The purpose of this study was to analyze how lower graders in elementary school might respond to 4 different problem types in the context of measuring length: unit-length comparison, units and unit counting, unit-length expectation, and length comparison. A total of 375 students(185 second graders and 190 third graders) were surveyed and analyzed. The results showed that students were good at 'unit-length comparison' and 'units and unit counting', whereas they were not as to 'length comparison', This paper includes detailed analysis of students' responses as to both correct answer and incorrect one in conjunction with their typical answers and reasoning behind the answers. This paper suggests that teachers be sensitive to the certain level of reasoning tied to each type of problems and attend to students' difficulties in comparing length.
In this study, we tried to find out the level of inductive reasoning ability and the aspects of visualization components shown in students in the class using exploratory software for the 'congruence and symmetry' unit in the second semester of the 5th grade of elementary school. To this end, classes using GeoGebra, one of the exploratory software, were conducted for a total of 19 students in one class of fifth graders in elementary school, and the results of the students' activities were analyzed. As a result of this study, the level of inductive reasoning ability of students remained at a similar level or developed, and it was shown that students inferred new properties of shapes using various functions of software inductively. In addition, in terms of visualization, students were able to quickly and easily draw shapes that met the conditions, and unlike the paper-and-pencil environment, using the 'measurement' and 'symmetry' functions, they transformed and manipulated complex yet precisely congruent and symmetrical external representations. Based on these analysis results, implications for the use of exploratory software in the area of figures were derived.
In this study, the case of error became the object of learning, and the investigator applied these cases to an actual class and established three study problems in order to achieve the purpose of this study. The results of analysis of students' errors in figure based on before achievement test are shown as follows: First, the most errors occurred in the figure was the ones from deficient mastery of prerequisite concepts and definitions. Specially, the errors from deficient mastery of prerequisite concepts and definitions have the majority. it is very high ratio even if it considers an influence of an evaluation question item. so, I think it is necessary to teach concept related figure above all. Second, as the results of application 'finding errors' to a class, there is a meaningful difference in the mathematical achievement and reasoning ability within significance level 5%. This means 'finding errors' is one of the teaching method that it develops the mathematical achievement and reasoning ability.

In this study, we investigated the influences of the role-playing analogy in chemistry concept learning on mapping understanding and mapping errors by analogical reasoning ability level. Seventh-graders (N=151) at a middle school were assigned to the comparison group and the experimental group. The students of the experimental group were taught with the 'running in the circle' role-playing analogy. After the students were taught about 'the relation between volume and pressure of gas', the test of mapping understanding in the next class and the retention test four weeks later were administered. The students with typical mapping errors were also interviewed to investigate their mapping processes. The results revealed that the role-playing analogy in chemistry concept learning improved mapping understanding and its retention regardless of analogical reasoning ability level. It was also found that the students in the experimental group had fewer mapping errors than those in the comparison group. However, there were similar patterns of mapping errors in both groups, and there were no significant differences in the frequencies of each type of mapping errors by analogical reasoning ability level. Educational implication of these findings are discussed.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of analogs generated by high school students to explain ionic bonding in the perspectives of the number of analogs, the understanding of mapping, and the source and type of analogs. We also compared the results by students' conceptual understanding, logical thinking ability, and analogical reasoning ability. Participants in this study were 395 11th graders in Seoul. The results of the study showed that the higher the conceptual understanding, the logical thinking ability, and the analogical reasoning ability, the more the students generated the analogs. The understanding of mapping was related to logical thinking ability and analogical reasoning ability. It is noteworthy that the sources of analogs differed only depending on their conceptual understanding of the target concept among the cognitive variables studied. Students who had higher conceptual understanding also generated analogs from more diverse sources. Some types of the generated analogs were related to the cognitive variables. For examples, the students who had higher conceptual understanding and logical thinking ability generated more verbal/pictorial analogs. The types of analogs were not related to cognitive variables in terms of artificiality, abstraction, and systemicity. Educational implications of these findings were discussed.

