  • The life changes of TMJ patients were evaluated through the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) questionnaire. 33 recurred TMD patients and 32 new TMD patients were studied at the TMJ clinics, Department of Oral Medicine, PNUH from September 2005 to August 2006. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The life change unit(LCU) totals in the recurred TMD patients were significantly higher than those in the control subjects, during the $7{\sim}12$ months before presentation for the hospital. 2. The life change unit(LCU) totals in the recurred TMD patients were higher a little than those in the control subjects during a year before presentation for the hospital. 3. There was no significant difference in LCU totals and life events between the recurred TMD patients and the control subjects by age. 4. There was no significant difference in LCU totals and life events between the married group and unmarried group in the subjects.

  • A 33-year-old man presented to the physician with epigastric discomfort. Computed tomography of the chest and echocardiography showed a mass in the left atrium; this mass was resected and diagnosed as myxoma. 12 months later, myxoma recurred in the right atrium, and it was resected without recurrence for 10 months until now. As there are only a few reports on recurred right atrial myxoma after left atrial myxoma, we report here on successful surgical removal of a recurred right atrial myxoma after resection of left atrial myxoma.

  • Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) in ankle is relatively uncommon. This disorder results in increased proliferation of synovium causing villous or nodular changes containing histiocytes, fibroblasts, multinucleated giant cell, and hemosiderin. PVNS is classified into two different type : localized and diffuse. Diffuse type of PVNS in ankle is more common than localized type. Also, recurrence of diffuse type is more frequent. We report a case of diffuse type of PVNS which was recurred soon after the excision.

  • Hemangiopericytomas, which used to be classified as the subtype of the meningiomas, like the angioblastic meningiomas or hemangiopericytic meningiomas, are rare in the central nervous system with an incidence of <1% of all central nervous system(CNS) tumors. In spite of a total surgical removal, hemangiopericytomas have a tendency of high local recurrence and distant metastasis. The authors report a case of hemaniogipericytoma recurred at the remote area from the primary site. The tumor recurred in the meninges of right temporal area after total removal of the tumor in the right parasaggital region including the falx.

  • Radiofrequency thermocoagulation of the gasserian ganglion is a safe procedure that can be controlled well and provides satisfactory pain relief from trigeminal neuralgia with low risk. Here the authors report a case of radiofrequency thermocoagulation performed on a recurred trigeminal neuralgia patient, with particular attention to the V3 area. The patient was treated with microvascular decompression 7 years previous, which lead to untolerable side effects from carbamazepine medication. Following the paresthesia and masseter muscle contracture test at 50 Hz-0.06 volt and 2 Hz-0.5 volt respectively, RF lesionings were performed for 60 sec at $60^{\circ}C$ and 70 sec at $70^{\circ}C$. One week after the procedure, the pain was reduced with a mild hypoesthesia in the V2 area. After 6 months, the pain recurred. Therefore, we performed the same procedure again. After 8-months of follow-up, there has been no pain or complications.

  • A case of a peroneal nerve palsy caused by repeatedly recurred intraneural ganglion cyst is presented. A 19 year old male suffered from tingling sensation on the foot dorsum more than one year and underwent two times of mass excision and nerve palsy was recorvered. But it was recurred once more after 10 months after the second excision. The mass was located in the fibro-osseous tunnel against the fibular neck and the origin of the peroneus longus. The third complete excision was done and full recovery was obtained in 6 months.

  • Personality characteristics of recurred TMD patients were analyzed psychologically by using the SCL-90-R. 27 recurred TMD patients, 45 new TMD patients, control I were subjected at Orofacial pain clinic, Department Of Oral Medicine and Health Promotion Center, Pusan National University Hospital during the period from 2005 to 2006. 50 general dental patients, control II were subjected at a local dental office in Pusan during the same period. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Mean values of T-scores on 9 basic scales in all the groups were within normal range. 2. The T-scores of IS, Dep, Phob, Psy in general Dental patient group were significantly higher than those in recurred TMD patient group. 3. As compared with recurred TMD patient Group & control I group by sexual subclass, there was no significant difference of the scales. 4. As compared with acute and chronic groups, there was no significant difference of the scales in recurred TMD patient group. However, the T-scores of Som, Par, Phob, Psy in chronic new TMD patient group were significantly higher than those in acute new TMD patient group, control I group.

  • Thyroid cancer, the most common cancer of endocrine neoplasms, has tremendous variation in tumor biologic behavior. There is no consensus about treatment mode to prevent recurrences despite of recent advance in understanding characteristics of thyroid cancer. So, we have made a clinical analysis and follow-up study of recurred 27 cases among 189 cases treated under the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma in the department of surgery, Chonnam University Hospital from February, 1982 to February, 1992 to clarify our experience about the characteristics of recurred thyroid cancer. The results were as follow: According to the pathological classification of recurred thyroid cancer, recurrence rate was 11.6% in papillary carcinoma, 15.6% in follicular carcinoma, 37.5% in medullary carcinoma, 66.7% in undifferentiated carcinoma, respectively, and the mean recurrence rate of thyroid cancer was 14.3%. The recurrence rate according to age was 28.6% in 8th decade and 17.9% in 4th decade. The recurrence rate according to sex was not singificant(15.6% in male: 14% in female). The mean period to relapse was 4 years 6 months in papillary carcinoma, 2 years 5 months in follicular carcinoma, 2 years 1 months in medullary carcinoma, 2 years 6 months in undifferentiated carcinoma. The recurrence rate according to previous operating methods, such as performing lymph node dissection or not, mode of thyridectomy, type of lymph node dissection was statisfically non-specific. Common recurrent sites of papillary and follicular carcinoma was cervical lymph node and remained thyroid tissue. Medullary and undifferentiated carcinoma was noted in multiregional or systemic involvement Reoperation was performed with complete resection of recurred or metastatic mass, such as radical neck dissection or mass extirpation from involved organs as possible. The postoperative complications were 2 cases of horseness, and 1 case with hematoma, transient hypocalcemia, wound infection, and pulmonary insufficency, respectively. 5-year survival rate was 85.5% in papillary carcinoma, 66.7% in follicular carcinoma. 50% in medullary carcinoma, and 50% in undifferentiated carcinoma. We concluded that recurrence in thyroid cancer give a reconsideration to previous conservative therapy and more extensive surgical procedures for thyroid cancer including lymphatic dissection are recommanded to prevent recurrences in selected cases if possible.

  • Purpose: It is estimated that the odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) makes up 10% to 12% of all developmen-tal odontogenic cysts. The lesion has been of particular interest because of its specific histopathologic fea-ture, high recurrence rate, and aggressive behavior. Materials and Methods: We investigated 266 OKCs of Korean patients for the sex of patient, the age of the patient, the location of OKC, the recurrence rate related to radiographic impression. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.47:1, showing a slight male predilection. Odontogenic keratocysts had a peak of occurrence in the third decade of life. The mandibular angle and ascending ramus area (49.6%) is the most frequent site of OKCs in the jaws. Fourteen cases of unilocular (12%) and 5 cases of multilocular (20%) OKCs recurred. Thirteen cases of smooth (12.9%) and 6 cases of lobulated (14.6%) OKCs recurred. Seventeen cases of OKCs without perforation of cortical bone (12.5%) and 2 cases of OKCs with perforation of cortical bone (33.3%) recurred. Fifteen people of patients with single lesion (12.2%) and 4 people of patients with multiple lesions (66.7%) recurred. Conclusion: In this resul, we consider multiple odontogenic keratocysts can recur more easily. So we have to treat them more carefully and need long-time follow-ups.
