Eddy Current and Ultrasonic IRIS Signal Characteristics of Reboiler Tube by Using STS 316L Calibration Specimen (STS 316L 교정시험편을 이용한 재가열기 튜브의 와전류신호와 초음파 IRIS 신호 특성)

  • In this study, a field applicability of reboiler tube was evaluated by comparing ECT signal with IRIS signal about wall loss rate and remaining wall thickness using worked austenite STS 316L ASME standard calibration tube. In the case of wall-loss rate, as a result, tolerance about $20%{\times}4$ flat bottom hole and 10% O D groove(ECT), 80% defect and 10% O D groove(IRIS) occurred up to ${\pm}15%$. In the case of remaining wall thickness, ECT was satisfied with the both tolerance, but tolerance about 80% defect occurred up to ${\pm}15%$ in IRIS. Therefore, if the IRIS is performed for interpretation of non-relevant indication and measurement of wall-loss rate after ECT, reliability is supposed to be improved.

  • Light Naphtha is distillated from crude oil unit and separated into the methane, ethylene and propylene by boiling point difference in sequence. This separation is conducted using a series of binary-like columns. This separation method is known that the energy consumed in the reboiler is used to separate the heaviest components and most of this energy is discarded as vapor condensation in the overhead cooler. In this study, the first two columns of the separation process are replaced with the Petlyuk column. A structural design was exercised by the stage computation with ideal tray efficiency in equilibrium condition. Compared with the performance of a conventional system of 3-column model, The design outcome shows that the procedure is simple and efficient because the composition of the liquid component in the column tray was designed to be similar to the equilibrium distillation curve. The performance of the new process indicates that an energy saving of 12.1% is obtained and the cost savings of 44 million won per day based on gross domestic product is reduced under same total number of trays and the initial investment cost is saved.

Separation Characteristics of Lactic Acid by Batch Reactive Distillation (회분식 반응 증류에 의한 lactic acid의 분리 특성)

  • Lactic acid was reacted with alcohol into lactate ester, and lactate ester produced in esterification reaction was distilled simultaneously with hydrolysis reaction into lactic acid. When the yields of lactic acid recovered by batch reactive distillations with various alcohols were compared, the yield of lactic acid was increased as the volatility of lactate ester was increased. In this batch reactive distillation, because the mixtures condensed in partial condensor were flown to reboiler through distillation column, the recovery yield of lactic acid was affected by operation temperature of partial condensor. Hydrolysis reaction into lactic acid in distillation column rarelyoccurred because of short retention time of lactate ester and water. Lactate ester was reacted into lactic acid in reboiler.

Optimization Study for the Design of Deethanizer Column (탈에탄탑 설계를 위한 공정 최적화에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, we have completed the simulation and optimization work for the deethanizer column which was used for natural gas processing plant or saturated gas plant in a petrochemical process. An optimal feed stage location which minimizes the reboiler heat duty was determined. For the modeling of deethanizer, PRO/II with PROVISION was used and Soave modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state model was selected. Through this study, we have found that the minimum number of stage and minimum reflux ratio for separation were 9.03 and 0.62437, respectively and the theoretical stage number was 12, optimal feed stage location was 9 and minimum reboiler heat duty was $12.7470{\times}10^6\;KJ/hr$.

A Study on the Optimization of Process for Ethanol Dehydration Azeotropic Distillation (에탄올 탈수 공비 증류공정 최적화에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, modeling and optimization work were performed to obtain nearly pure anhydrous ethanol from aqueous ethanol mixtures using benzene as an entrainer. NRTL liquid activity coefficient model was adopted for phase equilibrium calculations and PRO/II with PROVISION 6.01, a commercial process simulator, was used to simulate the azeotropic distillation process. We used the total reboiler heat duties as an objective function and the concentration of ethanol at concentrator top as a manipulated variable. As a result, 76 mole percent of ethanol at concentrator top gave an optimum value which minimized the total reboiler heat duties of three distillation columns.

