It is important to extract and assess low-flow recession characteristics for water resources management in the upper reaches of a stream. It is difficult to express the groundwater flow recession characteristics for streamflow synthetically. The linear recession model has been widely used by baseflow recession analysis for reason of simplicity and convenience, but recent studies show that nonlinear recession models fit well, and the relationship between the reservoir storage of shallow unconfined aquifers and the groundwater discharge was to be identified as nonlinear in the literature based on the analysis of numerous streamflow recession curves. The objective of the study is to decode these nonlinear characteristics, including evaporation loss, storage, and recharge of groundwater using streamflow. By analyzing the observed time series of streamflow from the study area, which is the Pyeongchang River basin in Korea, the main components of the underlying groundwater balance, namely, discharge, evaporation loss, storage, and recharge, can be identified and quantified. As a result of the study, depletion of groundwater by evapotranspiration losses through the water uptake of tree roots was found to bias the recession curves and the estimated reservoir parameters. The seasonality of both rainfall and potential evaporation, analysis of the recession curves, stratified according to time of the year, allowed the quantification of evapotranspiration loss as a function of a calendar month and stored groundwater storage.
The processes and rates of groundwater recharge were studied by long-term monitoring of groundwater level and isotopic compositions of precipitation, surface water and groundwater in the Yeosu area. The isotopic compositions of surface water and groundwater were directly related to the precipitation event. It is also shown that the minimum amount of precipitation for infiltration to groundwater is about 20mm. The isotopic variations of groundwater shows that the Isotopic composition of groundwater changed by each precipitation event between June and Sep. 2000 is gradually changed without input of precipitation again. It indicates that the groundwater recharged from the upper part is mixed with the groundwater in reservoir. The infiltration rate of first precipitation event after a dry season is estimated to be 16.5% using isotopic mixing equations. It is expected that the groundwater recharge rate could be estimated more quantitavely, if the isotopic method is combined with the conservative methods.
In this paper it is outlined the methodology of estimating the parameters of water balance analysis method for calculating recharge, using ground water level rises in monitoring well when values of specific yield of aquifer are not available. This methodology is applied for two monitoring wells of the case study area in northern area of the Jeiu Island. A water balance of soil layer of plant rooting zone is computed on a daily basis in the following manner. Diect runoff is estimated by using SCS method. Potential evapotranspiration calculated with Penman-Monteith equation is multiplied by crop coefficients($K_c$) and water stress coefficient to compute actual evapotranspiration(AET). Daily runoff and AET is subtracted from the rainfall plus the soil water storage of the previous day. Soil water remaining above soil water retention capacity(SWRC) is assumed to be recharge. Parameters such as the SCS curve number, SWRC and Kc are estimated from a linear relationship between water level rise and recharge for rainfall events. The upper threshold value of specific yield($n_m$) at the monitoring well location is derived from the relationship between rainfall and the resulting water level rise. The specific yield($n_c$) and the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) are calculated from a linear relationship between observed water level rise and calculated recharge for the different simulations. A set of parameter values with maximum value of $R^2$ is selected among parameter values with calculated specific yield($n_c$) less than the upper threshold value of specific yield($n_m$). Results applied for two monitoring wells show that the 81% of variance of the observed water level rises are explained by calculated recharge with the estimated parameters. It is shown that the data of groundwater level is useful in estimating the parameter of water balance analysis method for calculating recharge.

To investigate the conditions of groundwater resources In Jeonju, Wanju, and Goksung, a basic groundwater survey was performed. From the survey, various useful informations such as groundwater use, waterlevel distribution, water chemistry were obtained. This study focused on the analysis of the water levels, which were automatically monitored with pressure transducers or manually measured. The monitorings were conducted for both shallow wells completed in alluvial aquifers and deep wells in bedrock aquifers. The automatically monitored waterlevels for alluvial aquifer were also used for estimation of recharge in the study area. This study presents results of the investigation.

