  • This paper discusses real-time peak shaving algorithms for a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). Although several transmission and distribution functions could be implemented for diverse purposes in BESS applications, this paper focuses on a real-time peak shaving algorithm for an energy time shift, considering wind power generation. In a high wind penetration environment, the effective load levels obtained by subtracting the wind generation from the load time series at each long-term cycle time unit are needed for efficient peak shaving. However, errors can exist in the forecast load and wind generation levels, and the real-time peak shaving operation might require a method for wind generation that includes comparatively large forecasting errors. To effectively deal with the errors of wind generation forecasting, this paper proposes a real-time peak shaving algorithm for threshold value-based peak shaving that considers fuzzy wind power generation.

  • Owing to the variability of large-scaled wind power system, the development of wind farm management technologies and related compensation methods have been receiving attention. To provide an accurate and reliable output power, certain wind farm adopts a specified management system including a wind prediction model and grid expectation solutions for considering grid condition. Those technologies are focused on improving the reliability and stability issues of wind farms, which can affect not only nearby system devices but also a voltage condition of utility grid. Therefore, to adapt the develop management system, an expectation process about voltage condition of Point of Common Coupling should be integrated in operating system for responding system requirements in real-time basis. This paper introduce a grid imposing method for a real-time based wind farm management system. The expected power can be transferred to the power flow section and the required quantity about reactive power can be calculated through the proposed system. For the verification process, the gauss-seidel method is introduced in the Matlab/Simulink for analysing power flow condition. The entire simulation process was designed to interwork with PSCAD for verifying real power system condition.

  • This paper presents a study of a DFIG wind power generation system for real-time simulations. For real-time simulations, the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and its user friendly interface simulation software RSCAD are used. A 2.2MW grid-connected variable speed DFIG wind power generation system is modeled and analyzed in this study. The stator-flux oriented vector control scheme is applied to the stator/rotor side converter control, and the back-to-back PWM converters are implemented for the decoupled control. The real-wind speed signal extracted by an anemometer is used for a realistic, reliable and accurate simulation analysis. Block diagrams, a mathematical presentation of the DFIG and a control scheme of the stator/rotor-side are introduced. Real-time simulation cases are carried out and analyzed for the validity of this work.

  • Cost effective simulation schemes for Wind Power Generation Systems (WPGS) considering wind turbine types, generators and load capacities have been strongly investigated by researchers. As an alternative, a true weather condition based simulation method using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is experimented in this paper for the online real-time simulation of the WPGS. A stand-alone WPGS is, especially, simulated using the Simulation method for WPGS using Real Weather conditions (SWRW) in this work. The characteristic equation of a wind turbine is implemented in the RTDS and a RTDS model component that can be used to represent any type of wind turbine in the simulations is also established. The actual data related to weather conditions are interfaced directly to the RTDS for the purpose of online real-time simulation of the stand-alone WPGS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme. The results also signify that the cost effective verification of efficiency and stability for the WPGS is possible by the proposed real-time simulation method.

  • The renewable resource are getting more attentions with increased concerns on the depletion of fossil fuels and several environmental issues like emission problem. Wind power is a representative option among several renewable sources and the generation capacity using wind power is being increased. However, the wind generation is so volatile on its output characteristic, so it is required to assess the grid impact of wind power generation by measuring the fluctuation effect more precisely. This paper proposes the method for measuring the generation output according to IEC 61400-21(Measurement and assessment of power quality characteristics of grid connected wind turbines) to assess the power quality of wind turbine generation. In addition, it shows an application case to a small-scale wind power generator. In the case study, it suggests a structure design of the proposed measurement instrument both on hardware and software aspects, which is composed of a remote monitoring & data analysis program and an FPGA based real-time signal processing device.

  • A hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) method for a wind farm controller using a real time digital simulator (RTDS) is presented, and performance of the wind farm controller is analyzed. A 100 MW wind farm which includes 5 MW wind power generation systems (WPGS) is modeled and analyzed in RSCAD/RTDS. The wind farm controller is implemented by using a computer, which is connected to the RTDS through transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP). The HILS results show the active power and power factor of the wind farm, which are controlled by the wind farm controller. The proposed HILS method in this paper can be effectively utilized to validate and test a wind farm controller under the environment in practice without a real wind farm.

  • This paper describes a real-time hardware simulator for a grid-tied Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind power system, which consists of an anemometer, a data logger, a motor-generator set with vector drive, and a back-to-back power converter with a digital signal processor (DSP) controller. The anemometer measures real wind speed, and the data is sent to the data logger to calculate the turbine torque. The calculated torque is sent to the vector drive for the induction motor after it is scaled down to the rated simulator power. The motor generates the mechanical power for the PMSG, and the generated electrical power is connected to the grid through a back-to-back converter. The generator-side converter in a back-to-back converter operates in current control mode to track the maximum power point at the given wind speed. The grid-side converter operates to control the direct current link voltage and to correct the power factor. The developed simulator can be used to analyze various mechanical and electrical characteristics of a grid-tied PMSG wind power system. It can also be utilized to educate students or engineers on the operation of grid-tied PMSG wind power system.
