An experimental study has been performed to investigate the process from nonequilibrium state to equilibrium state in redeveloping turbulent boundary layer beyond separation-reattachment using pitot tube and hot-wire anemometer. The model sued in the experiment has the form of a backward facing step which is assembled by a two-dimensional 4:1 half elipse and a plate. Measurements are carried out up to a distance of about 50 step height downstream of the step, where the reattachment observed at about x/h=6.5. The profiles of the shape factor H the Clauser parameter G and the coefficient of friction $C^{f}$ exhibited the characteristics similar to those of the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer from x/h=25, and the profiles of the trubulent quantities did from x/h=35. However, the wake region of the boundary layer does not seem to recover the equilibrium turbulent boundary layer even at x/h=50. By considering the distributions of the intermittency factor it has been noted that the turbulence structure changes gradually from a mixing layer to a turbulent boundary layer along downstream direction after reattachment. This becomes clearer as we analyse the one-dimensional energy spectra and the dissipation energy spectra which are measured and caculated at various downstream positions after the backward facing step.p.

The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical fence was investigated using the two-frame PTV system. The Reynolds number based on the fence height(H) was 2950. From this study, it is revealed that at least 400 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 100 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information. Various turbulence statistics such as turbulent intensities, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were calculated from 700 instantaneous velocity vector fields. The fence flow has an unsteady recirculation region behind the fence, followed by a slow relaxation to the flat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about 11.2H. There exists a region of negative Reynolds shear stress near the fence top due to the highly convex (stabilizing) streamline-curvature of the upstream flow. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have significant influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.

Erosion-corrosion in a pipe system often occurs at fittings, valves, and weld beads where flow separation and reattachment yield high turbulence intensity. Thus identifying their correlations would be the first step towards resolving the erosion-corrosion problems associated with industrial applications. Bremhorst of the Univ. of Queensland, Australia, proposed that a rotating cylinder with surface roughness (two backward-facing steps periodically mounted on a circular cylinder) be an economical and tractable tool which can generate extreme flow conditions for erosion-corrosion study. In this work, DNS has been carried out for turbulent flows around the same rotating cylinder as his experimental apparatus. Our result shows that a region of intense turbulence intensity and high wall-shear stress fluctuation is formed along the cylinder surface in the recirculating region behind the step, where high mass-transfer capacity is also experimentally observed. Since corrosion is mass-transfer controlled, our finding sheds light on the direction of future corrosion research.

The flow and heat transfer characteristics behind a backward facing step located in a vertical channel has been studied. In this study, the numerical prediction has been performed by solving the Navier-Stokes equation and energy equation simultaneously with the SIMPLE algorithm embedied in TEACH code. Local heat flux was measured by using Schlieren Interferometer. The flow visualization was performed using the cylindrical lens and the laser beam that is scattered by the supplied glycerine particles. The velocity and temperature distributions, recirculation region, reattachment length, and local heat flux are obtained under the various parameters to investigate the buoyancy effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics behind the step.

An experimental study on the flow characteristics was performed for a two-dimensional turbulent wall attaching offset jet at different oblique angles to a surface. The flow characteristics were investigated by using a split film probe with the modified Stock's calibration method. The jet mean velocity, turbulent intensity, wall static pressure coefficient profiles, and time-averaged reattachment point were measured at the Reynolds number Re (based on the nozzle width, D) ranging from 17700 to 53200, the offset ratio H/D from 2.5 to 10, and the inclined angle .alpha. from 0.deg. C to 40.deg. C. The Correlations between the maximum pressure position, minimum pressure position, and reattachment point and offset ratios, and inclined angles are presented.
The coefficients of convective heat transfer were investigated when air is jetted to surface of the heated side-wall. The temperature on the side-wall was measured when the offsets changed from 1.5 to 10.5 as 7 steps at the state of fixed Reynolds numbers that were 35000, 29000 and 23000. The experimental results are as follows: 1. The mean Nusselt number is very high on the surface of reattached flow region. 2. The offset and the recirculation flow region decreased, while the mean Nusselt number increased between the outlet of nozzle and the region of reattachment flow. 3. The local Nusselt number is not concerned with Reynolds number on the recirculation flow and on the reattached flow region when the offset decrease. But the Nusselt number increased only when Reynolds numbers on the wall jet flow region increased. 4. The mean and the maximum Nusselt number decreases linearly, and in particular its values rapidly decrease in accordance with changing of the offset from 1.5 to 3 in inverse proportion.

The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.
To better understand the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder, the distribution of aerodynamic force and the non-dimensional power spectral density (PSD) of fluctuating pressure on the side surface were studied in different VIV development stages, and their differences in the stationary state and vibration stages were analyzed. The spanwise and streamwise correlations of surface pressures were studied, and the flow field structure partitions on the side surface were defined based on the streamwise correlation analysis. The results show that the variation tendencies of mean and root mean square (RMS) pressure coefficients are similar in different VIV development stages. The RMS values during amplitude growth are larger than those at peak amplitude, and the smallest RMS values are observed in the stationary state. The spanwise correlation coefficients of aerodynamic lifts increase with increase of the peak amplitude. However, for the lock-in region, the maximum spanwise correlation coefficient for aerodynamic lifts occurs in the VIV rising stage rather than in the peak amplitude stage, probably due to the interaction of vortex shedding force (VSF) and self-excited force (SEF). The streamwise correlation results show that the demarcation point positions between the recirculation region and the main vortex region remain almost constant in different VIV development stages, and the reattachment points gradually move to the tailing edge with increasing amplitude. This study provides a reference to estimate the demarcation point and reattachment point positions through streamwise correlation and phase angle analysis from wind tunnel tests.

Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer characteristics in rotating two-pass ducts of three different aspect ratios with 90-ribbed surfaces. The results show that the flows generated by the 180-turn, rib turbulators, and duct rotation. The curvature of the 180-turn produces Dean vortices causing high heat/mass transfer in the turning region and in the upstream region of the second-pass. The rib turbulators disturb the main flow by producing reattachment and separation near the ribbed surfaces, and increase heat/mass transfer in the region between the ribs. As the rotation number increases, the heat/mass transfer discrepancy between the leading and the trailing surfaces become larger.
