In recent years, problems of industrial solid wastes appear to be kind of national crises, caused by a sudden increase in their quantities, lack of disposal technique, and public discontent in installing plants for their disposal. This study is designed to investigate that pozzolana-based materials, such as blast furnace slag, fly-ash, paper sludge-ash, which are produced from industries as solid wastes, can be used as construction materials. The variations of concrete strength in function of compositional differences of raw materials including the wastes are studied experimentally. As a result, we find out that the blast furnace slag, the fly-ash, and the paper sludge-ash can be recycled as useful resources for replacement of cements by adjusting their substitution ratio.
A great difference in drainage time was observed from the recycled stocks between corrugated container board and its component papers, liner and medium paper. It could be assumed that the different drainage property should be caused from a starch adhesive present in the corrugated board. Thus, three types of starch such as dried Stein-Hall adhesive, cooked starch solution, and its dried film were added to linerboard stock in order to investigate the mechanism of drainage reduction. The water-swollen starch particles derived from Stein-Hall adhesive were drastically deteriorated the drainage time, even though the amount of starch is very small (2% or below). The drainage time of OCC was improved by 25% when amylase was used a new biological treatment. The results from the lab and mill test showed that the starch-degradable enzymatic treatment improves the drainage property as well as the reduction of calcium hardness.
The trend of using more hardwood and recycled fibers, and closing more tightly of the paper mill white water system has resulted in build-up of fines as well as organic and inorganic contaminants in the white water. This changes in papermaking wet end requires developing chemical additive system that provides good fiber retention and drainage in closed white water system. In this study the effect of charge densities and chemical characteristics of microparticle systems consisted of cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols on drainage and retention have been examined. Results showed that higher charge density of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica sol gave better retention and drainage. Particularly highly structured silica gave greater retention efficiency.
This study has conducted greenhouse gas emission reduction test as using Oyster-shells originated PCC paper filler compare to non-Oyster shells used PCC. This examination was estimated and calculated in accordance with both IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD). The greenhouse gas emission reduction estimation result indicates that, when oyster shells are recycled and used as paper filler, it reduces $27.97tCO_2\;per\;100\;ton$ of oyster shells. It is greenhouse gas emission $44.27tCO_2$ from PCC production changed to carbon emission reduction when replaced with oyster shell. LNG greenhouse gas emission $16.3tCO_2$ in relation to the pre-treatment with oyster shell per 100 ton is also reflected. As a result, it is assumed that roughly $0.2797tCO_2/oyster\;shell{\cdot}ton$.
The blended enzymes were applied for OCC recycling system to use the selective activities of various enzymes. Cellulase and hemicellulase were very effective in terms of the strength of recycled paper The effect of the addition of amylase on the drainage improvement indicates that the starch, which was used as an adhesive of corrugated container, deteriorates the drainage property in OCC recycling system. From the result of Scheffe's analysis, the combination of cellulase and amylase (50/50, w/w) were the most effective in improving the drainage properties with increased strength.
Today's paper industry tries to use greater amount of high yield pulp and recycled fiber and to close mill water system, which results in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water system. Researches are being focused to develop chemical additives that provide good retention and drainage in a closed papermaking system. A microparticle retention system consisted of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica so has been developed to meet the requirements for improving machine speed and product quality. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of the degree of cationic guar gums, charge density and structure of anionic colloidal silica sols, and the degree of system closure on the performances of this microparticle retention system. Cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols with higher charge densities showed better retention performance. Particularly, wider maximum in retention was obtained when structure colloidal silica was used suggesting as mechanism of microparticle bridging is functioning in this system.
In recent years, it had focused on the improvement of paper properties by addition of NFC (Nano-fibrillated Cellulose). Although the addition of NFC to wet-end of papermaking process could be suggested as a new solution to improve the strength properties of paper, it was not possible to avoid the bad drainage caused by the added NFC's chocking pores of wet web. Instead of the direct addition to wet-end, spraying of NFC to web in wire-section was tried in this study and evaluated by checking various paper properties including surface smoothness, tensile strength, folding endurance and stiffness. According to the increase of spraying amount of NFC, above mentioned paper properties were enhanced without excessive deterioration of drainage. Compared with direct introduction to wet-end, spraying could be regarded as a more proper method to enhance the surface smoothness and strength properties of paper.
A lot of water is using in the paper mill for dilution, washing, sealing, and other process operation. As the regulation of water environment has been more tightened than ever before, water management in the paper mill becomes the most important task. Topics on reducing fresh water and increasing recycling water have been studied. Further, an interest in zero-effluent system has been increased. The pH of waste water in paper mill is usually weak acidic or neutral. The waste water in the paper mill includes water insoluble organic materials that are not easy to be dissolved in the water, inorganic materials that never react with water and chemical additives that are used to recycled fiber. This study investigated on the effect of various materials used in paper mill on COD. This data could be used to control the environmental load in paper mill. COD caused by raw materials and NBDCOD (Non Bio Degradable COD) after the activated sludge process are investigated in this study. Results obtained in this study can be used in a simulation program designed to control environmental load in the paper mill.
Growth of any country rest in the consumption of industrial wastes for its infrastructure amenities. Countries like India positively desires a vital utilization of industrial waste resembling paper sludge in the construction industry to make various building materials. Also, it is the duty of all civil engineers or researchers to attach them in mounting new materials from the waste dumped as land fillings. In every construction project, about 70% of cost accounts for the procurement of materials. If this, can be minimized consequently the cost of construction will certainly be condensed. Research has established that the waste paper sludge can be reused in the construction field for a probable scope. The construction diligences munch through a massive quantity of non-renewable resources. On the additional dispense, more waste paper board sludge ends up in landfills or dumpsites than those recycled. Consequently, waste paper sludge for use as a construction material composes a step towards sustainable development. Keeping this in mind an endeavor has been made to utilize paper board sludge acquired from the paper board industry and used with several pozzolanic and cementitious materials for a specific purpose. The addition of paper sludge has been varied from 0% to 20% by weight of cement. The tests done with the samples expose that four samples showed significant outcomes with remarkable strength and durability properties which guide to move for the next phase of research for producing lightweight tiles.
In this paper, the flame-retardant wall paper was successfully prepared with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) short cut fiber with flame-retardant property and wood pulp using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binder followed by treatment of non-halogen flame retardant. Physical properties such as formation index, tensile strength, elongation, and burst strength increased as defibrillation increased except tear strength. Bulk increased but formation index, tensile strength, elongation and burst strength decreased along with addition of PET short cut fiber. It was also found that tear strength rose significantly up to 30% of PET short cut fiber and then declined (fell) rapidly. As addition level of PVA increased tensile strength, elongation and burst strength increased, but tear strength decreased slightly. Addition of 20% of PET short cut fiber and 13% of PVA provided the flame-retardant wall paper with both improved flameproofing and physical properties.
