of accelerated carbonation of mock-up samples imitating bonding heterogeneous. Based on the correlation between the age of accelerated carbonation and carbonation depth, this study also proposed the estimated period of carbonation reforming of recycled aggregate appropriate for the thickness of the bonding heterogeneous.

  • Waste shell powder was added to the high density polyethylene(HDPE), and resultant mechanical properties and flame retardancy were analyzed in terms of shell content. Compatibilizer(PE-g-MA) was used to enhance the mechanical properties of the prepared HDPE/shell composites, and several flame retardant agents($Al_2O_3$, $Sb_2O_3$) were utilized to improve flame retardancy. Addition of the compatibilizer resulted in an improved mechanical properties due to the increased interfacial bonding between HDPE matrix and shell powder. In the case of impact strength, it even reached to the impact strength of pure HDPE. Also the addition of the flame retardant agents did not exhibit mechanical property decrease. UL-94 flammability test on the prepared HDPE/shell composites indicated that at 40wt% of shell only inclusion, time to ignite the flame and the total time of flame duration increased. When flame retardant agents mixed with shell powder were added to the HDPE matrix, improved flame retardancy was observed. Generally, flame retardancy effect of $Al_2O_3$ was better than $Sb_2O_3$. UL-94 V-0 classification was observed for the specimens with $Al_2O_3$ and compatibilizer at more than 40wt% shell, and also for specimens with $Sb_2O_3$ and compatibilizer at all shell content.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop ceramic glazes for the pottery production by utilizing wasted white porcelain, celadon porcelain and bone china thrown away from the areas of Icheon and Yeoju. Most of Korean pottery manufacturers are located in the both areas. According to the XRF analysis, the wasted white porcelain contains over 67 % of silica. It is enough to make a transparent glaze without adding silica. The wasted celadon porcelain contains much $Fe_2O_3$, which is suitable for producing a celadon glaze. The wasted bone china contains 22 % of $P_2O_5$, which is suitable for making a milky white bone china glaze. As a result, it is expected that production of pottery glaze using the wasted porcelains will reduce pollution problems comes from the landfill, and obtain economic effects in terms of resources recycling. It is also expected to be utilized as alternative materials of imported ones.

  • With the rising global environmental awareness on energy saving and carbon reduction, as well as the environmental transition and natural disasters resulted from the greenhouse effect, waste resources should be efficiently used to save environmental space and achieve environmental protection principle of "sustainable development and recycling". This study used recycled cement mortar and adopted the volumetric method for experimental design, which replaced cement (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) with recycled materials (fly ash, slag, glass powder) to test compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). The hyperbolic function for nonlinear multivariate regression analysis was used to build prediction models, in order to study the effect of different recycled material addition levels (the function of $R_m$(F, S, G) was used and be a representative of the content of recycled materials, such as fly ash, slag and glass) on the compressive strength and UPV of cement mortar. The calculated results are in accordance with laboratory-measured data, which are the mortar compressive strength and UPV of various mix proportions. From the comparison between the prediction analysis values and test results, the coefficient of determination $R^2$ and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) value of compressive strength are 0.970-0.988 and 5.57-8.84%, respectively. Furthermore, the $R^2$ and MAPE values for UPV are 0.960-0.987 and 1.52-1.74%, respectively. All of the $R^2$ and MAPE values are closely to 1.0 and less than 10%, respectively. Thus, the prediction models established in this study have excellent predictive ability of compressive strength and UPV for recycled materials applied in cement mortar.
