In the present paper, turbulent open-channel flows with alternate vegetated zones are numerically simulated using threedimensional model. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes Equations are solved with the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The CFD code developed by Olsen(2004) is used for the present study. For model validation, the partly vegetated channel flows are simulated, and the computed depth-averaged mean velocity and Reynolds stress are compared with measured data in the literature. Comparisons reveal that the present model successfully predicts the mean flow and turbulent structures in vegetated open-channel. However, it is found that the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model cannot accurately predict the momentum transfer at the interface between the vegetated zone and the non-vegetated zone. It is because the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is the isotropic turbulence model. Next, the open channel flows with alternate vegetated zones are simulated. The computed mean velocities are compared well with the previously reported measured data. Good agreement between the simulated results and the experimental data was found. Also, the turbulent flows are computed for different densities of vegetation. It is found that the vegetation curves the flow and the meandering flow pattern becomes more obvious with increasing vegetation density. When the vegetation density is 9.97%, the recirculation flows occur at the locations opposite to the vegetation zones. The impacts of vegetation on the flow velocity and the water surface elevation are also investigated.
In this work, we proposed the three different reactor systems for evaluating of synthetic natural gas(SNG) processes using the synthesis gas consisting of CO and $H_2$ and reactor systems to be considered are series adiabatic reaction system, series adiabatic reaction system with the recirculation and cooling wall type reaction system. The maximum temperature of the first adiabatic reactor in series adiabatic reaction system raised to 800. From the these results, carbon dioxide in product gas as compared to other systems was increased more than that expected due to water gas shift reaction(WGSR) and the maximum $CH_4$ concentration in SNG was 90.1%. In series adiabatic reaction system with the recirculation as a way to decrease the temperature in catalyst bed, the maximum $CH_4$ concentration in SNG was 96.3%. In cooling wall type reaction system, the reaction heat is absorbed by boiling water in the shell and the reaction temperature is controlled by controlling the amount of flow rate and pressure of feed water. The maximum $CH_4$ concentration in SNG for cooling wall type reaction system was 97.9%. The main advantage of the cooling wall type reaction system over adiabatic systems is that potentially it can be achieve almost complete methanation in one reactor.
In this study, three pilot-scale wetland systems were built for treating stormwater runoff from asphalt road. Each of the system consists of a settling tank and a vertical flow wetland packed with 25%, 50%, and 75% woodchip as treatment media. According to the analysis of the distributions of particle size, it was found that solids ranging in size $0.52-30{\mu}m$ were predominant in the stormwater runoff. After 24-hours settling, those coarser than $20{\mu}m$ were significantly detained. Further retention, especially for the finer-sized fraction, occurred in the wetland through internal recirculation during the dry day periods. As a primary media of the wetland, woodchip showed a high filtration and attachment capacity for the particulates in pre-settled stormwater, whereas overall amount of solids in the wetland effluent increased due to the detachment of woody elements from the media. This was observed mainly during the initial 75 days of operation, and the size and detachment rate were found to be strongly related with the woodchip packing ratio. The mechanism involving woody particle detachment was modeled as a first-order form. In addition, water quality factors and operational parameters affecting the detachment were analyzed and discussed.

This study is about atherosclerosis which occupies the highest rate in many diseases people have and we have studied about atherosclerosis for abdominal aorta. Atherosclerosis is the phenomenon which blood vessel gets narrower, harder and thicker due to the stenosis of colesterol in blood vessel. If it becomes worse, arteries will be hard and blood can't flow smoothly, and even it can reach to death. In this study, the geometric models of the considered stenotic blood flow are two different types of constriction of cross-sectional area of blood vessel; 20 and 45% of constriction in each elastic wall and rigid wall. We have modeled by using finite element method to observe the changes of velocity and pressure. In case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in elastic wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20% and in case of the diameter of blood vessel decreased 45% in rigid wall model, the values of velocity and pressure were higher than the case of 20%. In cases of elastic wall models of the diameters of blood vessels decreased each of 20% and 45%, recirculation zones appeared. This results show understanding of hemodynamic properties depending on stenosed blood vessels.

The outdoor coal storage sheds of thermal power plants are being converted to indoor coal storage sheds worldwide because of the environmental pollution problems in the surrounding areas. On the other hand, indoor coal storage sheds are causing problems, such as indoor coal scattering and harmful gas generation. In this study, the ventilation method of indoor coal storage sheds was analyzed in terms of the internal flow characteristics and ventilation according to the outside wind velocity and direction. CFD analysis was performed based on the actual flow measurement information inside the indoor coal storage sheds. A comparison of the wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s when the outside wind direction was easterly showed that the stream velocity to the monitor louver was faster and the recirculation area was clearer at 6 m/s than at 2 m/s. In addition, the trend of a westerly wind was similar to that of the easterly wind. The ventilation rate according to the wind speed was 13.1 times and 4.4 times for a wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s, respectively. If the wind speed is 2 m/s, the situation does not meet the required number of ventilations per hour in a general plant, and needs to be improved.
In this study, hydraulic characteristics of thalweg line occurred near the single groyne and recirculation zone around downstream of the structure were discussed from the experiments which conducted in fixed flat-bed channel flume. The thalweg line is the stream line where the maximum velocity occurs and flow separation appeared at the tip of groyne changes the thalweg alignment. In this study, the variations in flow fields which were caused by different length and permeability of groyne were measured by LSPIV(Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry), and also the characteristics of thalweg line and separation area were analyzed. From these results, it is found that length to thalweg line from the channel wall $T_{CL}$ and height of separation area $S_h$ vary the channel width up to 75%, 50% in the change of length and permeability of groyne, however the Froude number does not affect on $T_{CL}$ and $S_h$. Velocity along the thalweg $U_{CL}$ Increased by twice the mean velocity, and the maximum velocity occurred in downstream where the distance $5{\sim}6$ times of groyne length away from the groyne, which does not get affected by length and permeability of groyne and Froude number.