The study aims the introducing the items for the assessment of mathematical thinking including mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and communication and the analyzing on the responses of the 5th grade pupils. We categorized the area of mathematical reasoning into deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, and analogy; problem solving into external problem solving and internal one; and communication into speaking, reading, writing, and listening. And we proposed the examples of our items for each area and the 5th grade pupils' responses. When we assess on pupil's mathematical reasoning, we need to develop very appropriate items needing the very ability of each kind of mathematical reasoning. When pupils solve items requesting communication, the impact of the form of each communication seem to be smaller than that of the mathematical situation or sturucture of the item. We suggested that we need to continue the studies on mathematical assessment and on the constitution and utilization of cognitive areas, and we also need to in-service teacher education on the development of mathematical assessments, based on this study.

This paper outlines a framework for a diagnosis of a complex system with uncertain information. Sensor validation ploys a vital role in the ability of the overall system to correctly determine the state of a system monitored by imperfect sensors. Here, emphases are put on the heuristic technology and post-processor for reasoning. Heuristic Sensor Validation (HSV) exploits deeper knowledge about parameter interaction within the plant to cull sensor faults from the data stream. Finally the modified probability distributions and validated data are used as input to the reasoning scheme which is the runtime version of the influence diagram. The output of the influence diagram is a diagnostic mapping from the symptoms or sensor readings to a determination of likely failure modes. Once likely failure modes are identified, a detailed diagnostic knowledge base suggests corrective actions to improve performance. This framework for a diagnostic expert system with sensor validation and reasoning under uncertainty applies in $HEATXPRT^{TM}$ a data-driven on-line expert system for diagnosing heat rate degradation problems in fossil power plants [1].
This paper presents a preliminary study of introduction of the Dempster-Shafer inexact reasoning method to the expert system for the power system design problem. A brief review of Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence is presented and development of an inference engine adopting the Dempster-Sharer theory is reported. Developed inference engine has a ability of handling both the confirming and disconfirming knowledge represented in the production rule, and has a general purpose application in the design and diagnosis problems. Its applicability has been tested on the problem of the protection scheme selection, one of the typical design problem and we believe, it has shown the feasibility of adoption of the inexact reasoning methodology into the design problem.
Purpose: To evaluate undergraduate nursing students' ability in clinical competence, critical thinking, and problem solving following enrollment in a clinical reasoning course. Methods: A clinical reasoning course utilizing a human patient simulator and scenarios was offered to 22 senior students at a College of Nursing in Seoul. Students' clinical competence was measured with a checklist of 15 items by analyzing students' performance recorded on video tapes for eight scenarios. Critical thinking disposition and problem solving were measured by a self-administered questionnaire before and after the course. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The high scored items of clinical competence were: 'obtain relevant subjective/objective data', 'interpret vital signs', 'communicate with healthcare providers', and 'utilize standard precautions including handwashing.' Students' critical thinking and problem solving scores following the course were increased with statistical significance. Conclusion: A clinical reasoning course utilizing a human patient simulator creates a realistic clinical environment for nursing students and provides the opportunity to obtain clinical competence, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

In this paper we introduce the Internet-based purchase support systems using data mining and case-based reasoning (CBR). Internet Business activity that involves the end user is undergoing a significant revolution. The ability to track users browsing behavior has brought the vendor and end customer's closer than ever before. It is now possible for a vendor to personalize his product message for individual customers at massive scale. Most of former researchers, in this research arena, used data mining techniques to pursue the customer's future behavior and to improve the frequency of repurchase. The area of data mining can be defined as efficiently discovering association rules from large collections of data. However, the basic association rule-based data mining technique was not flexible. If there were no inference rules to track the customer's future behavior, association rule-based data mining systems may not present more information. To resolve this problem, we combined association rule-based data mining with CBR mechanism. CBR is used in reasoning for customer's preference searching and training through the cases. Data mining and CBR-based hybrid purchase support mechanism can reflect both association rule-based logical inference and case-based information reuse. A Web-log data gathered in the real-world Internet shopping mall is given to illustrate the quality of the proposed systems.
