  • In the ship-building industry, reciprocating air condensing compressors are usually applied in the HVAC system because of their good performance, efficiency and the convenience. However, the inertia force and pressure fluctuation of the compressor may generate unexpected excessive noise and vibration in the near by cabins. This paper presents a theoretical background and appropriate countermeasures on the reduction of structure-borne noise from the compressors.

  • This paper presents numerical and experimental methods of investigating dynamic characterisics of reed valves of hermetic reciprocating compressors. For the natural frequency, two different techniques have been tried : microphone method and strain gage method. In the microphone method, acoustic pressure signals from excited valves have been analyzed, while signals of tiny strain gauge attached on the reed valves have been utilized in the strain gage method. The empirically determined natural frequencies have been compared to the ones calculated by finite element method. Reasonably good agreements between the experimental and numerical results have been found, implying that the natural frequencies of reed valves could be obtained by FFM alone with enough accuracy.

  • The compressors in the air conditioner have the role of the pressurization and circulation of the refrigerant. The hermetic reciprocating compressors driven by rotary motor have been used for the air conditioner. The linear compressor has very simple structure and enhancement in the efficiency in comparison to that of conventional reciprocating compressor. The linear compressors are widely used for the small cryogenic refrigerator (below 1 kW), such as the Stirling refrigerator and pulse tube refrigerator. In the cryogenic application, the pressure ratio of the linear compressor is below 1.5, but the linear compressor for the air conditioner should overcome the high pressure ratio and the large pressure difference between the each sides of the piston. The resonance characteristics of the linear compressor has the significant impacts on the power consumption. To minimize the power consumption, the linear compressor should be operated at the resonance point. In the resonance characteristics, the role of the mechanical and gas spring should be considered. In present study, the cycle of the analysis of the vapor compression refrigeration cycle with the different refrigerants (R134a, R4l0a, R600a) and the designs of the linear compressor are performed. The effects of the stiffness of the mechanical spring on the electromagnetic forces would be discussed. Finally, the results show the design specification of the linear compressor for the air conditioner.

  • Thermodynamic and dynamic analysis has been conducted to investigate performance variations induced by substitution of alternative refrigerants, HFC134a or HC600a for CFC12 in hermetic reciprocating compressors. For the thermodynamic analysis, mass and energy conservation laws are applied to the cylinder volume and Helmholtz resonator modeling method is adopted to describe gas pulsations at suction and discharge system. The modeling of the dynamics of the compressor mechanism has been performed with lumped mass method to analyse the bearing loads and friction losses at each bearing. To verify the correctness of this analysis, results of the performance simulation have been compared to those of calorimetric measurrements of compressor operating with CFC12. Analysis of the various losses, noise and reliability as well as performance has been conducted to present the design guideline for the compressor development with alternative refrigerants. It is found that compressors with alternative refrigerants, HFC 134a or HC600a give better COPs than those with CFC12 under the same operating conditions and especially, compressors with HC600a show better reliability and noise characteristics also.

  • This paper presents numerical method of investigating flow characteristics of reed valves of reciprocating compressors. The numerically determined effective flow areas agreed within $5.4\%$ of those obtained from experimental measurements. Reasonably good agreements between the experimental and numerical results have been found, implying that the effective flow and force areas of reed valves could be obtained by CFD alone with enough accuracy. A computer simulation of reciprocating compressor has been performed using a numerical results of reed valves. The calculated P-V diagram shows a good agreement with experimental result.

  • The reciprocating compressors are widely used in industrial fields for its simplicity in principle and high efficiency. But the design of it requires rigorous experiments due to its high dependence on many design parameters. In this work, a mathematical model is developed so that we can analyze the gas-solid interaction during the whole working processes of a reciprocating compressor. The governing equations, which represent the fluid-solid interaction, was derived from the unsteady Bernoulli's equation with the assumption of quasi-steady working process. The valve itself was assumed to be a one degree of freedom spring-mass-damper system. A simple thermodynamic relation, the ideal gas state equation, was used to give it an external force term assuming that the refrigerant behaves like an ideal gas. It was suggested to use a motor of higher driving frequency to enhance the performance of the reciprocating compressor without causing a faster failure of the valve.

  • For large reciprocating compressors in parallel operation, an analytical study has been carried out on the gas pulsation in associated discharge piping lines. Since the pressure pulsation at a valve, valve dynamics, and the gas flow rate through the valve are interrelated, affecting one another, these need to be solved simultaneously. Acoustic transfer matrix method, which relates acoustic pressure and velocity at one location to those at another location, has been adopted to calculate the effect of the gas flow at one valve location on the gas pulsation at other valve locations.

  • With the difficulties in increasing the efficiency of conventional crank-driven compressors due to mechanical loss, compressor manufacturers have investigated new kinds of compressor such as a free piston compressor mechanism. This study investigates the energy efficiency of two different types of compressor for a household refrigerator. One is the conventional crank-driven compressor, and the other one is a linear compressor. The energy efficiencies of these compressors are evaluated. Experimental results show that the linear compressor has 10% lower power consumption than the brushless direct-current (BLDC) reciprocating compressor. The linear compressor demonstrates excellent energy efficiency by reducing the friction loss. Furthermore, a motor efficiency exceeding 90% is achieved by using a linear oscillating mechanism with a moving magnet. Additionally, the compressor stroke to piston diameter ratio of the oscillating piston in the linear compressor can be adjusted in order to modulate the cooling capacity of the compressor for improved system efficiency.

  • The screw compressor is first invented by a Swedish engineer, Alf Lysholm in 1934. Since then, the development of the screw compressor idea for industrial applications has been continued by the Swedish research organization Svenska Rotor Maskiner, often identified by its initials SRM. The first industrial application of the machine was marketed as an air compressor in the 1950s. The screw compressor which is a positive displacement type compressor compresses gases by the rotation of a pair of mating rotors. The operation of this compressor is entirely rotary and dynamically in balance. Also there is no need for any valve mechanism and there exists less mechanical wear between the parts compared to the conventional reciprocating compressors. Due to these prominent features, the screw compressor has been rapidly spread into the air compressor market replacing the conventional reciprocating compressors and begun to be applied as a refrigerant compressor since the 1960s. In this work, the operation principle of the screw compressor is described in brief and the major design parameters affecting the compressor performance are classified. The international research trend in screw compressor development is introduced and the current situation in our country is described.

  • Today, although there have been high technical developments of a compressor in the respect of its capacity, it has been so hard to develop in the respect of vibration and noise because mechanical structure of it has originally numerous vibration and noise. However, if we can grasp the point of systematic phenomena of vibration and noise through the understanding of dynamic characteristics in mechanical equipment, it may be possible to consider countermeasures. In this study about a reciprocal compressor, the part of its machinery is modeled as rigid body, and the part of its spring is modeled as flexible body, and then they are analyzed by DADS. Each rigid body and spring are connected with joint torque of a motor is applied to shaft, and pressure is applied to a piston so that a compressor can be revolved. Based on this modeling, influence of a compressor's vibration is analyzed through changes of offset, connecting rod and crank radius In the case of weight balance, it I produced after re-design, and then changes of vibration of a compressor's inside are checked through experiments. These analysis data may help set measures of reducing vibration of a reciprocal compressor.
