  • This study is about the modeling of comfort feeling structure in indoor environments. To represent the degree of practical comfort feeling level in an environment, we measured elements of human sense and resultant elements of comfort feeling such as coziness, refreshment, and freshness with physical values(temperature, illumination, noise. etc.). The relationships of elements of human sense and elements of comfort feeling were formulated as a fuzzy model. And a hybrid-neural network with three layers were designed where obtained from fuzzy membership function values of the elements of human sense were used as inputs, and given as fuzzy membership function values of resultant elements of comfort feeling were used as outputs. Both kinds of fuzzy membership function values were obtained from physical values. The network was trained by measured data set. The proposed hybrid-neural network were tested and proposed a more realistic model of comfort feeling structure in indoor environments.

  • Non-intrusive methods based on active remote IR illumination for eye tracking is important for many applications of vision-based man-machine interaction. One problem that has plagued those methods is their sensitivity to lighting condition change. This tends to significantly limit their scope of application. In this paper, we present a new real-time eye detection and tracking methodology that works under variable and realistic lighting conditions. eased on combining the bright-pupil effect resulted from IR light and the conventional appearance-based object recognition technique, our method can robustly track eyes when the pupils are not very bright due to significant external illumination interferences. The appearance model is incorporated in both eyes detection and tracking via the use of support vector machine and the mean shift tracking. Additional improvement is achieved from modifying the image acquisition apparatus including the illuminator and the camera.

  • Photon mapping is a traditional global illumination method using many photons emitted from the light source for photo-realistic rendering. However, this method needs a lot of resources to perform tracing of millions of photons. Progressive photon mapping solves this problem. Typical progressive photon mapping performs ray tracing at first to find the hit points on diffuse surface of objects. Next, light source repeatedly emits a small number of photons in photon tracing pass, and power of photons in each sphere that has a fixed radius with the hit points in the center is accumulated. This method requires less resources than previous photon mapping, but it spends much time for gathering enough photons since each of photons progresses through a random direction and rendering high quality image. To improve the method, we propose photon probing that calculates variance of photons in the sphere and controls radius of sphere. In addition, we apply cone filter in radiance estimation step for reducing aliasing at the edges in result image.

  • Although radiosity can represent diffuse reflections of the object surfaces by modeling energy exchange in 3D space, there are some restrictions for real-time applications because of its computation loads. Therefore, GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) based radiosity algorithms have been presented actively to improve its rendering performance. We implement the progressive refinement radiosity on GPU by G. Coombe in 3D scene that is constructed with HDR(High Dynamic Range) radiance map. This radiosity method can generate a photo-realistic rendering image in 3D space, where the synthetic objects were illuminated by the environmental light sources. In the simulation results, the rendering performance is analyzed according to the resolution of the texel in the environmental map and mipmaping. In addition, we compare the rendering results by our method with those by the incremental radiosity.

  • By estimating environment light distribution, we can generate realistic shadow images in AR(augmented reality). When we estimate light distribution without sensing equipment, environment light model, geometry of virtual object, and surface reflection property are needed. Previous study using 3D marker builds surrounding light environment with a geodesic dome model and analyzes shadow images. Because this method employs candidate shadow maps in initial scene setup, however, it is difficult to estimate precise light information. This paper presents a novel light estimation method based on hierarchical light distribution model subdivision. By using an overlapping area ratio of the segmented shadow and candidate shadow map, we can make hierarchical subdivision of light geodesic dome.

  • Since 3D face can be rotated freely in 3D space and illumination effects can be modeled properly, 3D face modeling Is more precise and realistic in face pose, illumination, and expression than 2D face modeling. Thus, 3D modeling is necessitated much in face recognition, game, avatar, and etc. In this paper, we propose a 3D face modeling method based on 3D morphable shape modeling. The proposed 3D modeling method first constructs a 3D morphable shape model out of 3D face scan data obtained using a 3D scanner Next, the proposed method extracts and matches feature points of the face from 2D image sequence containing a face to be modeled, and then estimates 3D vertex coordinates of the feature points using a factorization based SfM technique. Then, the proposed method obtains a 3D shape model of the face to be modeled by fitting the 3D vertices to the constructed 3D morphable shape model. Also, the proposed method makes a cylindrical texture map using 2D face image sequence. Finally, the proposed method builds a 3D face model by rendering the 3D face shape model with the cylindrical texture map. Through building processes of 3D face model by the proposed method, it is shown that the proposed method is relatively easy, fast and precise than the previous 3D face model methods.

  • TOLED(Transparent, Organic Light Emitting Diodes) based edutainment system has been studied to solve the actual feeling training and educational experience problem of e-learning. However, edutainment system using TOLED has a problem for the non-detection of multi marker array and rotate marker array, and it has problem for the dissonance phenomena caused by Illumination Environment between real world and virtual object. It also has a do not provide services through a variety of devices problem. Therefore, in this paper, we designed a system that provides a realistic actual feeling edutainment contents by recognizes the marker array rotation and a plurality of marker arrangement via an improved marker detection technique. And to unify the real space and virtual space of the lighting environment through a nested block layer.

  • The light source is an important visual component that empirically affects the color and illumination of graphic objects, and it is necessary to precisely store and appropriately employ the information of all light sources in the real world in order to obtain photo-realistic composition results. The information of real light sources can be accurately stored in HDR environment maps; however, it is impossible to create new environment maps corresponding to dynamic virtual light sources from a single HDR environment map captured under a fixed lighting situation. In this paper, we present a technique to dynamically generate well-matched information for arbitrarily selected virtual light sources using HDR environment maps created under predefined lighting position and orientation. Using the information obtained from light intensity and distribution analysis, our technique automatically generates HDR environment maps for virtual light sources via image interpolation. By applying the interpolated environment maps to an image-based lighting technique, we show that virtual light can create photo-realistically rendered images for graphic models.

  • Detection of moving objects is a fundamental task in most of the computer vision applications, such as video surveillance, activity recognition and human motion analysis. This is a difficult task due to many challenges in realistic scenarios which include irregular motion in background, illumination changes, objects cast shadows, changes in scene geometry and noise, etc. In this paper, we propose an foreground extraction algorithm based on codebook, a database of information about background pixel obtained from input image sequence. Initially, we suppose a first frame as a background image and calculate difference between next input image and it to detect moving objects. The resulting difference image may contain noises as well as pure moving objects. Second, we investigate a codebook with color and brightness of a foreground pixel in the difference image. If it is matched, it is decided as a fault detected pixel and deleted from foreground. Finally, a background image is updated to process next input frame iteratively. Some pixels are estimated by input image if they are detected as background pixels. The others are duplicated from the previous background image. We apply out algorithm to PETS2009 data and compare the results with those of GMM and standard codebook algorithms.

  • With the current trend of digital convergence in mobile phone, imaging devices such as cameras, displays and beam-projectors have been made smaller and become into mobile phones. Especially, built-in beam-projectors (we call it mobile beam-projector hereafter) have been developed to overcome small screen size of mobile display and to provide the realistic image while watching movies or broadcasting. However, mobile beam-projector can project an original image on various colored-screen, different from general data projector with white screen, thereby degrading the image quality of projected images. Therefore, this paper proposed a method of correcting projected images on colored-screens by adapting color constancy theory that has been mainly used for illumination estimation.