To delineate the internal structures of alluvial aquifer, high resolution seismic and GPR methods were adopted in Buyeo Gunsu-Ri area. The result of seismic refraction survey shows the water table of the aquifer and the result of seismic reflection reveals the basement and somewhat dominant internal structures of alluvial aquifer. The internal heterogeneity due to variations in channel behavior can be delineated using GPR survey. GPR profiles for the point bar deposits near Buyeo county reveals two different stratigraphic units the lower inclined heterogeneous strata and the upper horizontally stratified strata. According to the increase of demand for water resource using artificial recharge in alluvium, it is believed that the information acquired by high resolution geophysical methods will have an important roles for the effective and sustainable development and usage of groundwater in alluvial aquifer.
Average hydraulic conductivity was $2.64{\times}10^{-8}m/sec$ average RQD was 78%, average porosity was 0.51%, and range of groundwater level was $77.06{\sim}125.97m$ by measured in 8 boreholes at the Surak Mt. tunnel area. Groundwater level of two peaks in the Surak Mt. tunnel area were estimated through linear regression analysis for groundwater level versus elevation. And, average horizontal hydraulic gradient in the Surak Mt. tunnel area was calculated 0.267. Minimum, maximum, and average hydraulic conductivities that estimated by field tests were $5.56{\times}10^{-9}m/sec,\;6.12{\times}10^{-8}m/sec,\;and\;2.64{\times}10^{-8}m/sec$, respectively. Groundwater discharge rates per 1 meter that estimated using minimum, maximum, and average hydraulic conductivities and average horizontal hydraulic gradient were $0.00585m^2/day,\;0.06434m^2/day,\;and\;0.02775m^2/day$, respectively. Pure groundwater recharge rate per unit recharge area was calculated 223.96 mm/yr through water balance analysis. Prediction simulation of groundwater level fluctuation with minimum, maximum, and average hydraulic conductivities were conducted. Discharge rate into the Surak Mt. tunnel for minimum hydraulic conductivity was small, but groundwaer drawdown was highly. Discharge rate into the Surak Mt. tunnel for maximum hydraulic conductivity was higher, but groundwaer level was recovered quickly.
In this study, a semi-analytical model to address groundwater level fluctuations in response to precipitations and its infiltration is developed through mathematical modeling based on water balance equation. The developed model is applied to a prediction of groundwater level fluctuations in Hongcheon area. The developed model is calibrated through a nonlinear parameter estimator by using daily precipitation rates and groundwater fluctuations data of a same year 2003. The calibrated input parameters are directly applied to the prediction of groundwater fluctuations of year 2004 and the simulated curve successfully mimics the observed. The developed model is also applied to practical problems such as a prediction of a effect of reduced recharge due to surface coverage change and a induced water level reduction. Through this study, we found that recharge to precipitation ratio is not a constant and may be a function of a precipitation pattern.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to reduce the fire of the same type by analyzing the form which is mainly generated based on the result of the fire investigation through the experiment to reproduce, since the candle fire is repeated every year with the same type. Methods: For the analysis of candle flame, 4 kinds of methods such as acrylic recharge test, FOMEX acrylic recharge test, general combustible recharge test, and natural fire extinguishing test of candle were conducted. Results: It was confirmed that continuous burning is difficult to be achieved without contact of combustible materials around. Conclusion: In order to prevent a candle fire, it is important to check the safety of the surrounding area. It is also considered to introduce safety regulations such as finishing with a fireproof material such as a silver foil at the terminal end.

Groundwater flow paths and groundwater ages at a radioactive waste repository located in a coastal area of South Korea were evaluated using the hydrochemical and hydrogeological characteristics of groundwater, surface water, rain water, and seawater, as well as by numerical modeling. The average groundwater travel time in the top layer of the model, evaluated by numerical modeling and groundwater age (34 years), approximately corresponds to the groundwater age obtained by chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-12 analysis (26-34 years). The data suggest that the groundwater in wells in the study area originated up-gradient at distances of 140-230 m. Results of CFC analyses, along with seasonal variations in the δ18O and δD values of groundwater and the relationships between 222Rn concentrations and δ18O values and between 222Rn concentrations and δD values, indicate that groundwater recharge occurs in the summer rainy season and discharge occurs in the winter dry season. Additionally, a linear relationship between dissolved SiO2 concentrations and groundwater ages indicates that natural mineralization is affected by the dilution of groundwater recharge in the rainy summer season.
Hydrogeological modelling was performed to evaluate groundwater flow system in Igsan Area. The study area extends over $790km^2$. The geology consists of Jurassic Daebo granite and gneissose granite and Precambrian metamorphic rocks. The capability of pumping yield is the highest in gneissose granite region among them due to comparatively thick weathered zone with thickness ranging from 10m to 25m. The Colorado State University Finite Difference Model was used for the model simulation. The model was divided into 28 rows and 31 columns with variable grid spacing. The model was calibrated under steady-state and unsteady-state conditions. In the steady-state simulation, the model results were compared with measured water table contours in September 1985 with determining hydraulic conductivities and net recharge rates during rainy season. Unsteady state simulation was done to know the aquifer response due to groundwater abstraction. The non- steady state calibration was conducted to determine the distribution and magnitudes of specific yields and discharge/recharge rates during dry season as matching water level altitudes in May 1986. The calibrated model was used to simulate water level vaiation caused by groundwater withdrawal and natural recharge from 1 October, 1985 until 30 September, 1995. The calibrated model can be used to groundwater development schemes on regional groundwater levels, but it cannot be used to simulate local groundwater level change at a specific site.