  • Lactic acid is of interest as the raw materials of polyactide that is a biodegradable polymer. For an effective purification of acid, batch distillation with the simultaneous reactions was used. Two Oldershow colums and reboilers were usde for fractionation of methanol and reactions. Two Oldershaw columns and reboilers were used for fractionation of methanol and reactions. Esterification reaction of lactic with methanol produced methyllactate and water. The productes of the esterification reaction, methl lactate and water were transported to the reboiler of the reproysis part. In hydroduced in the hydrolysis part and nureacter method lactic acid and methanol. Methanol produced in the hydroysis part and unreacted method lactic acid and methanol in the esterification part were separated by distillation and recycled to the revoiler of the esterification part so that the esterification reaction would be stimulated. Thus, pure lactic acid solution remained in the reboiler of the hydroysis part. The effect of the number of stages in column on the recovery yield was also inverstigated. In the operation with colums improved the fractionation of componets and stimulated the reactions in two parts.

  • 1969년에 발간된 API521 1st edition에서는 Flare Load 저감용으로 적용되는 HIPS (High Integrity Protection System)는 모두 Pressure Safety Valve의 고장확률보다 낮은 SIL 3 (Safety Integrity Level)등급을 적용할 것을 요구하고 있다. Flare Stack 저감용 HIPS는 주로 압축기 출력압력상승, Reboiler Steam 과다주입, 전력공급중단냉각펌프고장 등에 의한 Flare 발생을 예방하기 위한 기능을 가진 SIF (Safety Instrumented Function)로 구성된다. 하지만 2007년도 발간된 API521 5th edition에서는 LOPA (Layer Of Protection Analysis) 분석을 통해 Target SIL을 도출하는 것으로 요구사항을 변경했다. 이에 따라 이번 연구에서는 Flare Load에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 시나리오 중 대표적인 시나리오를 대상으로 HAZOP(Hazard and Operability Study)과 LOPA분석을 실시해서 Target SIL이 어떻게 도출되는지를 연구했다. Flare Stack에서 Flare를 발생시키는 대표적인 시나리오들에 대해 LOPA분석을 실시한 결과 압축기 출력압력상승은 SIL 2, Reboiler Steam 과다주입은 SIL 3, 전력공급중단은 SIL 0, 냉각펌프고장은 SIL 0로 모두가 SIL 3 가 나오지는 않았다. SIF 설계 시 Target SIL을 만족시키는 것도 중요하지만 운전 시 SIL 등급이 계속 유지되게 하지 위해 인적오류, 시스템적 고장, 하드웨어고장 등에 의해 SIF 기능불능화가 되는 것을 예방하기 위한 기능안전관리시스템 (FSMS)를 적용하는 것도 중요하다.

Computer Simulation and Optimization Study on the Pressure-Swing Distillation of 1-propanol-benzene Mixture (1-프로판올과 벤젠 혼합물의 압력변환 증류공정을 통한 전산모사 및 공정 최적화)

  • Computer modeling and optimization works have been performed for the separation of the binary mixture of 1-propanol and benzene through a pressure-swing distillation. PRO/II with PRIVISION V10.0 at Schneider Electric company and NRTL liquid activity coefficient model were utilized. The sum of the total reboiler heat duties of the low-high and high-low pressure column configurations were compared. To minimize the utility consumptions, low column, and high column to obtain pure benzene at the top, the number of theoretical stages and optimal feed tray locations for each distillation column were determined and the reflux ratios for each distillation column were also adjusted. As a result of the optimization works, the sum of the total reboiler heat duties for the high-low and low-high pressure configurations were $3.10{\times}10^6kcal/h$ and $2.75{\times}10^6kcal/h$, respectively. In the case where heat integration was applied to low-high pressure configurations, 57.36 % of the total reboiler heat duties could be saved compared to the high-low pressure configurations.

Simulation of Benzene-Toluene-Xylene Plant (BTX제조공정의 모사연구)

  • This paper deals with modeling and simulation of an industrial benzene-toluene-xylene plant. Because the fractionation unit of benzene-toluene-xylene plant has a narrow range of boiling point and doesn't have any sidecut and side reboiler, we employed boiling point estimation method in the modeling and simulation of the plant. Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation was used in the computation of thermodynamical properties. We solved resulting nonlinear equations by using Newton-Raphson method which is known to show fast convergence. Results of simulation showed good agreement with actual plant operation data.