The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of $NO_x$ and soot emissions under a wide range of engine load have been experimentally investigated by a water-cooled, four-cylinder, indirect injection, four cycle and marine diesel engine operating at two kinds of engine speeds. The simultaneous control of $NO_x$ and soot emissions in diesel engines is targeted in this study. The EGR system is used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system which has 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles in 1.0 mm diameter) is specially designed and manufactured to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines. The intake oxygen concentration and the mean equivalence ratio calculated by the intake air flow and fuel consumption rate, and the exhaust oxygen concentration measured are used to analyse and discuss the influences of EGR rate on $NO_x$ and soot emissions. The experiments are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions are decreased and soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake oxygen concentration and exhaust oxygen concentration, and the rise of equivalence ratio as the EGR rate rises.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is an emission control technology allowing significant NOx emission reduction from light-and heavy duty diesel engines. The future EGR type, dual loop EGR, combining features of high pressure loop EGR and low pressure loop EGR, was developed and optimized by using a commercial engine simulation program, GT-POWER. Some variables were selected to control dual loop EGR system such as VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger)performance, especially turbo speed, flap valve opening diameter at the exhaust tail pipe, and EGR valve opening diameter. Applying the dual loop EGR system in the light-duty diesel engine might cause some problems, such as decrease of engine performance and increase of brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC). So proper EGR rate (or mass flow) control would be needed because there are trade-offs of two types of the EGR (HPL and LPL) features. In this study, a diesel engine under dual loop EGR system was optimized by using design of experiment (DoE). Some dominant variables were determined which had effects on torque, BSFC, NOx, and EGR rate. As a result, optimization was performed to compensate the torque and BSFC by controlling start of injection (SOI), injection mass and EGR valves, etc.

This paper presents a case history on failures of impeller and shaft due to pressure pulsation at single stage feed water pumps in 700 MW nuclear power plant during commissioning operation. The pumps had been service and had run for approximately $40{\sim}50$ hours. For the most part, the failures of impeller occurred with the presence of a number of fatigue cracks. All cracks were associated with the deleterious surface layer of impeller by visual and metallurgical examination. On-site testing and analytical approach was performed on the systems to diagnose the problem and develop a solution to reduce the effect of exciting sources. A major concern at high-energy centrifugal pump is the pressure pulsation created from trailing edge of the Impeller blade, flow separation and recirculation at centrifugal pumps of partial load. Pressure pulsation due to the interaction generating between impeller and casing coincided with natural frequencies of the impeller and shaft system during 1ow load operation. It was identified that dynamic stress exceeding the fatigue strength of the material at the thin shroud section due to the hydraulic instability at running condition below BEP.
The well-mixed room model has been traditionally used to predict the concentrations of contaminants in indoor environments. However, this is inappropriate because the flow fields in many indoor environments distribute contaminants non-uniformly, due to imperfect air mixing. Thus, some means used to describe an imperfectly mixed room are needed. The simplest model that accounts for imperfect air mixing is a two-zone model. Therefore, this study on development of computer program far the two-zone model is carried out to propose techniques of estimating the concentration of contaminants in the room. To do this, an important consideration is to divide a room into two-zone, i.e. the lower and upper zone assuming that the air and contaminants are well mixed within each zone. And between the zones the air recirculation is characterized through the air exchange parameter. By this basic assumption, the equations for the conservation of mass are derived for each zone. These equations are solved by using the computational technique. The language used to develope the program is a VISUAL BASIC. The value of air exchange coefficient($f_12$) is the most difficult to forecast when the concentrations of contaminants in an imperfectly mixed room are estimated by the two-zone model. But, as the value of $f_12$ increases, the air exchange between each zone increases. When the value of $f_12$ is approximately 15, the concentrations in both zone approach each other, and the entire room may be approximately treated as a single well-mixed room. Therefore, this study is available for designing of the ventilation to improve the air quality of indoor environments. Also, the two-zone model produces the theoretical base which may be extended to the theory for the multi-zone model, that will be contributed to estimate the air pollution in large enclosures, such as shopping malls, atria buildings, atria terminals, and covered sports stadia.
